Violet Parr
Violet Parr

Feb-25-2009 03:59

Leopold Parr walked as fast as he possibly could in and around Victoria Station. The young officer had anticipated the arrival of his younger sister with great trepidation. He finally saw her waiting for him in a mauve overcoat and a large purple hat through the window of one of the station’s waiting rooms.

When Miss Violet Parr got up and walked out of the waiting room, Leopold’s walk turned into a sprint as he finally reached Violet and hugged her tightly in a collision of joy.

Violet pushed hard against his force not to fall on her back. She kissed him on the cheek and whispered. “Really Leopold, this show of affection can do with some self-restraint!”

“Two years in France…” Leopold replied, “…haven’t changed you a bit!”

“I know better than to let the French freely mold me to their pleasing!” Violet Parr huffed in a mock of indignation. Then she turned her gaze to a young girl standing next to her looking curiously and cautiously at Leopold. “…but I am afraid I can’t say the same about young Isabella.”

Leopold looked at his young niece in utter astonishment: Isabella was a pretty little thing with curiously mixed features. At such a young age, her skin looked like a yellowish tanned shade of ivory. She had long light brown hair, hazel eyes and a serious look of disapproval on her face.

Joey "Bulldog" Bane

He stood there listening and trying to think fast. His eyes sparkled and a short shade of a smile glanced over his mouth. He waited until the man reached a position in front of the crate, and then strongly pushed it from the behind. Startled, the chump dropped his pistol and tried to struggle with it, but in the end its weight was too much for him. A strong moan of pain came out of his mouth as the box was crashing his feet and waist.

As the crate was falling down, Bane used it as a cover, managing to switch his position inside the cabin onto the opposite side, grabbing the shotgun on his way. He jumped over the man’s torso, now sticking out from under the box and glued himself onto the wall right near the entrance opening.

The moment he attempted to take a look outside, ‘little boss’ opened fire again. His shots were aimless, and thus one of them managed to turn into a stray, hitting the chump under the box straight in the head, finally putting him out of his misery.

“Com’ out, American! Yo’ RAT! Com’ out yo’ bastard, or I’mma gonna waste th’ gal, yo’ hea’ me!?!”

Bane was now facing a moral dilemma. If he would try to take a shot, no matter if his aim was high or low, the shotgun’s splints would hit Victoria for sure. Yet lowering his gun and stepping outside would be nothing but pure suicide. It was all clear: him or the little child. If he was to die, they probably would still keep her alive in the hope of finding her also a customer.

Bane spent a good bunch of seconds considering his situation…thinking if he actually wanted to save the girl, or only his own skin, as always. He thought about Violet…she was no more than a beautiful dame. He thought then about her as a mother. Again…no feelings whatsoever. He finally thought of Victoria…

“Wha’tcyo’ waitin’ fo’, American?”

The ‘little boss’ was getting anxious. Bane heard him as he armed his gun again. He had to make his move now, whatever it would be...

At this point Bane decided to finally cross the final line in his road to perdition: he decided to take the shot…

He squeezed his lips, straightened his body, got a good grip on the weapon handle and armed it. Just as he was ready to jump out bursting, he heard the house door open.

“What the hell is happening here?” It was ‘spectacles man’s voice.

“Th’ American! He’s killed Jeff AND Donovan!”

“Damn stupid English apes! Just kill him and be done with it! We’re waiting in the car. Bring the girl. I think we have a client for her too.”

“Alrigh’ Bergen!”

“DAMN! I told you NOT to spell my name…EVER! You fool! Now she has heard it too! Damn…this is getting too risky...”

He took a short break, apparently thinking and then concluded into a cold voice:

“Kill them both. Get out of here after that…we’ll meet up later. We still need to snatch the other one. Find some better chumps this time.”

With this he left slamming the door behind him.

Bane couldn’t see the ‘little boss’s grin, but he could actually feel it in his voice.

“Yo’ hea’d that, RAT? Well no’…I think I’m gonna sta’t wit’ little missy he’re…”

Bane closed his eyes awaiting for the shot. Instead he heard a sturdy noise of quick steps and…a growl!

