October 24, 1938- Heimlich VonVIctor felt a chill run down his spine. Autumn always had that effect on him. He looked up at the multitude of colors adorning the trees and placed his hands in his coat pockets. The pungent aroma in the air told him that, somewhere, leaves were being burnt. He took a deep breath and looked down, to the place he had visited as many times as he could in the past two years. The cold hard stone hadn’t changed a bit, and never would. It would always be a testament to the man resting under it.

RICHARD CAMBRIDGE
FEBRUARY 10, 1892-
JUNE 15, 1936
“Justice for all. Above all else.”

He took a deep sigh. He never left anything behind, nor did he suspect that Richard would want anything left for him. He leaned down and placed his hand on the stone, “I’m doing alright Richard. Eric and I started up another agency. We’re doing it right this time, and Sergei is getting better at English every day. He’s even solving cases now; you wouldn’t believe how well he’s doing.”

“Excuse me, detective VonVictor?” a voice called behind him

Heim whirled around to find himself face to face with a young uniformed officer, “What do you want?” he demanded, “Can’t you see I’m in a cemetery?”

“Yes sir,” he responded, “and I’m terribly sorry to disturb you, but I’ve been asked to fetch you right away, it’s a matter of life and death!”

Heimlich let out a sigh, and leaned down to touch the stone again, “It never ends Richard, it never ends. I have to go now, but I’ll be back real soon.”

"Oh joy." Molly said under her breath when Marc announced they would be meeting Joseph. She followed him into the alleyway, the hairs on the back of her neck standing up as she assessed the dim location. Nervously she paced in a tight half-circle as Marc explained all the events of the evening, drawing closer to the alleymouth as she did so.

"Don't move! Put your hands in the air!" Joseph started, and Molly frowned, wondering what in the hell he was yelling at her for, before she turned her head and realized there was a giant monolith of a man only a few feet away from her.

"Oh, hellfire." she said, reaching for her weapon as he pulled a gun out and spun around.

Reflexively she leaped to the side, just as a brick where her head had been exploded in a cloud of red dust.

"Ack!" she squawked, narrowly avoiding another.

"Would someone please just shoot him?!" she shrieked, hurling herself across the alleymouth as another clipped her sleeve. She was moving to quickly to be able to use her gun effectively.

*Half an hour before the meeting in the alley*

Zeo called Vulkie after talking to Heimlich over his new phone line. Vulkie sound exhausted and informed Zeo that she just got home from her visit at the hospital. "Hospital? What's wrong?" Zeo inquired. Vulkie then went on to tell him everything. Zeo listen intently to Vulkie's description of the previous day's event, about the kidnapping, the money and the chase by the OS group.

"This is very peculiar." Zeo said as he lit up a Chesterfield, "The Order, again. They're up to something, definitely... but the Order is not short of money, why would they want a ransom, from you of all people, and did they kidnapped Eric just for a ransom?"

Vulkie was on the verge of tears. "Eric is still unconscious right now, so I didn't know what they were asking him. They really beat him to a pulp!"

Zeo could hear sobbing over the phone. The man tried to comfort his friend but his consolation vocabulary was worse than poor. Just then, his other phone rang. The one that was tabbed and sometimes taken over. "Vulkie. I must go now. You rest well tonight. Let's meet up tomorrow. Either Heimlich or myself will call you." He hung up immediately and stared at his other phone.

After four rings, Joseph picked up, "Hello?" he fringed tiredness as if he was being awoken.

"Joseph, it's Marc-"

"Marc, I can't talk right now. Meet me in town at the barber's. I'll be there in about five mintues."
((Note: Zeo would never say 'I cannot talk on this line' knowing full well the line was tabbed. He would not call right out the location of their meeting either (probably 'the place where we last met' would've been more appropriate), but i'll have to let that one slip this time since the story was well underway))

Zeo hung up immediately and drove to the barber. He just hoped no one was listening in.

*Fast forward to Molly being shot at*

"Would someone please just shoot him?!" Molly shrieked, hurling herself across the alleymouth as another clipped her sleeve. She was moving to quickly to be able to use her gun effectively.

Zeo aimed his revolver at the burly man but he was even quicker despite of his size. The shoot that clipped Molly's sleeve ended up in Zeo's left arm, very close to where he was shot three nights ago. Zeo grunted. He could see dark blood oozing out already.

There was a split-second pause over the scene, as the shooter realized a bullet had found a mark and glanced over to see if he had potentially killed the man. Molly, having no real great concern for Zeo, and quite sure that the man was harder to kill than the roaches that inhabited her apartment building, levelled her gun and with her signature aim, shot the man square in the chest and then moved over daintily to kick away his gun as he sprawled backwards. It skittered over the rough cement.

"This was my best coat, you know." She told him crossly, and then turned to see what all the fuss was about. She immediately saw the blood darkening Josephs shirt and went over.

"Would you like me to take the whole thing off or just rip off a sleeve?" she asked in clipped tones, intending to bind it before Joseph bled out all over the place. a makeshift tourniquet would do until he could receive medical attention, for a bullet left in an arm could only grow infected and possibly kill him.

