This thread is for ideas, suggestions, proposals, etc. NO idea is too silly to mention :) although some might be too impractical to implement.

As possibilities become probabilities, I will create another thread for the Con itself and concrete facts/decisions/information.

Additionally if it was in Seattle I could probably find some, "host houses," for people who find the costs of hotels a rip off. (Which I do after having worked in them for a few years, that's my biggest problem with conventions in general is the cost of the hotel room - maybe this is something to consider in general, having host families - but maybe that sounds crazy to people.)

::smiles:: I realize that the cost of hotels is prohibitive, especially to some. Which is why you negotiate a group rate for the convention. We received a discounted price on the rooms of $31 per night. I won't go into my personal complaints with the place we stayed in since I'm the one who arranged it, but I was personally not impressed.

The reason for setting the first SleuthCon on the East coast was to make it that little bit closer for any of our European friends who might possibly consider going to the expense of attending. I realize it is especially prohibitive cost wise when you add in crossing the 'Pond'. My only suggestion there would be for our European members to have their own. Which I would love to attend, had I the wherewithall.

My personal vote is to tie SleuthCon in with GenCon. This would be the most advantageous for Sleuth itself as well as giving us all a variety of genres to check out while we're there. I will say this as well. IF we do this... rooms are a premium and we need to get a concensus NOW and start booking lodging. AND perhaps we could get a certain author to join in the fun :D

my vote aside... Should the general concensus be for the West Coast, I will organize it in Portland, OR. That's the only major city with an airport in the state, and it's only 1.5 hours away from me. There are also LOTS of hotel choices, tho I would again make convention arrangements with a hotel near the airport such as the Sheraton. They do have a very nice facility and the costs aren't too prohibitive, tho summer rates are more premium.

Should it be for Mid-West, I was sent a link for a town in Ohio that would be a wonderful setting, tho I've not checked out the transportation aspects of going there. I don't have the link on this 'puter, so I'll post it as soon as I can or John can post it here himself :D

Again... my vote is to tie this in with GenCon as we kill two birds with one stone... we promote our favorite game and help Ben AND we get to meet and have a great time together.

I would add in a vote for GenCon for two reasons:

Ease of access for everyone and very low cost for attending.

Indy is easy to get to from anywhere, centrally located, etc. Cost could be about $25-50 per person for entrance to the Con and attending a full days worth of Sleuth events. (of course exact numbers will take a while to hammer out)

For those who do not know this is the largest gaming convention in the Western Hemisphere (one in Europe still is bigger). 2007 is the 40th year of the convention, they have this down to an art now. There are events for all sorts of people, from painting contests, costume contests, roleplaying games, computer games, board games, a dealer room with over 1,000 different vendors, the list goes on and on.

As Rhie mentioned this would also bring Sleuth to a wider audience, over 10,000 people attending. With Sleuth: Noir and Sleuth: City of Adventure both to show off and tutorials to teach the number of players for both could really jump.

We are still looking at alternatives, pairing up with an existing Con looks to solve most of the cost factor. If anyone knows of another Mystery convention for us to look into please mention it.

I need advance notice to take off from work, so once you decide when and where, I can request leave, then arrange from transportation, etc. St Louis or Kansas City might be a good Middle of the US to have one!!!! I really wanted to go this year. Sorry

I like the GenCon idea but wonder about the availability of hotels.

But I'm usually a beer half empty kinda guy.

One reason to piggy back on a larger convention like the two mentioned is because we would get a better rate on hotels, and in the case of Gen Con the convention people handle the reservation for you.

Long before any actual date we will make sure everyone know dates and how to handle those sorts of issues.

Found a cool con to hook up with, too bad it is in Anchorage Alaska. Just about as far from Orlando as you can get though.

Someone a while ago mentioed simultaneous East and West coast events with video conferencing and some clever think to link the 2 together. Will isn't this possible with multiple venues so we could have a UK event and others as well? Not being funny but I don't even own a passport and can't afford the trip over the pond with tickets and hotel costs to follow. If this is ever a yes a vote ought to be held with country members to find a good spot for it, for example most sensible conventions I've been to avoid London at all costs lol!

heheh... I've been looking for an excuse to travel north :) Would love to do that Con in Anchorage lol ::grins:: C'mon, Ran... you know you just need a little excuse to visit alaska again! I on the other hand will be trying to become extremely frugal so I can have the funds to go where ever our next Con will be. :)

Where ever it will be, a joint event with Europe could be a distinct possibility. It would just need someone to step up and volunteer to organize it. Organizing one on the East Coast from the West Coast would have been much more difficult without Whatsyourname in Orlando to help me. I can't even begin to imagine the logistical difficulties of organizing one in Europe from here. So, if there is a volunteer from across the Pond, we can work on figuring out the video conferencing aspect of it.

Keep the ideas coming... I'd like to keep this thread fairly alive for the next year :)

I plan on attending next year. I would like a convention of our own though. I think piggie backing off a larger convention will be harder to get together.