“Pierre…” he mouthed.

“Wha’ t’e…!?!”

That was the last thing ‘little boss’ had said. A dreadful sound followed and then Bane heard his body falling on the floor. He stepped out of the cabin to see indeed Pierre over the man, shaking his head in rage, having his teeth deep stuck into his throat. Victoria had fallen on the deck somewhere besides them and she was watching the whole scene with…curiosity?

Bane walked up slowly towards the man, watching his life draining slowly out of his body as Pierre’s bite got deeper and deeper. He stopped right near them and waited a few seconds before taking a shot into the air to make the dog unclench his grip.

Upon letting go of the man, Pierre walked right near Victoria and sat by her.

Bane stepped over the dying man’s chest and looked straight into his eyes. It seemed somehow as if he was regaling himself with watching ‘little boss’ in agony. He armed the second bullet in his shotgun and aimed slowly towards his head.

“This…is for showing me who I am…”

As the last word came out of his mouth, Bane squeezed the trigger. Didn’t even blink. The blood splattered around onto everything, leaving the man’s corpse practically faceless. Bane just stood there still looking at him.

Upon a few minutes of staring, Joey finally managed to snap out of it. He turned his eyes towards Victoria. He stepped in front of her and lowered his face to her level. Although she had just witnessed what probably were the most violent events that ever happened in her fragile life, she didn’t seem to mind. Her face was absolutely calm as she was slowly caressing Pierre’s head.

“Tough cookie…” mumbled Bane “…She takes after her mother.”

He gently reached her chin and lifted her face up to him.

She smiled and said again what she had said before: “Father…”

“Ok…” Bane smiled himself. “I’ll take you to your father. But until then…we’ll need to play a little ‘hide and seek’, ok?”

She giggled…and repeated after him: “Hide and seek…”

Bane lifted her into his arms and took a look around. He figured that using the boat would not be safe now, after all that happened. He thus decided to go through the house, considering ‘spectacles man’ to be already gone.

Indeed the house was empty. He walked towards the front door holding her and followed closely by Pierre.

Just as he was a couple of steps from the exit, he heard a burning noise that made him turn around. “What the…?”

Apparently ‘spectacles man’, or Bergen as the dead man had called him, decided to cover his tracks…all of them. Bane froze at the sight of a bunch of dynamite sticks just about to blow. With a last instinctual gesture of protection he turned his back towards the danger and hugged Victoria, covering her with his body.

He felt the glass cutting his face as he was thrown right through a window and then…nothing. Just dark.

*about half an hour later…*

The man opened his eyes slowly. His sight was blurry, yet he managed to realize that he was looking at the sky. And it was night. He blinked a couple of times to clear his vision and then attempted to get up. His whole body was aching. He felt something wet trickling on his cheek. He wiped it off, noticing it was blood…nixed with some small pieces of glass.

A smell of smoke made him aware there was something wrong. He sat and took a look around. He noticed thus he had been lying down right at the entrance of a burning house. He watched the flames play for a moment, then his attention was suddenly drawn by someone right beside him: a little girl, patting the head of a large dog who sat by her just as a lam.

At that moment reality stroke him: the man realized he had no recollection of what had happened…no recollection about anything for that matter…He scouted furiously through his brain, but in the end came up with nothing. He didn’t know who he was, he didn’t know what he was doing there and he didn’t know who the girl and the dog were either. His mind was completely blank.

At that point the little girl turned her small face to him, probably realizing he was up. She smiled…and said a single word: “Father…”

“What?” mumbled the man startled. “Father? Do you mean I’m your father, little girl?” He lifted his hand to his head and shook it hard…to no avail, unfortunately.

“What is your name, little girl?” he asked. “What is…my name in fact?”

She looked at him and chucked. Yet she didn’t answer and pointed her eyes back to the dog.