She leaned close to survey the damage, the scent of her lilac perfume washing over the three of them.

"Marc, go check to see if that man happens to be dead." she asked, her voice distant as she gingerly rolled up the sleeve. "I'm better off not extracting this, I hope you understand."

She chewed her lip in thought for a moment, shrugged and then reached down to grasp a panel of the voluminous skirt of the Chanel gown and tore it off with a satisfying RIP! Expertly, she created a tourniquet out of the priceless material.
Finally she stepped back. "There, that ought to prevent your sudden death. Shall we give you a ride to the hospital? Or are you one of those macho men who will go out to interrogate suspects even when injured?"

She had seen the wound above the gunshot, but had said nothing. With a little sigh, she turned and moved over to the fallen man. She raised one hand, then the other, for they were both stained with Josephs blood. "how appropriate." she said dryly.

***Eric's Visit time***

As Vulkie entered the room the next day, she saw Eric lying in a bed, unconscious, his face all swollen up and a bit purple at some places. Tears began to ran over Vulkie's face and she "swooped" a seat and sat next to Eric.

"Eric... If you can hear me.... I'm.... I'm sorry that I got so late.... But I couldn't find you earlier.... I.... I.... I'm so sorry..." Vulkie said, laying her head on his unconscious body.

Vulkie took Eric's hand and prayed that he would have the power to squeeze it. "Eric, please, squeeze it. I care for you, I don't.... I.... I don't want to lose you now.... You have meant a lot for me.... for nearly 2 years, we had a relationship.... all went well.... if I weren't cursed by those visions and Ace's face...." Vulkie said and more tears began to flow

Suddenly, a doctor flew in the room and introduced himself. "Vulkie? It's me,Doctor Hoo" Doctor Hoo said.

"Doctor Hoo? The same one who treated me at the time I was almost mortally wounded?" Vulkie replied, looking astonished. (See Josèe for reference!)

"Yes, it's me... I see that you care for Mr. Marvington. He was very lucky that you found him. Your friend, Mr. Cain, explained what happened. Mr. Marvington had lost a lot of blood. If he wasn't here delivered immediately, he would've..." Doctor Hoo said.

'Died... I know Doc.. I know... But luckily for him, I came for him" Vulkie replied.

"I... I've got to go now. It's best for Eric that he gets some rest... I'm sure of that..." Vulkie said and she rushed past Doctor Hoo, out of the hospital, towards her apartment.

The phone immediately rang again. "Vulkie here" Vulkie said. "Vulkie,it's me,Joseph.." the other person said...

"Hiya Joseph. Sorry you couldn't reach me so soon... I was in the hospital..." Vulkie replied.

"Hospital?! What's wrong" Joseph inquired. Vulkie immediately began to tell the events, about hearing that Eric was kidnapped, that she saved him , that she and Sergei were chased and that she visited Eric today in the hospital and she also told her conclusion based on what the kidnapper said to her.

Vulkie could hear Joseph lit a cigarette. "Probably Chesterfield..." Vulkie thought.

"This is very peculiar..." Joseph said and he inhaled his cigarette and blew the smoke away.

Vulkie couldn't hold her tears much longer, and said : "Eric is still unconscious right now, so I didn't know what they were asking him. They really beat him to a pulp!"

Vulkie began to sob and cry together and Joseph replied with : "Vulkie, I must go now. You rest well tonight. Let's meet up tomorrow. Either Heimlich or myself will call you." After Joseph said that, he hung up.

Vulkie trembled with the phone hook in her hand and managed to place it back, before she fell back to the ground again.

"I'm getting much older now... And weaker..." Vulkie murmered and stood up and went to her bed, resting for the next day. A meeting would take place...

"He's dead. Good aim, Molly." Marc said as he examined the man on the ground. He went on to search the dead man's body. There was nothing much except for a small type-written card in his jacket. Marc raised the card to the light and it read:

Zeo: Marc, I can't talk right now. Meet me in town at the barber's. I'll be there in about five minutes.

"My God, that was exactly what you said on the phone!" Marc exclaimed.

"That was why I couldn't talk. My phone is tapped by the Order." Zeo smile bitterly. Thanks to Molly the bleeding had slowed, for now. "I'll explain along the way, I believe Heimlich's place is just around the corner. I hope he doesn't mind the interruption. I need to find a place to take this bullet out as soon as possible." Zeo wanted to minimize the damage to his left arm as much as possible. Two bullets in three days... these are not vitamins... Zeo took a last look at the dead brute on the ground, "Should we just leave him here?"

"This is the streets of New York, brother. The cops wouldn't think much of it." Marc said, "And if the Order of Socrates sees this, it's our message to them."

Zeo smiled to himself. They seemed to be giving the Order quite a few messages lately. He was just glad these were all done outside the Bureau jurisdiction, so that OS had nothing on the Feds. Zeo went on to account to Marc what happened the night before as they walked to Pierce's car. They were in front of Heimlich's house in less than a minute.

