Heimlich VonVictor

October 24, 1938- Heimlich VonVIctor felt a chill run down his spine. Autumn always had that effect on him. He looked up at the multitude of colors adorning the trees and placed his hands in his coat pockets. The pungent aroma in the air told him that, somewhere, leaves were being burnt. He took a deep breath and looked down, to the place he had visited as many times as he could in the past two years. The cold hard stone hadn’t changed a bit, and never would. It would always be a testament to the man resting under it.

RICHARD CAMBRIDGE
FEBRUARY 10, 1892-
JUNE 15, 1936
“Justice for all. Above all else.”

He took a deep sigh. He never left anything behind, nor did he suspect that Richard would want anything left for him. He leaned down and placed his hand on the stone, “I’m doing alright Richard. Eric and I started up another agency. We’re doing it right this time, and Sergei is getting better at English every day. He’s even solving cases now; you wouldn’t believe how well he’s doing.”

“Excuse me, detective VonVictor?” a voice called behind him

Heim whirled around to find himself face to face with a young uniformed officer, “What do you want?” he demanded, “Can’t you see I’m in a cemetery?”

“Yes sir,” he responded, “and I’m terribly sorry to disturb you, but I’ve been asked to fetch you right away, it’s a matter of life and death!”

Heimlich let out a sigh, and leaned down to touch the stone again, “It never ends Richard, it never ends. I have to go now, but I’ll be back real soon.”

Pierce cracked open the door, one hand on his gun but he relaxed when he saw Marc.

"Come on in" he grunted, and Marc did so just as Molly came around the corner.

"Oh hello there." she said warmly, and then twirled in her new dress. "What to you think? It's that Chanel womans!"

The bottom of the dress, which flared out somewhere around her hips, was a cheery mass of tulle and fringe beads that reached all the way to her smart kitten heels. Her red hair was in perfect Marcel waves that framed her face and ran stubbornly down her back, despite the days latest fashions. She would take a page from the book of Olive Borden and Lillian Gish, thank you!

"Let us go to this party, Marc." Molly's attentions already diverted to other things. "There are a few guests in attendance that I know, this may help us. I hope you have a plan for getting through on the guest list?"

She shrugged on a white mink and motioned for him to follow out the door. "Of course, perhaps I ought to do the talking. I'm quite good at it, I daresay. Getting out of sticky situations. Not talking in general."

Presently they loaded themselves into her town car and Pierce pulled out into traffic, bound for O'Leary's snazzy event.

Marc couldn't take his eyes of Molly the whole ride to the party. It was a short ride to the party. As they got out of the car, they could see the guests arriving as well. "This is going to be good," Marc thought to himself.

"What's your plan?" Molly asked him quietly as they approached the door. In front of the door was a large man in a suit similar to Marc's holding a guest list.

"Names?" He asked.

"I'm Giovanni Pallini, Duke of Lecara Friddi, Sicily. And this here is my wife, Maria Pallini, Dutchess of Lecara Friddi, Sicily. We've been invited by a Mr. O'Leary." Marc said in an authentic Sicilian accent.

"I'm sorry Mr....Pallini? You're names aren't on the list..I'm afraid I can't let you in.."

"What?! You can't let me in? I was invited by him personally and you can't let me in all because my name isn't on a list?! Fine! You will be explaining to him why I wasn't able to attend tis.....tis...gatering!" Marc yelled at him. People turned around to see what was going on.

The guy straitened up.

"I'm terrible sorry sir. Please go on in."

"Gratzi." Marc said as they entered the party.

"Giovanni? Maria?" Molly said laughing.

Marc laughed as well.

"Did you have a different plan?" Marc said as they entered the ball room.

"Now what?" Molly asked.

"We watch him but dont' make it obvious. We should dance and keep an eye on him. I can see him from here. He's blond wearing a gray pin stripped suit with a tie. When the party ends we make our move. Put him in an interrogation room, make an interrogation, and leave him to wake up in the morning with a killer headache." Marc said. "Unless of course..you have a different plan." Marc said looking at Molly.

Molly thought this all over and then gave a twinkly smile. "Then you ought to ask me to dance."

Marc at once gallantly bowed and properly supplicated for her to bestow a favor of a dance on him, and after a moment of pretend thought, she agreed. Presently he swept her up and they moved themselves seamlessly across the dance floor to a better vantage point.

Marc spun Molly out, and as she twirled back in and loosely set her hands at his shoulders, she whispered, "I think you ought to let me have a talk with him first, Marc. If he's the type to throw such a ritzy party, he may react better to a charming woman than an irritable brute such as yourself."

Her slick red lips stretched in a vulpine grin, and as she moved out again, another guest smoothly cut in.