Driven by a strange instinct that seemed in some way natural, the man started to search his pockets. He finally took out a paper…an ID. “Oh good…” he grumbled and then read it: “McCabe…Michael McCabe…” No picture was attached. ‘Funny…’ he thought ‘…somehow I don’t feel Irish…’

His thoughts were then suddenly interrupted by the sound of a police siren approaching. He quickly analyzed his situation: he was sitting outside a burning house that actually appeared to have been blown up and…there was a small shotgun somewhere close to him. He realized he didn’t have an explanation for the cops, no matter what had gone down there. He turned towards the little girl and placed his hand onto her shoulder.

“Hey, kid, what happened here…can you tell me?”

The girl turned back her eyes towards him and said some more words…somehow automatic: “Hide and seek…”

The man pondered his thoughts a bit trying to make some sense out of her words and then…for some reason decided to take them as some kind of advice. His gut also told him to split.

“Well, kid…I have the strangest feeling that waiting for the cops to come won’t do us any good. We’ll figure out later this whole thing. For now…we have to go. Come!”

He stood up quickly, grabbed the girl and paced up somewhere in the shadows, with the dog following him close. He took a look behind just before rounding a corner and noticed that two cars arrived: a police vehicle and another one that carried some civilians.

“I got to get to the bottom of this…” he mumbled and then he turned his eyes onto the little girl. Again, she smiled. He smiled back. “I guess we’re headed now for a whole new adventure, kid!”

With that he put the girl down, grabbed her hand and all three disappeared fast in London’s labyrinth of streets.

* Back to mid-night *

Garrett and Zeo searched everywhere for landmarks relating to cannons, when they came across the Cannon Street Bridge. They looked at each other. "May be this is it?" Zeo said. Garrett turned left onto the bridge, almost hitting a car coming from the opposite direction, again.

"Damn British road system!" Garrett said.

Zeo looked out from the window, and saw two people by the riverbank near the dock. He pointed them out to Garrett. "That guy over there looks like Bergen, but I can't be sure this far away. As Garrett drove closer the riverbank, Zeo noticed a bunch of people getting on a boat. "Clift, I think they're holding a child on deck, and yes, that's definitely Bergen." Zeo cocked his gun by habit, but decided to be extra careful in the presence of a small child.

The two got out of the car and headed for the pier where boat was docked beside an old house. Zeo recognized Bain from the afternoon. He was on the boat with Bergen, who was looking a small girl. Garrett suddenly swore under his breath and started to run. Zeo followed, wondering what had just happened.

When Garrett was about to shoot, Zeo stopped him in fear of hurting the innocent girl. "That's my daughter they're holding!" Garrett bellowed as the group fired upon them. Zeo jumped on Garrett forcing him out of the gunfire, as the boat sped away.

The two returned to the car immediately and continued to search along the riverbank. After what seemed like an eternity, Zeo spotted a black Buick with Bergen in it. Garret carefully followed the Buick, which stopped at a quiet street. "Damn! This is where Violet lives, what are they up to now?" Garrett said. Bergen and Stinger got off, but no little girl was with them.

Quietly the two followed the criminals on foot until they reached the door. Zeo aimed and shot Bergen in the arm. Stinger returned fire with her tommy gun, Garrett and Zeo dodged behind some cars. Zeo crawled underneath a car and aimed at Stinger's leg. It was a hit. The women fell, still firing bullets into the sky. Garrett then shot Stinger in the head, bulls eye. Just then, an elegant lady in a purple nightgown ran out and saw us.

"Clift! Our daughter is missing!" The lady was in shock.

Bergen jumped out and grabbed the lady, pointing a gun at her temple. "Nobody moves!" He bellowed, then he spoke softly to the lady, "Now, Ms. Violet, take me to your other daughter." The lady took his hand and flipped Bergen over like an omelet. Both Garrett and Zeo pointed their guns at him.

"You’re messing with the wrong woman!" Garrett smirked, then he turned deadly, "Now, where are you hiding Victoria?"

Bergen finally gave in after harsh interrogations too gory to be described. Mak promised to watch the other kids with her life while Violet, Clift and Joseph ‘escorted’ Bergen back to his hide out.

