<Jake Fenton slammed the door lazily behind him and poured himself a bourbon. No ice. Rather too casually, he slung his jacket and shoulder holster down on the cot in the corner of the room, and slumped tiredly into his chair.

Almost by instinct, he reached to the breast pocket of his shirt and brought a cigar up to his mouth. He chewed off the ends and spat them onto the floor, where the detritus of the last few busy days had been building. What the heck, it was somewhere to lay his head.

His expert fingers flipped the zippo alight, and casually tossed it in the air to light the cigar, before catching and closing it in one movement. He took a sip of the burning liquor, and turned to gaze out of the window at the rain-sodden streets, below. The streets teemed with people, covering their heads with newspaper as they scurry their way home to their wives or off to their mistresses. He found himself idly wondering who they all are, what they all do... What makes them tick...

He liked this city. Lots of places to be seen and even more places to hide in. The gritty underpinnings rubbed him the wrong way sometimes, but "sandpaper smooths the plank" grandpa used to say.

Wandering down the street contemplating his future he notices the so stereotypical stooges from La Cosa. Bulls in a china shop, anyone with half an eye open could see them coming a country mile. But that didn't mean he needed to let them see him. A quick duck into the bookstore, casual browse of the historical fiction. He chuckled to himself, most of what people called history these days was the fiction the factions like the Brotherhood fed to the newsies.

He watches out the window as they enter an apartment building. Pondering, is this what I want to spend my time on? Watching small time thugs shake down petty criminals for a few pennies? He had been in town for just over a week. Found a few jobs, been steered to a few more. So far a tidy bit of cash, a handful of favors, and a chance to sharpen his skills. This might have been the place to come to build up quickly, but did he really want to stick around this city? There were a lot more exciting places out there, places that involved the sun and beach.

That was a good thought; New Orleans might be a nice change of pace. Lots of sun, good food, great music. No weather problems to speak of, must be better than this dirty city.

Just as he steps over to the travel section to grab a book on the Big Easy he notices the goons from La Cosa coming out of the apartment doorway. The one looked like he was carrying a package of some sort over his shoulder. But the look the third one gave up and down the street told him that there was more in that package than a rolled up Persian rug.

Quietly slipping out into the street he followed quietly behind to see where they were going. Maybe a quick big score of a case was what he needed to head south for good.

(ooc hope for the best for those in the effected areas)

"Mph, hmph!", mumbled Giry from under the rug's layers. How does she get herself into these things? "Hey, hold on guys!", cries Jake. "Finally," thought Giry...

*laughs as she walks in, goes up to the bartenser ans asks for a Red Bull and Vodka. "Here's $1000, put in on the bar. Drinks for anyone." Strolls up to Jukebox which is hidden discreetly in the corner. Turns up Violent Femmes 'Blister in the Sun' and starts dancing.*

<Sunday morning. I was on my way to the church to pay my regards to the priest. I ain't ever been a churchgoer, but Manfred

was a genuinely good man. His orphanage had helped get a lot of kids off the street. Shame there weren't more like him

around. But I'm being sidetracked - which was just what happened to me that day.

As I rounded the corner onto 54th there was a ruckus going on. A couple of goons were struggling with a lively looking roll

of carpet. Yep, that big ol' Persian rug was struggling real good, and I was damned sure it weren't no magic doing it. Now I

ain't stupid, I know not to get involved with a couple of thugs going about their work... If there's any money in it I'll get

the info from the other prople in that tenement. But it was Sunday and I like to hedge my bets. I reached them just as they

got down the steps onto the sidewalk.>

"Hey, hold on guys, you ain't making me watch a kidnapping..."

They walked away from me, the little guy at the front was facing me. "Shove off." He barked back at me. These fellas weren't

to be reasoned with. I cracked the big guy in the back of his head with my dusters. He was unconscious before he hit the

ground. Good thing the carpet was pretty heavy and stiff, that coulda hurt too. But I didn't have time to worry too much. The

other one had dropped the carpet and drawn a knife on me. He was swarthy looking, and his thick bushy eyebrows seemed to move

independantly.>

"So, you'll pull a knife on me will ya, shorty? Now I've knocked out your buddy here..." Jake growled, and nudged the fallen hood with the toe of his boot as he squared up to the little guy. "Besides, who's gonna help you with the rug now? Think about it," he continued as he thumped his knuckle duster into the palm of his left hand, "Fatso's down, and it ain't gonna be

me next, see?...". The ugly guy had no choice he knew he was beat and he got on his toes. "Small timers," Jake muttered, then turned round and looked at the slightly wriggling roll of carpet.

