Stepping out the cabin door, Makensie almost bumped into…

“CLIFT?” she exclaimed in surprise. “I thought you left already!” she said in a cut voice looking away in a moment of weakness in order to avoid his eyes.

“I thought I did too, but…” Clift seemed to be a bit confused of what he was about to say.

Makensie gathered her breath fast in the short pause that followed. She tightened up her scarf with a firm move and carried on in a cold voice this time.

“But what, Clift? W-hat? You lost your way towards your cabin? Or did you have another bright idea about how to handle best my life?”

“Mak…there’s something I need…”

“What was that?” interrupted Mak pointing her eyes somewhere behind Clift’s back. A sound of running steps broke down the silence of the night. He turned around just in time to see a shadow disappear fast across the deck.

“That man…it looked like he was…hiding there.”

Clift took a long look across the narrow lane. “Don’t know…I haven’t noticed him. And why would someone want to hide there?”

“Maybe to eavesdrop on your cheap novel life conceptions and illusions. Now, am I going to hear what you came here to say or are you just going to babble like an old lady?”

Clift’s face suddenly got a grave expression. His brain wheels were again in motion, having been obviously triggered by the ghost he saw. That place where the running man was supposed to have hidden was actually the perfect spot to listen to a conversation in Mak’s room. And that shadow…looked intriguingly similar to the man he met today at the bar. He started mumbling to himself…“Eavesdropping? On US? Why in the world would someone want to do that? There’s something really fishy about this character I’ve met. Maybe I should somehow look into him first, rather than in Violet.”

“Well?” said Makensie cutting the chain of his thoughts.

“Well, nothing.”…replied Clift in a firm voice this time. “I’ve changed my mind. I’ll have to sleep on it before I follow up with this. I have to go now. Please excuse me.”

“Say, Clift, how did you…” It was pointless. Having said his “good night” Clift rushed across the lane and quickly disappeared from Mak’s line of view.

“Now where’s the fire? What in the world has gotten into him so sudden?” she said to herself. She took a deep breath. “Well, I guess that’s it about my little secret. I never thought it was so obvious, but hey, he’s a detective after all. I wonder…am I really starting to show so clearly?” She put a hand over her belly pressing the sweater onto it.

She raised her eyes up to the moon. “I guess it’s time to take that walk I was actually aiming for.”

Clift had gone back to his bedroom.

Although Violet and he were technically married, Miss Parr was adamant that they should not share a room, even for appearance sake since no one really knew them on the ship.

Now Clift started thinking that Violet's assumption wasn't all that accurate.

He was intrigued and to a degree even frightened by the mysterious Mr. Bane. Joey Bane didn't scare Clift physically, it was rather what he knew or what he wanted to discover that scared him.

The guy was up to something, Clift could easily tell.

He knew it was to do directly with Violet.

As friendly and loving as they were to one another, Clift had never really and truly gotten to know Violet. It was perhaps Makensie Brewer who knew her the best out of the them three, but still...

If anyone between Clift, Ace, Violet and Mak had secrets it would be Violet.. and if any one of them was being followed for any purpose it would also be Violet.

Clift started getting more and more restless until all his sleepyness had gone away.

He got up and sat on his bed for a while pondering the matter..

Was he to approach Violet Parr directly with this?
Was he to confront Joey Bane directly and get whatever he can out of him?

Joey seemed to be a tough guy, but Clift was younger and fitter... Clift suddenly remembered Violet's judo throw the last time he tried to over power her and decided against any physical confrontation with Joey Bane.

He had to do something though... Of course! He would investigate the matter himself. After all he was a detective, and a good one at that! Trained by Mr. Jesse Hunter of Obelisk Inc. no less...

Clift got up and left his cabin.

Clift walked into the telegram office.

He thought once again before doing this, but he felt he had to. There was only one person he knew who would know Violet well.

He sent a telegram to the old friend, who happened to be a veteran detective:

As Makensie walked along, she breathed out, looking up into the sky.

A beautiful night, she thinks to herself.

Then she hears, "A beautiful night isn't it?"

Turning, she saw Clift standing there.

"You read my mind", Makensie said, with a smile.

He walks up to stand beside her, as she said, "Clift, I want to apologize for my rudeness back there. Im never that snappy, and well, I don't know what has come over me lately, but, I'm sorry"

He smiles, and says, "No need to be sorry, I understand."

Then,he says, "So, when were you going to tell me of your pregnancy?"

"You already knew, it seems like", Makensie said, again, with slight aggravation in her voice.

He nods, and said, "I had an idea, yes, but, you could've told me still. How far along are you?"

She takes a deep breath in , and blows, then says, "A month. I'm sorry it just slipped my mind back there to not tell you first, but, this thing you told Ace , about marrying me, had me all baffled"

He grins, and says, "I notice. Baffled becomes you"

She chuckles, and said, "Oh stop, please"

"I dont know what to do, Clift", she said.

Clift steps closer, and said, "I'm sorry we are all in this position, but, now, we just deal with what happened, and we handle it. You and our baby will be taken care of, one way or the other"

She smiles, and says, "I know, and I have no worries there"

Clift looks off into the water, as Makensie looks at him, and says, "Something is bothering you. I can see it. What are you thinking?"

