Jake Fenton

<Jake Fenton slammed the door lazily behind him and poured himself a bourbon. No ice. Rather too casually, he slung his jacket and shoulder holster down on the cot in the corner of the room, and slumped tiredly into his chair.

Almost by instinct, he reached to the breast pocket of his shirt and brought a cigar up to his mouth. He chewed off the ends and spat them onto the floor, where the detritus of the last few busy days had been building. What the heck, it was somewhere to lay his head.

His expert fingers flipped the zippo alight, and casually tossed it in the air to light the cigar, before catching and closing it in one movement. He took a sip of the burning liquor, and turned to gaze out of the window at the rain-sodden streets, below. The streets teemed with people, covering their heads with newspaper as they scurry their way home to their wives or off to their mistresses. He found himself idly wondering who they all are, what they all do... What makes them tick...

At that exact moment, another newbie was walking those same streets, looking at those same people. He approached Mr. Fenton's window rather rudely.
"Excuse me, sir, could you give me the time?" he asked, coldy. "Me pocket watch was stolen a few weeks ago."
This mysterious man used the codename LemonyShepard. His real name was completely unknown to the public. He popped up his trench jacket collar and narrowed his eyes. It was quite obvious that this man trusted no one...

She stood on the corner, her shoulder leaning against the light post, ankles crossed, and hands folded casually at her lap, rain pouring down her face and body, but she didn't seem to notice. She was casing the Conservatory, waiting to pounce at the call of a favor by Angela. She'd been waiting for two days, and still Ms. Caban was denying any work to Mojo.

Tilting her face to the heavy drops above, she closed her eyes and let them caress the frustration and anger from her skin. She laughed softly to herself as she watched the skirmish of hunched over forms with their umbrellas and ink smeared newspapers over their heads. They acted as though they would melt, and the occasional stranger would almost offer to share and rescue the poor damsel in distress, but stopped short of any words escaping their dropped jaws as soon as they looked into her sparkling eyes and glistening, wet lips curled into a contented smile.

As she stood to stretch her stiff muscles, she saw the unmistakable signs of new detective in town, the biggest one the magnifying glass he clutched in his hand, not to mention the frustrated scowl on his face. She glanced over at the building that held the music teacher's office and decided she probably had plenty of time to stop by and offer a quick welcome to New York.

She tugged on the soaked emerald silk of her coat and tucked the strand of dark hair clinging to her cheek behind her ear with a quick sweep of her hand. Still not giving the slightest recognition of the down pour soaking the city, her steps were smooth and deliberate as she approached the man tapping on the window, over hearing him asking for the time.

"You don't need a pocket watch around here." Her voice was soft and musical, almost matching the rhythm of the rain. As he turned to face her, she leaned her back against the building, furled her arm, and pointed toward the clock above City Hall. "It can be seen from anywhere in town."

The clock tower read 6:50. It should still be light at this time of year, but the skies were heavy with clouds, and the clouds were pregnant with rain. New York was every bit the grimy den of iniquity he'd been led to believe, and more. So much the better - Jake always had thrived on the dirtier aspects of life, and he was sure to find them all here. Murder, vice, cruelty... all the stuff the rain could never wash away; this was what gave him purpose.

Jake slung a record on his gramophone player. Stokowski conducting some Bach orchestration. The music was at once melancholy and uplifting. He peered through the plume of blue-grey cigar smoke and stepped up to the window.

"Hey, CFM...", his voice rumbled. He looked her up and down, attempting to give a casual air. Her dainty features were deceptive - this broad was cute. Real cute. Not a dame to be underestimated, but he knew he was tempted and the only thing he could never resist was temptation. One of these days it was gonna get him in a whole heap of trouble. Her silk coat was drawn tightly around her waist and her slender ankles told him that she had a figure to die for, and he was sure some men probably had already. Jake didn't know exactly what he was planning to say to her, but she intrigued him, and he wanted to see what he could find out about this place.

"What's up, doll? You wanna take some cover? The streets are lookin' rough tonight. And maybe we can be of... assistance to each other?".

At that moment, petite Daniella Giry, using the cover of Madame for the ring of it, strolled down the street, managing to float in her black stillettos. Considering the rainy circumstances, that was a miracle. Her peekaboo garter held up black tights, revealing shapely calves that went on for miles. A little farther up, a red silk dress was hugging the curves, the color matching those plump lips. She wore no coat, and showed no sign that she was freezing. Her delicate arms were warmed by long, black, satin gloves. Those hands peeked up the edge of her fedora, throwing a wink at Jake. She struggled to light her slim cigarette, desperately in need of a lighter. She continued, catching the eye of all around her.

Her long brown hair drowned slim shoulders. She flipped her hair, the blond strands catching what little light there was. Nobody knew she was alone... and nobody knew she still longed for love.

Lemony took a glance at the clock tower and coughed with embarresment. He thanked CFM and walked on. He was on his way to his office near the train station. He was so new to this city. These people were so...secretive, as if they were all up to something. He shrugged the thought off and pressed on.

Lemony came from the underpopulated city of Newport. He missed that place so much. The smell of the salt water crashing against the docks and the fresh fish they would sell at the market. However, after he solved his first case there he was forced to retreat to another city. He was being stalked by a sinister man who was out for revenge.

Trying to forget his hateful past, he approached the train station and snuck into the small, nearly invisible door leading to his office...

She heard the low growl in his voice before she saw his face. Rolling toward the open window as she stood, she glanced the stranger smelling of smoke and whiskey up and down. She grinned slyly as she noticed his eyes roaming up and down her form, in spite of his attempt to hide it. He was new in town, she guessed from is attire. "I think I'll stay out here in the rain. I'm on the job," she nudged her head in the direction of the Conservatory across the street, "Angela has a grudge against Mojo at the moment and I'm waiting for her to lighten up a bit." Her fingertips brushed lightly across her cheek as she wiped the soothing drops gently from her skin. She was ready to slide some cold cash toward Isabella Santanelli in order to drum up some business from the music teacher.

As she watched the doorway, she saw the scantily clad Daniella stalking across the street and she groaned softly. That girl was better at finding and causing trouble than just about anyone else she knew. Turning to the two men by her side, she bit out an apologitic excusal, and she ran up to Daniella's side, wrapping one arm around the girls shoulder while unfastening and slipping her own wet coat from her back and arms.

"Daniella, girl, what are you doing out here dressed like that this time of night with weather like this? You're going to get us all in trouble." She draped the coat over the girls arms as the small fingers of her friend curled around a cigarette and her lashes fluttered from beneath the had at the new guys in town.
