A young man confronts Jack Altavon Talison. The man says he is Roger Acton, and he has a case for Jack. Something involving murder, pie, dead Zachary Acton, and more murder. And a suspect called Jerome Lormos.

"And what do you pay for this?" Jack asks.

"$600 for solving the case." Roger replies.

"Er...uh...I guess I'll take it."

"Did I mention I told an assortment of other detectives about it? And that I will gve the reward to the one detective who solves the case, using all means possible?"

"Uh, no, you didn't mention it until now."

A knife is suddenly thrown at Jack. It narrowly misses him.

I tediously searched the kitchen. I wanted the place to myself. Mack and Kevin seemed trustworthy enough, but I only trusted my own eyes with this place.

I looked at the thirty or so pie tins, all reddened. It looked like it used to be cherry pie, but I wasn't sure. I was about to taste it when I looked more closely at the pie tins. Something wasn't right; the stains were not right for a cherry pie. I put the tin close to my nose and sniffed. I instantly recognized the smell; it's hard to miss when you're a detective.

The smell of blood.

I dropped the tin with a clatter and looked at the other pie tins. Each had the distinctive scent of blood. We weren't dealing with... a cannibal, were we?

"No, no, we couldn't be," I assured myself, but it wasn't working. My wits were at end.

I opened the kitchen cupboard and found more stacks of bloodied pie tins. I saw a note. I picked it up and read it.
There were numerous names on it, including Zachery's, which was crossed out. There were other names, but then I saw something truly frightening.

Mack, Kevin, my name, and several other famous detectives were on the list.

I screamed without realizing it.

I ran down the stairs while Kevin took the banister. He slid down a lot faster than I could run but his ending was not very graceful. He fell face first at the bottom of the stairs. I quickly ran to him and helped him to his feet.

"Are you okay?" I asked.

"Yeah I'm fine." He replied as his face reddened.I gave him the once-over. He seemed okay except for his hurt pride.

We quickly ran into the kitchen to find Talianna holding a piece of paper, her face very pale.

"What's the matter?" asked Kevin.

"Do I look magically delicous?" she asked.

Kevin and I glanced at each other. He gave me the "she's cucoo" signal.

"I don't think of you that way," he responed,"but that would make a great commercial for an Irish cereal."

Talianna shook her head then passed him the paper.

"I found it on the counter, but that wouldn't frighten me normally until I noticed these." She handed me a tin with what seemed to be rasberry filling.
"I think it's blood. We are dealing with a cannibal."

I smelled the red residue. It smelled like a rusty pipe. Definately blood, but human? Suddenly, I remembered a test a scientist had made that would help determine whether this blood was animal or human, and since we were in the kitchen, we had the perfect ingredients to perform the test.

I turned to Talianna and Kevin.

"Have you ever heard of a man called Paul Uhlenhuth?"

"Paul Uhlenhuth?" I asked, still shaking. The name didn't seem to ring a bell, but then again I wasn't able to think clearly.
"Is he some sort of scientist?" Kevin asked. I furrowed my brows with concentrated thinking. Uhlenhuth... I should have been able to remember such a strange name...

My face suddenly lit up.

"Uhlenhuth! He was able to detect blood from other substances, right?" I asked. Mack nodded.

"More than that; he knew how to tell the difference between human and animal blood. That might be useful in this case. We need to know for sure what we're dealing with," Mack explained.

"Okay, and how exactly do we do that?" Kevin asked suspiciously. Tali grinned.
"Oh, it's not that difficult," Tali said. She opened one of the cupboards. "Just a few ingredients is all we need..."

Kevin looked like a lost puppy.

"Paul Uhlenhuth," I explained to him, "was a German scientist who discovered that if he injected protein from a chicken egg into a rabbit, and then mixed the serum from the rabbit with the egg white, the egg proteins seperated from the liquid to from something called precipitin."

"What does that mean?" Kevin asked as Talianna handed me an egg, a bowl, and a spoon.

"It means it forms an antibody." explained Talianna as she went to get a bloody pan.

"Right," I said as I cracked the egg and made sure only the white came out.

"But what does rabbits have to do with anything?" Kevin asked.

"Sustitute the rabbit for a bloody pan."

Talianna handed me the pan and I took a little bit of egg white and swirled it around in the pan with the spoon.

"How does this prove anything?" asked Kevin.

"For some reason, the egg white forms an antibody for animal blood..." explained Talianna.

"But not human blood." Kevin finished, finally catching on.

"Right," I replied. I scrapped off what I had in the pan and placed back in the egg white.
"I don't know how long this will take." I looked up and saw Talianna looked very upset.