He looks at her, blows out air, then says, "Oh its not you. Its this man....this note...Violet.....I dont know. I'm trying to gather my thoughts , but, Im not going to drag you into this....not right now"

She continues to look at him, and says, "You know, that Im always here for you to talk four have all grown quite close these last few weeks, and we are all going to need each other for one thing or another. I want to help

if I can"

"I know, and I'm sure I will need it at some point, but, right now, I just have to gather my thoughts before I can put it in words to what is going on", Clift said, softly smiling.

Mak closed the sweater around her, and said, "Ok....well, I best get back to my room. It's late, and Im very exhausted"

Clift said, "Yes, get some rest, Mak. You will need it more now, than ever with an extra one to worry about"

Smiling , she gently touched his arm, and said, "See you tomorrow, then. Goodnight"

Goodnight", he said.

He watched her walk off, until he couldnt see her anymore, to make sure she got to where she was going ok, and he turned back to the water.

I sure hope I hear from Yoyo soon, he thinks.

Makensie gets to her room, and the whole way there, she felt like they were being watched, and that she was being followed, but that was an absurd thought. Who would know they are here?, she thinks.

She steps in her room, shut the door, locking it behind her, then thinks of Ace, and if he is still awake.

Thinking it was best to just get some sleep, she changed into her sleeping clothes, and snuggled down in bed.

Jan-16-2009 20:22

"Oh, what drama!" Ace says aloud as he falls into his bed, "Not even my sister would take this much off the stage!"

Clothes on, Ace slowly falls asleep, not exactly eager to wake up the next morning.

But, next morning came. Ace woke up after a rather irritating sleep, thanks to his clothes and the lights. He hopped in the shower and changed clothes before he left.

Ace walked out on deck. A beautiful morning! The sun was just peaking over the horizon, giving a wonderful glow to the sea beneath it. This early, the ship was not yet crowded with other passengers, allowing Ace to enjoy the beautiful sky.

Ace sat there under the sun as he pondered life. All his thoughts darted across his mind, like the taste of sushi, the beauty of Mak, the marvel of the movies, and the many uses of duct tape.

Wait... was "the beauty of Mak" stuffed in there? Oh, yes, of course. The beautiful sky reminded him much of the beautiful (flat-stomached) Makensie.

Soon, the deck would be filled with tourists, but Ace knew that he could still think of mushy stuff for at least a few more minutes.

Makensie was up and surprisingly, felt rested.

She had on a pair of white capri pants, with a loose fit, turquoise top, with white sandals.

Finishing up her make-up, she added some finishing touches, poofed her hair a bit, which were back in combs, and headed out of her cabin.

Wonder if anyone is up yet, she thinks.

Violet was walking out, just as Makensie was passing.

"Well, good morning to you, Mak! Don't you look so bright and refreshed, this fine day", Violet said.

Makensie smiled, and said, "Good Morning, Vi! Thank you, as do you"

They walked out onto the deck, and saw Ace leaning against the rale, looking out to the water, with a pleasant look on his face.

Violet chuckles, and said, "He is having happy thoughts. Have you seen Clift?"

"Actually, no, I haven't yet", Makensie said.

Violet said, "Oh...well, he is probably off socializing or something. I'm going to the breakfast bar. Care to join me? We are eating for two now, you know"

Chuckling, Makensie said, "I'm reminded more and more each day" She looks down at her stomache, which had just a slight bump, barely noticable yet, but, still, could tell, as she adds, "I feel more fat each day"

Violet laughs and said, "Don't be silly. Pregnant women are beautiful"

"Ok, Violet, whatever you say", Makensie said, laughing.

Violet headed to the breakfast bar, as Makensie walked to Ace.

"Penny for your thoughts," Makensie said behind him.

He jumped slightly, and turned, looking at Makensie up and down, then said, "Well, good morning there bright eyes. Don't you look pretty today"

"Well, thank you Ace. You look pretty nice, and refreshed yourself", she said, in return.

"I do feel refreshed now, surprisingly. Its beautiful out. What are we going to do today?" , he asked.

She thinks a bit, and said, "I dont know , but, I know what I'm doing right NOW, and that is eating" He grins, and said, "Sounds like a plan. Say, where is the ol Cliftster at?"

Looking around, she said, "I'm not sure"

Then they spotted him walking out of the cabin where you can send or receive messages.

Odd, she thinks. Wonder who he is waiting to hear from, or wanting to contact?, she thinks.

He walks to Violet, smiles, then sits down beside her.

Makensie and Ace walk up, and sit down as well.

They begin laughing and talking of their plans for the day and little did they know, that someone in the room, was watching them.

Clift looked arounda bit, getting a funny feeling, as he noticed the mysterious man from the other day, standing by the rail watching them.

This is rediculous, Clift thought. He has to talk to this man, or better yet, Violet, as soon as he got the chance.

Makensie was lost in conversation with Violet and Ace, but, could feel tension from Clift, and had the funniest feeling that someone was watching them or atleast one of them at the their table.

Maybe it is just long years on the job, she says, shrugging it off.
