<Jake Fenton slammed the door lazily behind him and poured himself a bourbon. No ice. Rather too casually, he slung his jacket and shoulder holster down on the cot in the corner of the room, and slumped tiredly into his chair.

Almost by instinct, he reached to the breast pocket of his shirt and brought a cigar up to his mouth. He chewed off the ends and spat them onto the floor, where the detritus of the last few busy days had been building. What the heck, it was somewhere to lay his head.

His expert fingers flipped the zippo alight, and casually tossed it in the air to light the cigar, before catching and closing it in one movement. He took a sip of the burning liquor, and turned to gaze out of the window at the rain-sodden streets, below. The streets teemed with people, covering their heads with newspaper as they scurry their way home to their wives or off to their mistresses. He found himself idly wondering who they all are, what they all do... What makes them tick...

As she watched the reticent Lemony creep into the deluge that had gripped the city, a young boy wearing a newsie cap, huddled under a paper, approached her, tapping her on the forearm, his teeth chattering as he looked up at her. "You cfm?"

She tore her gaze from the scene around her, and gave the soggy child her full attention. "Yes, I am...." She looked at him curiously, her arm still holding her coat to Daniella's back.

The boy reached up and handed her a note with his trembling hand. She smiled down at him and quickly pulled a dollar from her pocket in exchange for his delivery. "Thank you; now get your self out of this down pour before you catch cold!"

"Thank you miss....I will." He stumbled backward as he ran across town with a wide grin and his paper clutched to his head.

Shaking her head, she slipped a finger beneath the lip of the envelope and tugged it open with one swift movement of her hand. The rain drops were still pounding the pavement with large splashes in the puddles as she read the note, her eyes darkened quickly to match the shade of the clouds above her.

She looked over at Daniella, reluctant to leave the girl there alone, but not having much choice in the matter. "I have to go. Keep the coat, and put it on, please...."

She looked over her shoulder at Fenton, smoke swirling and mixing with the tears from the sky as he watched the rain and drama of the city. She briefly took in the strong features of his jaw, nose, and brow, but then she remembered the look she'd seen in his eyes earlier. He was going to be one to watch, no doubt about that.

She lifted her hand and smiled before she disappeared around a corner, briskly making her way to Sami's, the water splashing up her calves with each step. She was grateful for the rain. It tempered her anger and frustration that would otherwise have her throwing punches, or books in her office.

"cfm, where are you goin'? Oh well, as cool as she is, she sure manages to get out of here as quick as though she were walking on coals." She strolled up to the next apartment building, and went into room 2A. New as she was to the game, she had gotten a lotta cash. "I'm gonna hit the town." And out she went without a care, in a gorgeous silk coat clashing with her red dress.

She stepped out of a small clohting boutique, this time in a more modest, sensible outfit. A trenchcoat over an argyle sweater, and a knee length pencil skirt. She walked home, glancing up at the clock. " Tick tock." She said to herself. She called up cfm. "Kiddo, did you really think I'd go out like that on my own demise? No. I was in disguise. I needed to weasel an answer out of someone if you know what I mean. It was just a prop. Silly. Gotta go. See you at the party tonight? Yeah, it'll be the social event of the season. Anyone who's anyone will be there. I gotta go, out shopping for the outfit. Ok, toodles." And out she went...

Correction: "clothing" boutique. Ha, our new character isn't so scandalous after all.

Lemony flipped the money in his hands and attempted to smile. His girlfriend just broke up with him. She said he was too busy "playing detective." He just recieved $360, but no amount of money could bring back his love. He tried to shrug his thoughts off and go back to his office, quickly stopping buy the bar on his way.

The next afternoon. Jake had been laying low for most of the day, getting ready for his 'date' with the music teacher. A quick phone call to Sami's had reserved a table in a private, dark alcove at the back of the restaurant. He got there early, about 7pm, dressed casually in light cotton pants, white shirt, tweed jacket and a trilby as opposed to the traditional trenchcoat, the uniform of the gumshoe. Fifty dollars to the waitress kept the coffee coming with no questions asked, and he told her to send Angela Caban over to join him when she arrived. She had some answering to do, but he had his methods of persuasion.

Jake sat in the dim light of the alcove, facing the doorway. He knew she wasn't going to arrive for a while, but kept a watchful eye on the human traffic. It was moderately busy for a Friday, but there were plenty of tables so he was pretty relaxed. They wouldn't be overheard.

He unfolded his newspaper so people were less likely to bother him - nothing says 'I'm busy' like a broadsheet in front of the face. He peered out over the paper from under the brim of his hat, and waited to see what the evening would turn up.

Jake patted his left forearm, feeling the reassuring shape of his pearl-handled dagger under the sleeve of his jacket, and stopped himself with a quiet curse. He hated to admit it, but it was a nervous habit, and a dangerous one. "Time for a smoke," he thought, while he watched the world go by and waited for his rendezvous.

One thing was certain - there were more surprises in store for him this evening.

"Cyrus," he groaned, sitting down at a red stool. "Get me somethin stronger tonight. I'm feelin down." The stout bartender looked at the saddened detective and smiled comfortly before turning his back. Light jazz was playing that night, making Lemony feel even more alone.
"So, you're gettin the specil, huh?"
Lemony spun his head around. The voice came from the shady character in the back of the bar. He motioned for the detective to sit next to him. Lemony did as he was commanded. "Look, I know whats buggin you. Its happened to me hundreds of times." Lemony couldnt tell if this man was sober or not."Well, I know a few people who can help." I leaned in as to hear him better. He smiled. "Their names are Jake Fenton and Madame Giry..."
