Detective Biography

"One grand to hit the floor in the 4th. Nobody wants to see your ugly face in the ring no more!"

I was your usual heavyweight boxer filling the New York gyms: big, strong, yet only as good as I was able to serve the interests of the local betting parlors. Bouncing at the Tricky Mister didn't quite make me a rich man, so random prize fights were a good way to cover some expenses one way or another. It wouldn't be the first time to take a fall for cash. The problem was...I had already taken one too many, so players wouldn't throw a dime on me anymore.

"Ain't got all day here, Joey!"

A thousand greens could still pay a lot of rent.

Next morning I was sitting in my usual chair at the bar with a bag of ice covering my black eye and a shot of whiskey in my hand. That chump the night before hadn't gone easy on me. At least my landlord was happy.

...

"Joey 'The Bulldog' Bane!...How's that left hook, champ?"

Couldn't believe my eyes. My old friend J.C. Tombstone was standing right in front of me. Back in the prohibition days J.C. was running a smooth bootlegging operation. Unfortunately it got busted, so his only option was to flee town. I hadn't seen him in 5 years.
He grabbed a seat and we opened a bottle of Daniel's for old times' sake.

Seems he had ended up in London where he managed to open some sort of a private investigations agency. Now, with the prohibition over, he wanted to move his action back home.

"So, Joey...how 'bout teaming up together? I do remember you were good at finding people."

True. In our early years we used to do some occasional "recoveries" for the local "trust funds". I did use to have a good nose for those running away rats.

J.C. said it was all legit, but somehow...the word "legit" and his name didn't seem to fit well together.

On the other hand my financial situation didn't show any sign of near future improvement and my so called "boxing carrier" was obviously over, so...I finally agreed. In a couple of weeks we set up an office and got to work.

...

"Inspector Japp, Scotland Yard!...Please accompany me to the station, Mr. Bane!"

The large man blocking my office door proved to be indeed an English police investigator. Apparently J.C.'s surveillance job in London during the last few weeks was actually the surveillance of a bank safe which he managed to clean out just the night before. I finally understood that the New York office was in fact a decoy to lure the Scotland Yard on the wrong tracks.

After several hours of interrogation I was finally released. They had nothing on me.

I decided to take a long walk home in order to clear my head. J.C. was gone and reason said he will stay gone for a long time. There was no point in contacting me anytime soon as obviously I was to be kept under constant police surveillance. So...with him out of the picture, I practically had the whole business to myself.
