October 24, 1938- Heimlich VonVIctor felt a chill run down his spine. Autumn always had that effect on him. He looked up at the multitude of colors adorning the trees and placed his hands in his coat pockets. The pungent aroma in the air told him that, somewhere, leaves were being burnt. He took a deep breath and looked down, to the place he had visited as many times as he could in the past two years. The cold hard stone hadn’t changed a bit, and never would. It would always be a testament to the man resting under it.

FEBRUARY 10, 1892-
JUNE 15, 1936
“Justice for all. Above all else.”

He took a deep sigh. He never left anything behind, nor did he suspect that Richard would want anything left for him. He leaned down and placed his hand on the stone, “I’m doing alright Richard. Eric and I started up another agency. We’re doing it right this time, and Sergei is getting better at English every day. He’s even solving cases now; you wouldn’t believe how well he’s doing.”

“Excuse me, detective VonVictor?” a voice called behind him

Heim whirled around to find himself face to face with a young uniformed officer, “What do you want?” he demanded, “Can’t you see I’m in a cemetery?”

“Yes sir,” he responded, “and I’m terribly sorry to disturb you, but I’ve been asked to fetch you right away, it’s a matter of life and death!”

Heimlich let out a sigh, and leaned down to touch the stone again, “It never ends Richard, it never ends. I have to go now, but I’ll be back real soon.”

Besides that, he was going to have Davis killed after he got ahold of the jewel.

"I had a friend hold on to it for me," Joseph said.

"Who?" the voice whispered. The voice came from behind him.

"Davis. Joe Davis has it."

"Thank you Mr. Mayor. Now tell me, where might I find this, Joe Davis?"

"Why should I tell you?"

"Because, you just ratted him out."

"How do you know I'm not bluffing?"

"Because, Hollis, you can't afford to lose your fame."

"Are you sure that I wasn't bluffing?" The mayor asked cooly.

The man pulled something out. The mayor tried to turn to try and see if he could see what was pulled out. Then he heard that sound. The unforgivable sound. The pistol was leveled at his head, and the hammer was slowly pulled back for emphasis.

That sound made Joseph sweat out of fear.

"Do you know what is so great about that sound, Mr. Mayor?" The voice asked.

Hollis didn't answer.

"It's scary, Hollis. Now tell me, where is Davis?"

"Screw you! I'm not saying any more!"

"Oh yes you will. YOu will comply, mayor."

"And what if I don't?"

The gunshot echoed through the room. It missed.

Hollis thought at first he had been shot. His body froze. Every muscle in his body locked as he tensed and braced himself for the pain from the gunshot. But there was no pain.

"Now tell me, or so help me I will put a bullet in your leg an you will not be able to walk right until you die!"

"Fine!" the mayor cried.

"Joe Davis. You can find him on the east side of town. He likes to hang out in a small rundown bar. One that not many organized crime leaders go. It's discreet there. "

"What's the name of it?" The voice asked. This time, it sounded serious. And a little on the creepy side.

"I don't know. I swear to-"

BANG! The gun shot echoed again this time right by the mayor's head and he scream out loud.

"Save your breath mayor! No one can hear you! Now tell me! What is the name of the bar. I'm through playing games with you. The next shot wont' miss. It will go right through your knee cap, damaging your leg for life!"

"The name of the bar is called 'Anderson's'. It's a small place out on the other side of the city! There, I told you all I know!"

"See how easy that was? Why couldn't you have done that a second time. Because you refuesed to comply, I now have wasted two bullets on getting worthless scum such as yourself to answer my questions! Oh and Mr. Mayor? I apologize for this."

"Wh-" it was too late. He was pistol whipped accros the back of his head. It knocked him unconcious."

Marc drug the chair the mayor was tied on, outside into the dark. He threw the chair onto it's side and untied the ropes. He put Holllis in the back of his car, and dumped him back into the alley from which he was attacked.

Marc left then to go tell everyone what happened.

(One more note. That shouldn't say, "Marc left to go tell everyone what heppened. It should say he left to tell everyone what the mayor said)

"Let go of my hair!" Molly hissed, murder flashing in her eyes as her hair was cruelly yanked by the villain.

"I repeat, why are you involved with the Eye of God case?" the voice came from the darkness again.

"Because, you people aren't very subtle, are you? You're lucky half the city forces aren't beating down your door--" Molly's heated remark was cut off as she was cracked across the face, hard. She winced, but refused to cry out, instead glaring up through the inky blackness to where she estimated the face to be.

