You get two. One Physical Evidence (barber, tailor etc.) contact, and one non Physical Evidence (waiter, Priest etc.) contact.

As far as how long, it is random.

Actually, it is RANDOM. The idea that you get it at about 1000 exp is a myth.

I know that im new but I dont understand what you guys are talking about. How do you get these people? What is a Shady Guy? Ive only solved about 3-5 cases and I have no clue

Every 4 cases, you can ask the townspeople if you can do a favour for them. They will either say yes, or direct you to another townsperson who needs a favour. You can then play an extra case. If you successfully find the murderer, the townsperson will usually give you a piece of equipment which you can keep or sell. At some point, one will tell you that if you ever need anything, you can ask them. That townsperson will now answer as many questions as you want and never clam up. You will eventually get one that tells you about physical evidence (barber, tailor, shoe maker or banker), and one of the other townspeople as contacts.

Shady can be found in the bar. If you have made false accusations, he will tell you how much you can pay him to put your record back to zero false accusations. If you build up two, it's a good idea to try to pay off Shady because at 3 false accusations, your detective will be permanently retired and you have to start all over again. But be careful because the amount needed to pay will increase with your experience points.

To play the favour cases, you have to go to the map and ask a townsperson when you are not already playing a case.

Actually you can ask when you are on a case, but they will tell you to come back when you're not busy.