Heimlich brought the steaming cup of tea to his lips and took a small sip. He looked down at the newspaper article in his lap and leaned over to write something in his notebook.

"Fascinating," he said to no on in particular, "evidentally the Eye of God is thought to have a healing effect by returning the body to it's previously unmarred state." He chuckled to himself wondering if Barnes ever had an unmarred state. It was hard to picture him without his huge gut, greasy skin, and oily unkempt hair.

Just then there was a knock at the door. Who could be calling on him at this hour? It was nearly 1 am! Heimlich put his newspapers and tea down on the endtable and drew his revolver from the holster. He walked over to the door and threw it open. Standing on his steps was Joseph, supported by Molly and Marc.

"Don't shoot!" Molly shouted, "He's already been shot once tonight!

"Shot?" Heimlich exclaimed, "My God what happened?"

"No time for that now!" Marc insisted, "We can explain everything later!"

Heimlich beckoned for them to enter.

******

"Eric attacked?" Heimlich asked as he worked the tweezers into Joseph's wound, "What happened?"

"He was kidnapped," Joseph replied wincing, "but Vulkie rescued him! Oh God! The whiskey!"

Molly rushed forward, shoved the bottle in his mouth, and tipped it back. Joseph began waving his free arm for a few seconds before coughing and Molly pulled the bottle away.

"Molly!" Marc yelled, "You're trying to dull the pain, not get him drunk!"

"I'm just trying to help!" Molly snapped back.

Just then, Heimlich pulled the bullet free and the blood began to flow, Marc pressed a rag against the wound to absorb the blood, and Molly slowly tipped the whiskey bottle back in Zeo's mouth to give him a little drink.

Zeo smiled. "Just like old times right Heimlich?" he asked.

Heimlich nodded. "Yes indeed," he replied, "I'll be heading to the museum tomorrow. You're welcome to stay here tonight."

The next morning Heimlich walked into the kitchen to make himself a cup of tea, only to find Molly sitting at his table drinking a cup already.

She smiled at him. "It took forever for me to get Pierce to agree to leave without me, but I did it." she said.

"How are you feeling today?" Heimlich asked as he poured the remaining water from the kettle into his cup.

"I'm alright," Molly responded, "but I'd really like to know why everyone is trying to kill us. Joseph and Marc are still sleeping."

"Why not come with me then?" Heimlich asked, "You can help me search the museum for clues."

Molly nodded. "Now that sounds like the best idea I've heard in a while."

******

When they arrived at the museum, they could tell something was wrong. Police were everwhere; far too many for a simple robbery. Heimlich pulled his car over and they both jumped out and ran towards the museum. They were stopped just outside the perimeter by a uniformed officer.

"Hold it!" the officer snapped, "You're not going anywhere! This area is off limits."

Heimlich pulled out his PI License. "Heimlich VonVictor, private investigator and detective. I've been retained to investigate the robbery. This is my associate Molly Maltese."

The officer shook his head, "I'm sorry, but it's beyond robbery now, and I can't let anyone in."

"What's happened?" Molly demanded, "You can't bar us entrance. You're hindering an investigation!"

The police officer glared at them. "Go home and listen to the radio if you want to know!" he ordered, "If you don't leave right now I'll arrest you both for trespassing."

Heimlich looked at Molly, nodded, and the two returned to the car. Driving home in silence, Heimlich kept his foot on the gas. He wouldn't stop for anything. Something had happened and it was of vital importance to his case.

The two burst into Heimlich's apartment, slammed the door shut, and ran over to the radio. Heimlich flipped it on, began to tune it to the news, but found that every station was broadcasting the same feed.

"If you're just joining us today, we are told that an important development was found in the Graham Barnes case this morning." the news anchor's voice crackled over the radio, "We are now going live to the steps of City Hall where Robbery Captain William Steele is about to make a statement."

There was a moment of silence before the familiar voice of Captain Steele invaded his house. "We have been actively searching for daytime security guard John Kincaid, who has not been seen since The Eye of God was stolen. I am sad to report that this morning, at 7:34 am, detectives located Mr. Kincaid's body inside of a sarcophagus in the Egyptian exhibit. His keys were missing, and inside the sarcophagus, detectives discovered a small card with the symbol of The Order of Socrates on it. Upon further examination, a hair belonging to Graham Barnes was discovered stuck to the card, along with a thread from his uniform under Mr. Kincaid's fingernails. As there is no current robbery captain, I will continue to supervise this investigation with both robbery and homicide detectives. Thank you."

Heimlich looked at Molly. "This makes no sense! Why would Barnes take the keys from Kincaid? He had his own! And we know Barnes isn't in the Order of Socrates!"

The radio crackled again, "We now understand that Philadelphia assistant district attorney Albert VonVictor, the prosecutor on this case, is about to make a statement."

"Good morning," his brother's voice said, "in light of the evidence uncovered by Captain Steele's investigation, I will be amending the indictment against Mr. Barnes to include a charge of murder in the first degree. On behalf of the people of New York, I will be entering notice of intent to seek the death penalty in this case. Thank you."