"Well consider this a warning, 'Detective'. I'd kill you right now if we didn't intend to use you as a messager. You'll provide a message for us. Back off of the case or all of you will die."

"If you release me, I'll pick up the phone and deliver your damn message." Molly said in tones of great irritation, but her blood froze over at the grim laugh that reverberated throughout the room.

"I doubt that would quite accentuate the gravity of the situation, you see. Never fear though, you will do your part to convince your colleagues to abandon the case."

"By doing what?" she asked, but she was pretty sure she knew.

"Nothing." he sneered, and the first blow fell.

"Oh hell." she said irritatedly, for this was only a prelude to the rain of blows soon to fall.

She awoke some hours later, the apartment dark and her body a throbbing mass of bruises.

"Ugh." she announced to the room in general, and then began to take inventory. She seemed to be largely whole, mostly bruises and no breaks save for the last three fingers on her right hand, undoubtedly from an attempt to protect herself.

Stiffly she rolled to her knees and hobbled slowly over to the bathroom, running her hand under the cold water as she thought.

"If they wanted to dissuade us, coming after me wasn't the smartest move." she told her reflection, then wrapped her hand in a set of bandages and collapsed on her bed.

*** The next day *** (30th of October)

Vulkie went to visit Eric in the hospital the next day, to see how he was holding up. As she entered the room of Eric, she saw a woman sitting next to Eric. Vulkie immediately froze as she recognized the lady... It was Abigail...

"Abigail, what a surprise.." Vulkie said and Abigail shrieked and immediately stood up. "Eric... he was awake for a moment... He asked me where he was... I replied that he was in the hospital... He immediately fainted..." Abigail said and Vulkie swallowed

Her Eric was awake, with a strange lady and he trusted her... He even didn't know the lady that well... She only seduced him..

"Abigail... Just... just leave... I want a moment alone with Eric...." Vulkie murmered and pointed to the door. Abigail took her handbag and immediately left.

"Eric... why... why do you trust this lady? She has betrayed you, delivered you to those... those..." Vulkie murmered and she couldn't find the right word.

Eric slowly opened his eyes. "What day is it?" Eric asked. "Eric?" Vulkie said astonished, looking in his eyes. She saw a twinkle in his eyes and a tear rolled from his face..

".... Thank you... For saving my life..." Eric murmered and Vulkie swallowed. "It's... It's... It's nothing.." Vulkie said hesitating and grabbed his hand. Eric squeezed and Vulkie let a tear roll from her face.

"You idiot... I still love you, you know that?" Vulkie said and Eric smiled. "I know... But we won't get another chance... Abigail..." Eric said and he closed his eyes, as Vulkie closed her eyes.

Vulkie stood up, went to the door and looked back. "I understand Eric... I understand..." Vulkie said and she "rushed" for the exit.

***Heim's house***

"... Has anyone seen Molly?" Marc said and everyone shook their heads. Just then, the doorbell rang and Heimlich opened the door, only to catch Molly in his arms. Molly sank through her feet.

"It seems we got a message.." Vulkie mused and everyone nodded...

"Lord, look at how clumsy I am." Molly said absently, patting Heim on the shoulder. "No need to worry dears, as you can see I'm hopelessly clumsy. Its a lucky I didn't break my neck on the way here."

With effort she straightened and flexed her damaged hand in its black glove with a wince. She had worn a black coat that went from her neck to her wrists to her knees, and it had covered up all the bruising she saw. The one on her face was covered with makeup, slightly visible but only to someone who was really looking for it.

"Had a little accident, nothing to worry about." she said in her best cheerful tones, then went in to gingerly take a seat. She took a few breaths to steady herself.

"Sorry I skipped out last night. Have we anything of interest?" she asked, an almost maniacal grin plastered on her face. She would die before she let that goon have the satisfaction of dissuading her friends from the case.

The three gathered tensely around the telephone as Anais reached forward and picked it up. "Hello?" she said cautiously into the receiver.

"Hello?" a voice crackled through the static, "My name Katia Kobetz, and I think it my fault your daughter kidnapped."

"What?" Anais demanded, "Sergei's wife? What have you done?"

"I only fall asleep for a few minutes but Sergei call me idiot and tell me not to and I am so sorry! They take my Sergei! They call here and say if Barnes is not found guilty they kill him!" she cried.

