Hello all.
I'm fairly new to Sleuth and I thought I might share a little hobby of mine with you all. Here's something for that sad moment when the mysteries of the day are all done.

Thousands lay up gold within this house,
but no man made it.
Spears past counting guard this house,
but no man wards it.
What is it?

Is A like in binary? Like, you add 11 (=3) to 2 and get 5 - which is 101. So there's a 1 in the answer anyway.

And if you cut the log in half and then put the halves down next to each other and repeated, kind of like chopping celery but with power tools, it would take half as long. I think. It's too early. Or too late. Or something.

Okay, how's this.

A guy took a girl out to dinner. He decided to butter her up with a story displaying his ingenuity and skill, recounting a fantastic tale in the middle of an Arctic winter. Apparently, he saved an injured comrade and a shivering set of sled dogs with a magnifying glass and some carefully shielded tinder, soon building up a blazing fire that signaled their location and kept them warm enough until help arrived.

He ended up with bits of steak in his lap and red wine on his face.

What happened?

Alright, here's yet another Dr. H. adaptation:

It had been a rainy week, with sharp winds whipping the water into icy bullets. Lady May invited Dr. March to her house for dinner and a game. When he arrived, he found her bound and gagged on her bed, her jewelry box upended and her safe broken open. He untied her, and she pointed to the open balcony doors, sobbing that the thief had left five hours earlier, leaving her in the cold for all that time.

He checked her belongings, finding two particularly expensive furs and several small gems missing. He examined the room, finding that the roses by the balcony had scattered petals across the carpet at its threshold. He spoke to the butler, who said he had been given the night off.

Then he laughed and said "I didn't know the game would happen before dinner."

What gave the game away?

The rose petals would have blown away with the wind, the carpet would have been soaked. It supposedly had been 5 hours since the the theif left with the balcony doors open.
