I once was one of those adventure travel tourlead, in Vietnam. The morons...uh I mean customers, I had to take around were mixed Dutch and flemish dutch speaking Belgians. They broke out in a MASSIVE fight, during the goodbye dinner which made me originally go "huh" as well.
One of the dutchies mentioned to the male half of a belgian couple that she "married a good party." This means you married well. However, turns out in Belgian saying the same thing as "you married a prostitute." Being dutch myself, I at first had NO idea what upset the belgians so much. I had to mediate between both parties to figure out what happened. When I found out I had to laugh so hard. Anyway the Belgian couple only reluctantly accepted the apology, but still did not want to share the van to the airport with the other couple.

In Scotland (if you're not too posh) we call it ginger!

How strange! Do you know why it's called ginger!? And why shouldn't you be too posh to call it that!?

My, my, Geddes. I have some family from Scotland, and even now they occassionally say something I don't understand. When I read your post, I immediately asked one of them if they would like a glass of ginger and she said yes please : o ) I have never, ever heard of that and, now that I have, I feel thoroughly edified.

i believe Ginger may come from the most popular soft drink in Scotland at one time, Ginger beer or as we call it in North America Ginger ale :)

Ginger beer and ginger ale are similar, but the "beer" variety is apparently made with fermented ginger giving it a stronger flavor. Good stuff either way.