"Alright," Anais said, her chest heaving heavily, "calm down. We'll be over there in just a few moments time. She turned and headed for the door when she noticed that Heimlich had sat down in one of her armchairs and was also breathing heavily. She walked up and placed her hand on his shoulder, "I know you think of Josèe as a granddaughter. Don't worry, we'll find her and your niece as well."

Heimlich shook his head. "No," he replied, "there's something you must know. I've kept this secret for far too long. Anais do you have anything to drink?"

She frowned and shook her head. Heimlich produced his pocket flask and poured some whiskey into an empty glass. Upon noticing the look on Joseph's face he poured a second and handed it to him.

"Fourteen years ago, in the Spring of 1924, I met a woman," he began, "by the name of Cecilia Frances. She was the secretary of a defense attorney I was up against in court. Through my communications with her, we found that there was more than a business relationship, and feelings blossomed."

"So you weren't always this much of a shut in?" Anais said as she sat down.

Heimlich shot a glare at her. "As I was saying," he continued, "we began seeing each other. I was forty-three, and she was thirty-six. It wasn't unheard of, and many were happy to see her find someone at her age. My brother Albert was thirty-three at the time, and he was absolutely in love with her from the moment I brought her home."

Joseph finished his drink and held out the glass for Heimlich to fill again. "So Albert wanted Cecilia? Has there ever been anything you two didn't fight over?" he asked.

Heimlich shook his head. "Not in my memory," he replied, "but Cecilia was different. We had a connection, and Albert was so superficial. He tried wooing her for three years and nothing worked. Until one fateful day everything changed."

"What happened?" Anais demanded, now on the edge of her seat.

"It was November of 1926, and I had been at the office all day preparing for a case. I returned home, but Cecilia wasn't there, which was strange because she was always there. I searched for her frantically assuming the worse, and just when I had given up, she walked through the door. She had been on a date, with Albert."

The two detective's eyes widened. "No!" Joseph shouted, "How could she do that to you?"

"I demanded to know why." Heimlich said, his face becoming sadder with every moment, "At first she claimed it was time to move on, but then she admitted the truth. She had been to the doctor that day, and he had confirmed what she feared. At the age of thirty-eight she was to become a mother for the first time. I told her it was a blessing. I said that even though we had not wanted children, this would be a wonderful blessing."

Anais smiled for the first time all day. "If I didn't know you, I would assume you were doing some editing to this story." she said.

"She said it could never work," he said sadly, "because of the baby. She said if it was just us, then it was one thing, but now there was another life to be considered. I was forty-five and she said she couldn't bear the thought of her child not having a father. By the time the child was born, I would be forty-six. By the time the child was twenty I would be nearly seventy. Albert was thirty-four at the time, and was in much better shape to raise a child than I was."

Heimlich finished his drink and poured another. "She began seeing Albert," he continued, "and persuaded him to marry her the following January. The following August, Valerie VonVictor was born "prematurely". Cecilia died last year, and my brother has continued to raise his niece believing her to be his daughter. He's putting my daughter up for adoption. I have to do something, but if I tell him, it will destroy him."

"You have to tell him!" Anais shouted, "Heimlich! This is your chance to have a family! That smug son of a bitch doesn't care about her! You obviously do!"

Heimlich looked out the window and noticed the sun creeping up over the horizon. "We can discuss that later," he said, "right now we need to go see Mrs. Kobetz. She may be our best link to finding them."

"No," Joseph said firmly, "we will go see Mrs. Kobetz. You will go see your brother and work this out."

Heimlich glanced to Anais for a sympathetic vote, but he could see in her eyes that she was with Joseph 100%. He nodded, "Alright then." Then remembering, he reached into his pocket and handed Hoover's card back to Joseph, "As promised," he said, "I'm sorry I had to lie to you Joseph."

Joseph took the card back, but it was clear he had not forgiven Heimlich for the breach of trust.

Heimlich banged on the door of his brother's hotel room. "Albert open this door right now!" he shouted, "We need to talk!" he tried the knob and found it unlocked. He walked in to find the room a mess, several bottles lying on the floor, and Albert lying on the ground.

"Albert!" he shouted as he ran over to him, "Wake up! You need to be at court in an hour!"

Albert stirred, squinted, and looked up at Heimlich. "The bloody hell d'ya want?"

"You have to be at Barnes' trial in an hour Albert!" Heimlich said, "And from the looks of it you're still drunk."

"I'll be fine!" Albert said, pulling himself to his feet, "I can manage." he finished as he fell to the ground.

Heimlich sighed, pulled Albert to a seated position on the bed, and began combing his hair.