"I was just thinking about that pie I ate in the kitchen next door. What if..."

"I seriously doubt that a cannabal would use one of his own pies to stick in your face. Besides, it was blueberry remember."

"What are you talking about," asked Kevin. Quickly, I explained how Tailanna and I met next door and how Talianna face had been covered in pie when I found her. He laughed, but stopped quickly after seeing how Talianna's face didn't change and seemed unconvenced.

I made an effort to change the subject.

"Hey...um... I never did look in that hat box. I wonder what's inside."

"You watch the egg, um, thingy, I'll go check." I said. After all, I did get smacked with it!

I went to check the box, which was upside-down in the living room. I took the top off, and there was a hat, not surprisingly.

But it was a black and white pillbox hat, sold only by that gang the Green Hand.

Now, why would a man have a woman's hat from the Green Hand? I took it in to the kitchen.

"Has it worked yet?" I asked, "And how long should we wait before we determine it to be human?

"No, it hasn't worked, I forgot how long we should wait, and what's that?" Mack replied.

"This is a woman's pillbox hat from the Green Hand. Was he a foreigner? I asked. Maybe he was from London or Delhi, where Green Hand has gangs.

"No, he was born and raised in the Big Apple!" Talianna chimed in. She had been staring at the eggy blood for the whole time!

"Oh wait! There's a tag in here." I said, pulling out the tag. "Hats of the Hand, London, England."

Mack took the hat, and inside was a marking: Property of Gabriella Acton.

"What a find!" Talianna exclaimed. "Let's take the pan, and go check her out in the hall of records!"

It turns out That Ms. Acton is an active member of Green Hand in her native London, and was visiting her cousin Zach in New York, right around the time of the murder! Big uh-oh for Gabby!

As we gathered up the experiment, a thought occurred to me.

"Kevin, before Talianna screamed you were going to show me something. What was it?"

Talianna, who was collecting a pan from the table, looked up. Her eyes full of intrest were focused on Kevin.

I looked down at the experiment, my face redding. I was beginning to get worried about this result. Usually it took a couple of seconds for an antibody to appear. So far I saw nothing. Did I do the experiment right?

Or could it be something much worse?

"Um, the note, the note. Um, let's see..." I said, searching my pockets. "Oh, here it is!" I said, pulling out a chewing gum wrapper. We all chuckled, but Mack looked a little worried.

After I finally found the note, I showed it to the gals. It had three names on it: Christina Reinhardt, James Anderson, and Jerome Lormos.

Mack and Talianna both jumped. "I put Christina behind bars!" Mack exclaimed.

Talianna looked frightened, "I put Anderson in jail, for C-can..." Talianna stuttered. She couldn't finish her sentence. She just stared of deeply into space. I pulled a chair over for her and she sat down. Then Talianna turned and said the scariest thing.

"Cannibalism!" We all jumped at the word. We were still there in the Hall of Records, so we decided to look them up as well.

I guess that shows Mack's experiment was probably right.

Talianna explained some more. "I highly suspected cannibalism in the case. Then, I found human blood everywhere in his house! Then-"

Mack interrupted, "Oh no! It says here that James Anderson got parole three weeks ago!

"How does a murderer-kidnapper get off on parole?" Asked Talianna.

"That's our legal system, for ya!" I chimed in.

We looked up Zach Acton as well, since Talianna found that note listing him with several detectives. It turns out he is, or rather was, a detective himself. Looks like we got a gumshoe killer on our hands!

My hands started shaking.
"I never thought I'd have to relieve the Anderson Case," I whispered. "A bloody mess, that one was... literally and figuratively." Mack had a shiver go through her spine. Kevin gulped.

"Wait, Anderson's back, and we all know Jerome is a suspect in Zach's killing. What about Reinhardt?" Kevin asked. I turned to face Mack.

"Was Reinhardt arrested for cannibalism?" I asked her. Mack's eyes seemed cloudy. I awaited patiently for her answer while the impatient Keven started looking through the records.

"I never arrested Christina Reinhardt. She was a ruthless killer and I had all the evidence she left behind. I had solid proof." I began.

"So what happened?" Talianna asked.

"The police department I worked for had a hidden drug oporation. When I came up with the evidence, the cheif thought her arrest might bring attention to the department and attention was not what they wanted. He refused to let me arrest her. That's when I quit being an officer and started being a private detective. I never thought I would see her again."

"What was her emo?" asked Talianna.

"Well most of her victim's were men and we would find them with their...." I paused and looked at Kevin. He was sitting down now, still looking through records.

"Their...um....penis cut off"

Kevin looked up in horror, looked around the room as if Christina was in the room right then, and crossed his legs.