He reached down and grabbed hold of the fringe of the rug with both hands, and in the finest Hollywood manner he rolled the carpet open with a theatrical flourish. What he discovered shocked even him.

"You?!" He caught his breath. Torn between anger, sympathy and curiosity, he bent down and offered her his hand to help Danniella Giry to her feet. "You know I oughtta wrap you right up in that rug and go on my way?"

Watching the show of pugalism from the other side of the street his lips tightened as his first observations where comfirmed, two wanna-be goons, frightened off that easily.

His eyebrow raised as the rug unrolled and Giry tumbles out into the street. Watching the two of then hold hands, something was going on between the two of them.

Then he quietly crossed the street to pick up that switchblade that the goon had dropped and walked to the cafe window, looking at the specials. Keeping an ear on the conversation near by.

She was cute, but worth the trouble to kidnap? Something else was going on with this dame, and her knight in ragged clothes looked like he had a story too.

"Get the hell away from me!", she screamed. "If I knew you were my savior, than I'd rather be tortured at the Real Estate Agency!" "Excuse me?!? I just saved you!" "You know what, ya didn't. I was just fine on my own here. Then you come along all high and mighty. So do me a favor and leave me alone!" "Uh-uh", he grunted, "you ain't going nowhere." "I am not a force to be reckoned with." She pulled out her right fist, with the brass knuckles on it. "I exchanged the suitcase and magnifying glass for it. It suits me more, doncha think?" And with that she slapped him, and haughtily went away. "Excuse me miss, is something the matter?", asked R. Anstett. "Yes actually. That man over there," she pointed to Fenton, "has singlehandedly ruined my life. I would appreciate it if you gave him my best regards." And she vanished, if only for awhile...

He walked over to Fenton, sized him up. Then smiled, Dames; can't live with 'em....

Then out of the corner of my eye I caught a flash of blue heading down to the docks.

Well my good man, this has been fun, but it looks like the bird I am after is about to fly away. Better luck next time.

He slipped down the street to quickly jump on just as the doors were about to close. Clapping the steward on the shoulder, here is my ticket he said as he slipped a small envelope into the stewards pocket. With a quick nod we parted company.

Looking up and down the row, now where did she go? and just were is this thing headed in the second place?

It was good to be back in New York, even though danger still lurked everywhere, at least I was home with friends, and my spouse whom I missed a lot.

After the ship docked I got my suitcase and purse and headed off the ship, when a woman came rushing by me and knocked me into this man sitting nearby. I was carrying my peral handled dagger which stabbed him in the leg.The man was bleeding like a stuck pig, so I cried out, "Is there a doctor on board?" Thankfully there was and he administered treatment to stop the bleeding. The man laughed and told me not to worry about it, that it was only a flesh wound. Anyway,I insisted on buying him a new suit and paying the doctor, which he was greatful for. As I headed down the peer to shore I saw the woman who pushed me into the man. I thought "What in the world is she doing out here and not on the ship?" As she rushed by me, I grabbed her by the arm and stopped her in her tracks. "Where are you going in such a rush", I asked, and did you know you caused me to stab a man on the ship awhile ago?" She told me her name was Madam Giry, and that she was trying to get away from a detective she had met earlier and didn't want him to see her board the ship, that his name was R.Anstett." She continued to say she had heard of me and that I was one of the older sleuths in New York. I wasn't sure if I liked the "Older part",hehe, but I knew she meant no harm. After Madam & I talked we made an arrangement to have lunch then we both went out separate ways.As I walked briskly back to the office, the rain stung my face as it peppered down. I couldn't help but laugh at the people carrying news papers over their heads fir they looked like ghost running in the rain with wet paper molded to their heads.I reached our office and saw "Detective Jake Fenton's sign on the bldg.,& wondered what he was like. Since it was late I'd meet him tomorrow. Right now I was tired & missed my man...texan, so I beat it to the office. Meanwhile....
