Research is an essential skill and one of the best in the game. It allows you to eliminate one suspect with a false or no alibi from being the guilty person. It is essential in the harder levels of the game, and makes the earlier levels a breeze. I highly recommend it.

You go to the City Hall and click on Hall of Records and then Research Current Case. You won't get any results if the suspect you're going to get information about isn't on your suspect list yet.

How many unused skill points does it take?

Horace, that depends on you detective archetype. As a very smart detective it'll cost less than a very tough or very charming one.

If you glance over the help file and the Newbie FAQ you'll find more information on the various available skills.

It is a smart skill, so more smart your avatar is, the cheaper it is to buy. I *think* its 11 skills basic, but it may be 13. Minus 2 if your are smart plus *something* (like I'm smart and charming) and -4 if your character is totally smart.

Based on the skill help file it seems that it's -3

"For instance, if a Very Charming detective wants to learn Interrogation, it will cost them 7 skill points to learn it, however, it would cost a Very Tough detective only 4 skill points."
