Miss Majandra Belial, or "Madge" as some insist on calling her, hides a surprising mind behind a sweet, shy facade. She dreams of joining Agatha Christie, Ellis Peters, and Tony Hillerman on her bookshelf, and dabbles in "these little games" to "better develop [her] characters' authenticity."

To further that end, Miss Belial has begun C.M.L.M., a teahouse and discussion room that opens its doors to the desperate housewives and prodigal sons of the city. As her guests fuel up on cucumber sandwiches and Lady Grey, they fuel her with fantastic tales of murders most foul, and occasionally fuel her bank account for her investigative services.

Miss Belial reminds this reporter to credit Mr. Brady Perigen, her dour, unpleasant clerk, for "his unending battle against the chaos in this office"; and the elegant Dinah, the aloof little observer at C.M.L.M.'s tea parties.
