I'm a tough and smart detective, and so far, i've got

Interrogation
Intimidation
Advanced Interrogation
Intermediate Interrogation

should I get research already? if not, what skills would you recommend?

i'm currently playing at easy to intermediate level.

thanks in advance.

Hmmm. You can do a lot with Interrogation and Intimidation, and I think when I was playing Mop Men I went as far as I could with those toughness skills before I did anything else, and it worked well for me. You would benefit from the higher level Intimidation to use with the townspeople, and I would say that is most important now.

But I would also recommend getting some evidence skills before research, myself, unless you are subscribing and joining an agency (which I also recommend!)

I am sure others will weigh in on this one, too, though.

I would suggest that you need at least one of the basic evidence skills, either thread or hair analysis before research. Then get research when you are ready to step up to hard level. It doesn't help as much at lower levels.

I think you should get some evidence skills as Moonshh and the Mad One have said. Research really does help for the *higher* levels; if it gives you an idea, I'm now on Incrediblies, and it helps, but I could do them without it.

Without evidence skills, though, I'd have given up long ago. The game would be unplayable without them. You'd rely on those terrible clamming witnesses and townspeople, and you'd NEVER solve a case!

Get yourself some smarts: hair, thread, footprint and handwriting. If you can get yourself a physical evidence contact, you won't need the one that corresponds (e.g. if you have a Banker contact, handwriting's not really any help to you), but the rest will be invaluable.

basic thread and hair skills are neede even if you have the barber/tailor as contact. You cant find any hair and thread in scene without them. The advance PE skills can depend on your contact like andrea said. I would also go for high interview skills and PE skills first, then research and lockpicking.

I have a kind of dumb question, but each time I buy a skill that I think will help me solve the cases, the actual case seems to get harder. For example, I bought advanced hair analysis or advanced thread analysis (I forget which one) so now I can find out if certain PEs belong to a man or a woman...etc. Instead of helping, I just got more suspects with false or no alabis that are women... Then I recently got interrogation and rule bending...and once again instead of helping, this led to witnesses and contacts clamming up quicker! Is this normal? It's pretty frustrating

Interesting that you pulled up such an old thread, but actually, I have a feeling you're running into problems because you're gaining more experience, and perhaps trying harder level cases. Acquiring new skills should actually make working cases easier. Another problem you may be facing is by having both tough and charming skills, if you don't have Judge of Character, you may not know when is the best situation to use your tough skills, and when it's best to use charming. Again, I can't be certain exactly what skills you do or don't have, but the above scenario is the whole point for having J.o.C.
Hope this helps a bit! Good luck! ;-)

Although I'm Also Newb >,<, I've been playing for a couple of days, I have to recomment getting Hair and Thread Analysis first. Like what many said above, it's essential to find as much evidence as possible. It narrows your suspects down quite a bit. Before I got the two, I found cases painful. Try for those first. After you've gotten those, then I recommend getting research.

Hello! Can someone please tell me how to spend my skill points? I have some skill points unspent. Furthermore...I can't buy new skills... :(
I looked at the detective page, at skills, but I couldn't find anything that would help me in this "case"!
Thanks!

Can anyone help me decide between advanced rule bending or intermediate sweet talking? :-)
