Where I'm from in England, ginger beer and ginger ale are very different drinks (both made with ginger of course). Ginger beer is quite sweet and nice, whereas ginger ale is quite bitter and I don't like it that much : o )

Really have no idea why it's ginger... good guess calalta. Though I'm more inclined to think it's 'cos of Irn bru which is a gingery colour (made from girders don't you know!!)

Isn't Iron Bru the main scottish fizzy/soda/pop/etc. drink? (I've never seen it for sale in Ireland or seen it on english TV) Maybe that's why you call it ginger?

I remember reading in a guide while visiting Edinburgh that Scotland is the only western country that does not have Coca-Cola as its main fizzy drink. Good for Scotland! (even though I can't stand Irn Bru unless it's with whiskey)

I was talking to my wife about this thread, and she said folks in the south (USA), often ask if you want a "cold drink", and they are refering to Coke. I think this goes along with what I had said earlier about "cola" and what Madame TBird is saying about "Coke". All three are generalising "pop" and "soda".

We have a drink called rot gut here in the general area of Ohio. It's basically moonshine or any cheap, nasty tasting store bought liquor. Coke will do wonders for cleaning grease and oil off your cement though!!!

anyone remember ok soda? i don't think it ever expanded through all of the states, but here in colorado you could call this number: 1.800.IFEELOK and listen to testimonies of how people felt okay. ok soda was a nasty tasting drink. i guess that's why it didn't last very long.
