This is posted in both Noir and SoM.

In sleuth world we have a lot of websites giving advice, acting as web pages for players or agencies. This creates a very hard to navigate community, the wiki would take all that information and put into one website.
For those of you who don't know a wiki is a database that can be edited by anyone, but some measures are in place to stop vandals.
The wiki would allow for the most up to date Sleuth Encyclopedia and will give agencies and users to show what they've got beyond the little spaces we are allowed to edit on our profiles.

I would just like to now if there is an interest for this, before I go ahead and maybe set it up.

If I recall correctly, there was an article about Sleuth on wiki a while back (like two years ago when I played every day and had no RL).

When I clicked on the link, it had been removed. I checked the edits, and it was removed because it was considered to be an advertisement.

Don't know if anything happened after that, never bothered to check, but be aware that an article might be viewed as such.

Yes Odie, I was one of the people who edited that orginal wikipedia article. We could not modify it enough to please the moderators there.

Anything new would have to be hosted somewhere else.

^ was thinking same thing as odie about wiki being pulled. But yes doesn't have to be on wikipedia.

^ I think in terms of what's on agency websites my response [in terms of game information] is 'meh'. There is 'some' original content out there, but it's in the vast minority, and a LOT of it has just been passed through the mill from one agency / player to the next, and gathered from a variety of players willing to share what they've learned regardless of where that info. might end up, as well as graphics and words pulled from the actual sleuth site, so on and so forth.

I have no idea about copyright and permission to link stuff except to say that I think Hypothetical Software is fairly generous. :)

Good luck yoyo. It's a good idea as a 'general' resource that might get people involved contributing to the game in a 'different' way.

This decision is getting harder and harder. Some people are telling me to go for it, others are skeptical. I need to think this out. I can see that some people will be unhappy about what may happen to their current websites, and that it may ruin the community and take away individuality. But there are also many benefits to having a wiki. Not sure yet, continue debating :)

Well, I do see the point of the fact that there isn't much on various sites as original. There are differences though. The originality comes from our creativity.

To be frank here, while we tend to rewrite things and whatnot on the sites, even as far as copy and paste, many of us learn the basics of making a website. I'll be darned if any one of us, aside from the select few who know the technical things, would be able to actually mimic the whole game. I see the different websites, some on google pages, some on freewebs, and even as far as aol and wiki (which is what yoyo's wanting to do here) as a good stepping stone to learning the basics of graphical creativity. Some of us are better writers than artists (graphical or not)... and you see some of that going through various sites.

I do agree with what has been said, just find some things sort of ironic. Like how would I be able to have a problem with the information on DPI's site being redistributed once more, IF I had gotten them off another site? Granted, I'm not the only one who updates and edits DPI's site, but I do a lot of work there. I have been working on several more artistic projects than writing at the moment. It's not easy to come up with something unique, but yet at the same time, you want to share what you know, which is the same as what everyone else knows. However, it is easy to copy and paste and call it your own.

I really don't see how it can ruin the community or take anything away from our individual websites. I know my agents and us use ours and we have the trophy room, but how many people really look at the others trophy rooms. My whole purpose of our trophy room is to give accolades to all agents that helped on a TH rather than just the one that got his/her name in City News.

Whatever decision you come to, there will be some that agree and some that disagre, no way to make everyone happy. As I stated earlier, anything we have on our websites is pretty much open game to be copied whether we give consent or not. SS made a good point in hypothetical software has been generous, they are the only ones that could have a legitimate complaint. And there will always be some they claim the work on their site as their own. I know for a fact of some things that I've found for others websites that I have not received credit for, but if I wanted to have said credit it would be on my site. Of course if I put it on my site now I'd be accused of stealing the idea!

Again, I'm not here to have a war over it, I like a good debate as this has been so far, and I hope it continues to be a good debate. I haven't wandered over to SOM to get thoughts over there however. I guess I'll have to do that.

For what it's worth, I think a Sleuth Wiki is a great idea.

If you don't do it someone else might and it might not be so accurate....

I have been waiting to weigh in on this one... and I guess now I will...

I'm not opposed to the idea in many facets. Of course I love the idea of being able to help others.

But, of course, I'm not in favor of the idea in many ways. It could take away from much of the need and use of SleuthTips, and I've worked extremely hard on the site. A wiki might push us to have to close, or at least have to move to a free hosting facility, which I would hate to do.

I obviously see the reasoning behind it, but I guess I don't see the reasoning as coming up with a large enough need for it to be created.

For what it's worth, I don't think I can endorse the idea. Count me among the nay's.
