WARNING GAME SPOILER!!

If you wish to enjoy the adventure of figuring out this game on your own, DO NOT read the rest of this post.

If you are too lazy to read through a page or two of threads to see if your question has already been asked a zillion times, then PLEASE read this first!

Welcome to Sleuth, and your new addiction.  There is no cure, so just accept it and enjoy it! Here are a few tips and hints that you should find helpful, and are among the FAQ of the newbie boards.

First, a great place to FIND ANSWERS and cool history threads about Sleuth is in the Moderator Picks Board. The Mods have picked out their favorite bits and made them easy to find. In addition to personal favorites, try looking over the Newbie FAQ. This can be found on the bottom of most pages as a tiny little grey link. Also the Help file at the upper right of most screens is packed with little useful tidbits.

HOW DO I SOLVE a case? First off…we recommend that you try the tutorial found on the front of the case page. It won’t count against your daily caseload, and it will give you an idea of how the game works. It’s not set up to walk you through the most efficient course through the game, but to show you how the game works, leaving you to find your own strategy. The following formulas will help you find your murderer.

PE+Fake/"none of your business" Alibi=guilty
WE+Fake/"none of your business" Alibi=guilty
2 WE = guilty

PE=Physical Evidence WE=Witness Evidence

Having a clammed suspect that will not give you an alibi is not the same as a fake/none alibi.

PE+WE DOES NOT = Guilty

HOW DO THESE SKILLS WORK?
(Thanks Duke and Ran)

LOCKING PICKING:
When you encounter a locked door while interviewing suspects you can pick the lock and get one question (motive or alibi) answered by exploring their house. Very useful and is the first faction skill I would recomend any newbie get. (LED: YEEEEHAAAAAA!!!!)

STRESS DETECTION:
Automatically gives you an extra blurb saying that the person you are talking too will need persusation to answer more questions, or will only answer one more question, etc. Is useful for newer detectives or to help judge when a suspect is going to clam up. In some people's opinion is not a worth while skill becuase you can easily learn the pattern of when a suspect or townie will clam up after doing a few cases at a particular level.

LED: HOWEVER, unless you're Detective automatically has Stress Detection, it's may be a skill that you REALLY REGRET later. It's a lot of points to use on a skill early on when other skills will actually UNCLAM people. Which, as Ben once stated was the most useful thing.

As Ran states, you'll soon learn how many questions you can ask.
As he also states, they're more the advanced detective, (by which stage, Stress Detection is pretty REDUNDANT) therefore as a young detective you go for your set of Crime Scene (Smarts) and Interview Skills (Tough or Charming).-Reading the start of the Welcome Newbie's post will give you more information about this.

HYPNOTISM:
Automatically attempted every time you talk to a suspect about motive. Sometimes works sometimes does not. Can give you an extra suspect or two every case or so. Works better with CHARMING gear. (LED: I love this skill! Especially for AIs and I think it's under-rated)

SURVEILLANCE:
You can use this on a clammed suspect to try and find some dirt on them. Will unclam then so you can ask more questions. Does not work all the time, based on the gear you are wearing. In my opinion is not for detectives who do not ALREADY HAVE MOST of the other faction SKILLS.

(Ooopss. Locking picking is NOT a faction skill, sorry for not correcting :(

and unless *your Detective automatically ... )

Add to SURVEILLANCE: Wearing smart gear helps.

Rasputin stirs from his place by the fire, sniffs the air, and whines plaintively at his master. Secret_Squirrel glances out through the rain-flecked window of his study and knows instinctively that somewhere out there, in the gritty streets that make up Sleuthville, a tortured soul screams silently in despair.

[bump] ;)

kymkatt: get thee to the bank.

*stares at Squirrel's post wondering whether Rasputin is named for a certain Indigo Girls song*

A quick question: does Lock Picking work all the time, or can it fail (and is it affected by Toughness mod)?

*glances up briefly from the window*

...and no, your gear does not affect lockpicking.

*brings her knees up to her bound chest and resumes her rocking*
