Can someone explain the relationship, if any, between exp awarded and difficulty of case/solve time/evidence collected-verified/any other factors?

well, exp doubles with every level

20 for easy
40 for intermediate
80 for hard
160 for really hard
320 for really really hard
640 for Incredibly
1280 for Stupendous
2540 for Ridic
5000 (I think) for Almosts

As for the rest, some people consider that spoilerish, but i am sure there are threads around that might give some hints

As I don't possess many skills at the moment, I'm only attempting HARD level cases right now, and I only recieve 1 skill point for solving them. Do you get more points for higher level cases?

Skill points are awarded by some formula that I don't know. What I do know is that the more experience points you have, the more it takes to get a new skill point. So in the beginning, it is possible to get say, 4 skill points from one case, if it is the hardest level you can open. But agents with greater experience find their skill points come with decreasing frequency, so that it takes several almost impossible cases to earn a skill point. So right now, you are getting one skill point per hard case, whereas not too long from now, it will take more than one hard level case to get a skill point. The experience points you earn from each specific level of case does not change, but the skill points do, therefore.

To prove the complete confusion even further, one of my detectives has amassed 8 points while the other has only 4, both are head to head on experience points (as a matter of fact, the one with 4 has slightly less).

Have they done the same levels of cases, or the same number of cases? Or have they amassed the same points differently from each other? That might give us a clue on this!

Both doing AI cases, they are doing pretty much the same amount of cases, I pass cases between them to utilize contacts. The one with less exp (and less skill points) is slightly older than the one with more. The are identical detectives with a few slight differences as in age, and total amassed exp points. Let me get the exact figures.

Ok the agents are the same age actually, 84 days.
Gena has 267,920 exp points, 5 skill pts and has solved 385 cases.
Steve has 298,600 exp points, 9 skill pts, and has solved 351 cases.
They both had 0 skill points and Steve has amassed skill points at almost double the rate as Gena. I have always kept them playing at similar levels though there was a time of about 1 week a month or so ago when Steve had a PE contact and Gena didn't so he was doing rid.hard and she was doing incred.
But since I have started measuring them against each other, they have both done AI.

Gena - are you comparing the total skill points or the skill points they have to spend? 5 skill points sounds really really low for a 200K plus detective.
