How do YOU Sleuth, I ask? :O Do you memorize alibis, etc., open Notepad, or what? Personally, I open Notepad. It makes the Sleuthing process much easier for me.

I use a spreadsheet like OpenOffice or Excel. I lay it out this way:
Name . . . . . .| Alan | Beth | Carl | more as I get them
Motive . . . . .| Y | | Y |
Records. . . . .| . | Y | . |
Picklock . . . .| | | Y |
Alibi. . . . . .| shoe | xxxx | bar |
Tactic . . . . .| ST | !ST | |
Any Others?. . .| Y | | |
Alibi Valid. . .| ! | xxxx | Y |
footprint. . . .| ! | | Y |
footprint 2. . .| | | |
hair . . . . . .| Y | | |
Alan?. . . . . .| xxxx | | ! |
Carl?. . . . . .| Y | | |

I use Y for Yes and ! for No merely out of habit. Here ST means I used Sweet Talk and !ST means it failed. I stick xxxx in a column to remind me not to ask that question. If someone clams or dies on me I select the column and hit CTRL I to italicize it. If I just busted someones alibi I'll select the column and hit CTRL B to bold it as a reminder. Then when I'm questioning someone else and jotting down facts, I'll see the bold values nearby. That reminds me to ask that person if they suspect the guy I bolded.

The webform just took too long for me, I was Tabbing and SHIFT Tabbing forever. In a spreadsheet you can move in any direction using the arrow keys, or TAB left or right, or ENTER will take you to the first empty column of the next row. If I have to go, I email the file to myself as a XLS or CSV attachment. Once, in a pinch, I couldn't email it because Hotmail was down. So I saved it as a CSV, opened it in Notepad, copied it to the clipboard, clicked the Detective and Edit Bio links, pasted it into my bio, and saved it that way.

I also created an Excel spreadsheet. I patterned it quite similarly to the sleuth helper linked from City Hall, so I certainly want to give creativity credit where it's due. I just customized my version to a few of my preferences, and to NYC...where I do all my cases.

There are drop-down boxes for the repetitious things such as crime scene evidence and most of the suspect information (hair type, RH/LH, build, alibi details and whether a suspect knows something or doesn't).

I have check boxes for which city witnesses have been polled, and to designate which suspects have clammed.

I don't have it on a website, but I'd be happy to share it via email if anyone wants to PM their address to me. I could include instructions on how to fairly easily customize it for other cities...or if details were provided (mainly the specific city witnesses used), I could certainly customize it before sending.

Since this has popped up again I'll just throw in another vote for Quicknote, for anyone using Firefox. It is much better than notepad IMHO--up to 4 tabs, and you can have it as a sidebar and minimize clicking back and forth. I love it!

haha...lacking the confidence to switch to pen, I'm still going amish-style: paper and pencil. I can't stand switching back and forth between windows or tabs or whatever and I like the immediacy of being able to just make notes by hand.

Maybe there should be like a special piece of equipment for the person who kills the most trees while sleuthing :P. You can charm a lot of people with a document shredder. Just saying...

ooh nice thought I would like that I have killed at least a tree a week so far.