"I'm sorry, but I haven't been able to take my eyes off you!" the handsome man said, with a dimpled grin. Molly smiled and pretended to fan herself, batting her eyelashes as they swayed across the dance floor. She gave a wink to Marc over the man's shoulder and looked pointedly in the direction of a small alcove, suggesting he wait for her there. She then proceeded to guide her admirer around in a wide half-circle, always careful to keep her target within her view.

Anais gave Josee a long lecture on why the little girl shouldn't be snooping on others, but from how Zeo saw it, it was only making Josee a better eavesdropper the next time around. He could already see a detective in the making, and he was not sure if that was putting a smile on his face or giving him premature heart attack.

"I think I should go now, Anais, seeing that you're alright." Zeo interrupted. Anais wanted to say something but Zeo stopped her by addressing his daughter, "Josee, mommy will put you to bed now and you better really sleep this time!" Josee protested in futility. Zeo gave Anais a hug before he left, and whispered in her ear "Don't worry about Central Park, I'll take care of it. You already have your hands full with Josee, and I cannot thank you enough for that!" Anais gazed into Joseph's eyes but ended up saying nothing.

As Zeo drove to Central Park he noticed some fresh cat hair in his vehicle, but his cat was nowhere in sight. There was too much in his mind to worry about that for now. Zeo parked the car in a distance and trotted silently towards The Sheep Meadow, which until a few years ago really was inhabited by sheep.

The field was quiet and lifeless. The deep autumn wind bullied Zeo into pulling up the collar of his trench coat. Hiding behind the abandoned sheepfold, the man adjusted his eyes to the darkness and scanned the horizon for any movement.

11:45pm. A man lit a cigarette by the trees, seemingly watching the field.

Zeo remained motionless and waited. He silently thanked Hoover for the months of surveillance the bureau director forced upon him. Zeo stayed where he was, becoming part of the scenery. Besides having a pulse and his eyes open, the federal detective could be declared dead by anyone watching him. Hours later, the man by the tree began to move. He probably decided that his target was not to show up.

Not knowing that he now became the target, the man briskly walked south, towards the City Hall. Zeo knew it. The imposter must be from the Order of Socrates.

Zeo followed the man from a distance, careful not a make a sound. He saw the man entered the City Hall from a side door, with keys, at 3am in the morning. There was no doubt where he was coming from.

**The Next Morning**

A soft ray of sunlight was peaking through the kitchen window. Zeo had stayed up the rest of the night in the kitchen thinking about case. The cat wasn't home; perhaps it was out catching mice, but it should be back by daybreak, which it didn't. Zeo downed his last drop of coffee and headed for the office. The car radio was playing "A Kiss to Build A Dream On" by Louis Armstrong. For some reason it made him thought of Anais.

"Is Hoover in?" Zeo asked his fellow agent Greenberg as he stepped into the war room. His partner nodded. "I need to talk to him. It may take a while. If anyone call me just tell them I'm out for a moment. Just take a message for me."

Zeo entered Hoover's office and told the man about his home phone line being over taken and the 'impostor' from the City Hall. "We're playing a dangerous political game here," Hoover mused, "OS has the ability to do severe damages to the bureau. Apparently they know we're onto something. They haven't realized you've figured out the phone situation, have they?"

"I don't think they have yet. I kept a low profile last night as well." Zeo looked at the director with dark circles under his eyes. "My external source is going after Tim O'Leary of the Greenhand. They might know something about the thief operation as well."

Hoover nodded. He then ordered Zeo to obtain another secret house line from the switch board while keeping the current one idle. It might be useful in the future. "Let your close associates know to call you on your new line, pinhead! And make sure your men are discreet about the case!"

Zeo left for the switch board before Greenberg could talk to him. "Not now," Zeo told Greenberg on his way out, "I'll return later in the day."

It took a good part of the day for Zeo to get the new phone line working without disrupting his existing 'dummy line'. By the time Zeo returned to the office, it was already close to 5pm. Greenberg told him someone named Marc Lacrimosa called him in the morning and left his office number. Zeo tried calling Marc at the office but no one answered. He supposed Marc was busy at work and decided to find him tomorrow. He then went on to call Anais and Heimlich and told them about the new phone number.

Heimlich seemed to be uneasy and told Zeo that he might call a meeting soon. Zeo told Heimlich that he'd wait for his call at his new number. He just hope no one was eavesdropping at their telephone lines.

***Vulkie's House***

"What's taking them so long..." Vulkie murmered and she walked in rounds in her living room. At first, she didn't know what to do, but then it became clear. She still had feelings for Eric and wanted to protect him, no matter what. "But why am I doing this? Marvington can rot in hell if I want to..." Vulkie said and made an evil grin. But then, the picture that Vulkie saw earlier came back at her.

"No, he's a friend. I'll do whatever I can do to protect my friends..." Vulkie murmered and then the doorbell rang.