When they arrived with police back up, the house was already burning. After the fire settled down, they found burnt bodies; most goons have died, but to everyone's relieve, there was no child's body amongst the corpses.

The cops searched for Victoria for days to no avail. Garrett held a silent grudge against Zeo for deterring him from saving his daughter, but at the same time was grateful for his help in stopping Bergen from taking Isabella. His feeling was mixed. Zeo decided to return Gregory's body to his family in New York. Leopold and Clift bid Joseph farewell in silence.

As Joseph stood on the dock of the ocean liner, watching England disappeared in the horizon, he was sadden by the fact that in his line of work, sudden death was inevitable on either side of the ocean. He stubbed out his cigarette and returned to his cabin.

Meanwhile, back at Violet's apartment, Makensie told Isabella and Cody to go play, while she gathered her thoughts about poor Victoria.

This wasn't like her to sit back in the shadows, being a babysitter, she WAS an experienced detective after all, but, this particular time, she figured it was the best thing. For the time being, anyway.

"Oh, why haven't I received any word!", Makensie said, with worry.

Cody walks up, tugging on her shirt tail, saying, "Mommy, I have to go to the bathroom"

"Well go to the bathroom, Cody", she said, with impatience that wasn't intended.

She sighed, smiled, then took him to the bathroom. He still felt shy being here, and felt he had to ask to do anything.

After Cody went restroom, he ran off to continue playing with Isabella.

Makensie was in thought, as a knock came to the door.

Frowning, she wondered, 'Who could this be?' Walking to the door, she opened to find her dear friend,Ms Cevasco standing there.

"Well, Ms Cevasco, dear, what are you doing here?", Makensie said, with surprise.

She rolled her eyes, and said, "I heard all what was going on, and I just know how you are when it comes to emergency situations, so, it is Ms C to the rescue. Again"

Makensie chuckles, and said, "Thank you very much, but, ummm, how did you know all what was going on here, with Victoria?"

Walking past her, Ms Cevaso said, "News travels fast around here. Some gentleman told me, although, I don't quite know why. At any rate, I'm glad he did. Now, I am here, and you can do whatever it is you need to do"

Makensie hugged her friend, and said, "Thank you, Ms C! You are such a dear"

"I know, I know...I'm told that all the time. Now get out of here. Please!", she said, laughing.

Makensie went to give Cody a kiss, and a hug and explained that Ms Cevasco was here to watch over them.

"Yayyyy! Ms Cevasco!!", he said, happily.

She smiled, and also gave Isabella a kiss on the forehead, as she walked out.

As she walked to the door, she turned to Ms Cevasco with seriousness.

"Ms C, this is very important. You MUST watch Cody, and Isabella VERY closely. Protect them with everything you have in you. It is a very crucial time, right now. not let them out of your sight. Do not let them outside this apartment. No matter what....and lock this door, and keep it locked", Makensie said.

Ms Cevasco put her hands on her hips, and said, "Makensie Brewer. Just who do you think I am? I may not be in the detective business anymore, and solving cases, but, I am still one tough cookie, and you have nothing to worry about. I have a little friend in my pocket, that I have no problem using if I need to" She showed her a gun, tucked in the waistband of her pants.

She continued on, "Now, you go do whatever you have to do, with the confidence in knowing that your son, as always, is in great hands, as well as Isabella. God forbid something happens, I will shoot first, ask questions later"

Makensie smiles, saying, "I know that you will protect them with your life. I'm just nervous right now is all."

Giving her dear friend/roommate a hug, she stepped out, heading to the docks.

Her intentions weren't to get deeply involved in this, or go off in search, as she felt that since Clift and Violet were doing that, it was best that she stay close to Isabella and Cody. It wouldn't do any good for them ALL to be gone. She just needed to see with her own eyes, what was going on, and more details than what she was getting, then she would return back to her son, and Isabella...and Ms C.

With a quick, brisk walk, she lit up a cigarette, a bad habit she picked up as of late, and headed to the docks.
