In an effort to liven up the boards again, some of us have decided to resuscitate the Daily pub quiz but we will be doing
it on a weekly basis. This is a tribute to the original founder, jstkdn. We have decided to take turns coming
up with the questions. The team consists of myself, Ms. Helen, nicnic and detectivehappy.
1. Each week we will post 10 questions.
2. Each Quiz runs exactly one week.
3. The first person that has all 10 questions right, wins. Or if no one has all questions right, the best one wins.
4. You can only post answers ONCE for the same quiz.
5. No cash involved. Just glory. :)

Corrections.
Rocky Mountain Oyster is a Buffalo Testicle or Bull Testicle
And a Buffalo Chip is Buffalo Poo used as firewood.
And Bonus #5 They either search for poo or they look for horse hair in the paint on the pottery is my guess
The others I leave to Christine. Smarter than me :-)

Ok guys, nice try but time's up. Here goes, let's see if I can remember all of them (except bonus #5--that one i'll never forget).
ESCAPED FROM THE ZOO --
1. What is the only marsupial native to the Americas? The opposum.
2. How many species of tiger could be found in the wild up until approximately 50 years ago? Eight.
3. How many species of tiger are now extinct? Three. Five are still out there.
4. Where was the newest species of rhinocerous found? If i remember my news reports right, Sumatra was where the newest species of rhino was found.
5. What is a John Doree? It's a fish. (Nobody remembered Ellen Degeneres' role in "Finding Nemo"???)
6. What is the only species of the deer family that does NOT lose its antlers each year? The reindeer.
7. What is the oldest domesticated animal? Evidence for the dog and the sheep dates from about the same time, albeit in different parts of the world. Or so i remember from those infamouse anthropology classes--see bonus #5 for the high point of them.
8. What is the only domesticated animal that originated in the Americas? Llama or Alpaca will work, although it is not quite so prevalent nowadays as ... the Turkey.
9. What is the only "Big Game" animal that has been successfully domesticated ? Two answers hold here. For modern times, the Indian Elephant. For circa 5000 years ago, the Cheetah was domesticated and used as a hunting animal by the Egyptians.
10. What is the fastest animal? What is the fastest mammal? How fast can each travel? Swift and the Peregrine Falcon have each been clocked at over 200 mph in flight. The fastest mammal is the Cheetah again, at around 70 mph.

BONUS -- Oooohhhh, now we get into dangerous territory.
1. How often is a new species identified on Earth? Once per minute (last figure I heard)
2. How often does a species go extinct on Earth? Once per second (again, last figure I heard)
3. What is a buffalo chip? Yes, Lolita got this one. It's a piece of dried bison manure that was used for heating cookstoves in pioneer times in the U.S.
4. What is a Rocky Mountain oyster? She got this one too. It's an amputated bull testicle, served either fried or (buck up boys) raw.
5. What evidence do anthropologists look for in proving that a culture or society uses or has used the horse? Squirrel, I am truly disappointed that you didn't at least try to bribe Breit to get this one. When trying to determine when a culture came into contact with (and presumably started using) the horse, they look to see when people in the culture started wearing (drumroll please) PANTS!!! If there's no pants, the people almost always DON'T ride horses. This also applies for women in the society, but the corellation doesn't happen as often. So Squirrel, if you want a pony, get Ben to pony up pants for the equipment you wear.

OK, here goes nothin'. No Googling, and I'm too lazy to go downstairs and get the books out. :)
1. Public house.
2. 4
3. Providing drinks to thirsty passers-by.
4. Arabic
5. I have no idea. Might depend what country you're in.
6. Again, might depend on the country. Inns in England used to provide accommodation and a change of horses as well as food and drink. I think public houses probably didn't.
7. In the brain of a thirsty and eccentrically creative person somewhere in the world... Where? Hmm. It partly depends on what you count as 'beer' - there's a general definition which allows it to be made out of whatever the local grain product happens to be, which broadens the field a bit - and isn't American Bud notoriously made more out of rice than anything else, or did I dream that? - but if I had to guess I'd go for somewhere which had quite a bit of spare grain early on in history and say Egypt.
8. The Egyptians?
9. One owned by people who think that painting everything black - bar, walls, ceiling etc. - will look cool and attract students. :)
10. No. Different Muslim countries have different rules. I've had a drink in bars in Turkey, Egypt, Dubai and possibly Jordan though that's longer ago and my memory's failing. Maybe it was the beer.
11. Is this 'pubs' as in specifically public houses, or general bars/pubs? Public houses in England have been around since medieval times. Bars of various kinds have been around in different cultures since whenever that culture invented alcohol, I'd guess.
12. Lack of safe water.
13. No idea. Is this an American act?
14. When the people running the pub close the doors at the time when the establishment's supposed to close for the night, but keep serving drinks to the customers left inside. Originally the idea was that once the doors are closed it's no longer open to the public and all you're doing is pouring 'free' drinks for your 'friends'. :)
Oops, I'm being verbose...