"Great, I hope it's..." Vulkie said and opened the door, only to reveal Sergei.

"Sergei? What are you doing here?" Vulkie said, looking "amazed"

"Von..." Sergei began, but Vulkie interrupted. "That bastard! If I get my hands on him, letting me down like this!" Vulkie said and she rushed for the phone and angrily began to dial Heimlich's number. Only to be interrupted by Sergei, who put the phone back on the hook.

"VonVictor has much on his mind these days Vulkie. He sounded tired, and I believe he really is..." Sergei said and Vulkie nodded. "VonVictor called me and asked to me if I could go instead of him. Just let him rest for a while, Vulkie.." Sergei added and Vulkie again nodded.

Just then, the doorbell rang. "Coming!" Vulkie shouted and there stood Charlie. "Hiya Vulkie. So, what's the problem?" Charlie asked, while Sergei stood behind her. "Alright, here's the thing..." Vulkie began and she explained the situation...

"So, that's what happened" Vulkie ended and Charlie looked amazed, just as Sergei did. "But I thought Eric was on leave?' Sergei said astonished.

"No, he was kidnapped. And I believe the kidnapper has connections to a faction,in this city!" Vulkie said. "How come you think so? Marvington could be kidnapped by anyone.." Charlie said and Vulkie nodded.

"You're forgetting something Charlie. The kidnapper said he 'was of value', that he had valuable information." Vulkie said. "That could mean two things : 1. The kidnapper needed Eric to reveal something of great importance, or 2. The kidnapper wanted me to find out something." Vulkie added.

"How is second conclusion based?" Sergei asked.

"Ah, that's where it becomes interesting Sergei. He wanted me to know that Eric was in trouble and "force" me to meet him, only to "kidnap" me for information. That's a possibillity.." Vulkie said and she cocked her gun.

"Gentleman,at 11 hours from now,it's noon tomorrow. We need to get 100.000 dollars, cash, ready... I have the money,I'll need your help to protect me..." Vulkie said and asked if they would agree. Sergei immediately agreed, only Charlie hesitated a bit...

**At the Ball**

Marc and Molly danced keeping a close eye on O'Leary, whom seemed to be enjoying himself. The music was played by a jazz band and hundreds of people danced to it. Marc was surprised to see how many people actually liked jazz music.

The party started to end around 11:30 that night. Marc and Molly snuck upstairs and found O'Leary's room. They turned off the lights and waited for him. With in 30 minutes, O'Leary walked in. Marc hit O'Leary on the head knocking him to the ground.

Marc put O'Leary in his desk chair and tied a rope around him. O'Leary wasn't unconscious but he was dazed. When he came two, he only saw the figures of two people standing in front of him. One of them was a woman.

The other, was a taler man. All O'Leary could see was the outline of the two people.

The woman stepped forward. Then she spoke.

"It sounds risky Vulkie, but I'll help you, for old times sake. You've done a lot for me and I've done a lot for you. But you'll owe me a bottle or 2 of some fine scotch!' Charlie said and I nodded.

"Right. As I said, the meeting is taking place at the docks. You both better not be late. As I said, noon tomorrow. Be at the docks and take some cover or stay in a car, I don't care. Just... Just help me out on this..." Vulkie said and Sergei and Charlie both nodded.

***The Meeting***

As Vulkie watched at her dad's pocket watch, it said she still had 5 minutes left. Vulkie was standing at the docks, smoking a cigarette and a briefcase next to her, with 100.000 dollars. Charlie stayed in a car, his gun ready and aiming at Vulkie,in case she was attacked. Sergei was hiding behind some boxes, just in case he could rush towards her.

"Where the hell he's staying..." Vulkie murmered and blowed some smoke away.

Just then, a small figure walked up to her and whispered : "Let's take a walk..."

Vulkie nodded, picked up the briefcase and she walked with the figure.

"Where's Eric? Is he alright? Is he still alive?' Vulkie asked, but the man didn't reply.

"I know what you're up to Vulkie. Your friends are here,I can smell them from a mile. But that's good, I don't care. I just want the money, that's all. Is it all there?" the figure said and asked, as he stopped and pointed to the briefcase.

"Yes" Vulkie replied and she opened the briefcase. It showed 100 dollar bills, all packed up nicely.

"Good. You can find your friend, Mr. Marvington, at the warehouse next to you." the man said and he picked up the briefcase.

"SERGEI, NOW!' Vulkie shouted and Sergei rushed towards her and the man. The man made a run for it, but Vulkie aimed her gun and shot him in his leg, making him fall down in the water. "Fish the basterd up. If he's lying about Eric, I'll torture him for eternity!" Vulkie shouted to Sergei and Sergei picked up a "fishing" pole and pulled...
