False Accusation

Aaarrrggh! I just made a false accusation. The guy had given me a false alabi, had left a footprint (the only evidence found) and was suspected by one other suspect. At this point eveyone had clammed, but I had a strong case so I marched right in there and accused him.. and... it wasn't him!!!!
I'll say it again, aaarrrrggh!
Is this normal? Just how much evidence do I need?
N.B. In leu of circumstances (suspect infact being innocent) the local magistrate has insisted I make a public appology:
"I deeply regret my actions that evening. In retrospect I can see I may not have been as polite as I should have been (I'm sure your mother is a fine woman) and it has often been noted that I don't know my own strength (still, no bones broken ehh!) and have subsequently enroled in an anger management course.
Once again Mr M*****, please accept my humble appologies."

when they clam up you can go to the merchants, meaning butcher, waitress, music teacher, fortune teller and bartender and ask if they know anything about the case, very often they will give you a name and you can continue. Also always ask if they know anyone who might commit the crime BEFORE you ask for alibi.

Not true M. Zane, they have gotten tight lipped on me that way too, and then I have no idea if they even have an alibi

Connor, the day will come when you look back on $40,000 with a fond nostalgia....
lmoss, M. Zane is not really wrong, I don't think, although it's true that if all your suspects and all your townspeople clam up on you, you won't get any more suspects.
But make completing your suspect list a priority, and this is less likely to happen. So ask each suspect about others with motives FIRST until your list is complete. If that doesn't work, ask the townspeople if they know anything about the case. Even one new name that you can ask about motives will sometimes salvage a whole case.
