For the first time since I aquired this skill, I have found a clump of hair and did not discern if it was curly or straight. Is that normal? Do all skills occasionally fail? My advanced thread analysis has always worked (so far).

This is normal. If you wear gear that is +smart, however, the chance that it will tell you if it is curly or not increases. The same thing will happen with adv. thread, footprint, and note analysis. It is nothing to worry about.
