Detective Biography

I'd had better days; better weeks. Heck, if I believed in reincarnation...

I pulled my collar up against the rain. If I was going to drown my sorrows I'd rather do it from the inside.

A gust of wind caught me as I paused to get my bearings and I nearly missed the shadowed entrance to the bar. I thumbed my nose at Mother Nature as I stumbled through the door.

"The usual Frank", I grunted.

Silence.

I looked up at Frank the bartender. He was living proof that age and wisdom did not go hand in hand.

"What?", I sighed.

"We aint got none SS", Frank's voice quivered. "Got carrot juice though", he offered hopefully.

Out of Root Beer again! I trudged over to my usual stool, "I'm not a bloody rabbit Frank!".

Frank started to yabber an apology but I cut him off, "Just get me a glass of milk."

He looked stunned. "In a dirty glass", I added. I had a reputation after all.

Moments later a chipped and cloudy glass of milk slid down the bar. I sniffed. Still good.

Half way through my milk, and my mental litany of complaints, I heard a small voice call out, "God knows, you're a handsome fellow."

I glanced down the bar to Frank. He gave me a toothless smile. "What was that?", I asked.

He looked puzzled, "I didn't say nuthin' SS."

I shrugged and went back to my drink. As disturbing as it was, if the old chap wanted to throw a few kind words my way, so be it.

Moments later, "Charm and intelligence, that's you to the tee", the same small voice said.

I turned sharply to Frank once more, but the old man was nowhere to be seen. On cue he appeared through the kitchen door, "Fix you up sumthin' SS?" he asked hopefully. I ignored the carrot in his hand.

"Frank", I said, trying to keep my voice even, "I keep hearing this voice..."

The old man came closer, "What kind of voice SS? My old gaffer, now he heard voices. Henry VIII used to tell him how to grow tomatoes you know! And he swore Caruso sang to him in the bath one night!"

"Enough!", I snapped.

I drew a deep calming breath, "No Frank. I heard a voice. It said nice things to me. Told me I was handsome; intelligent; charming."

Frank stood smiling at me for what seemed an eternity, before what could almost have been mistaken for a glimmer of intelligence seemed to twinkle in his rheumy eyes.

He almost danced a jig where he stood as he pointed to the bar. "It's the nuts", the old man cackled, clapping his hands.

I looked down the bar and spied a chipped bowl, full of nuts. "So what" I said.

Frank was fully into his jig now, "Don't you see SS?"

My patience deserted me, "No I don't see, you old fool!"

Frank paused and managed to regain his composure, his feet still shuffling - not willing to give up their jig - "It's the nuts, SS!"

"Yes Frank", I coaxed.

The old man offered me another toothless smile and pointed at the bowl of nuts again, "They're complimentary..."
