I recently found an awesome party/social game called "The Resistance" that my friends and I love to play. The premise is very similar to games like "mafia" and "werewolf"; you have a group of players, in which some of them are working against the group and have knowledge the others don't.

In "The Resistance", you are basically members of an underground organization known as "The Resistance" attempting to destroy the establishment. However, among you there are counter-agents, or "Imperial Spies" who are working to sabotage your efforts. The spies know who they are, as well as who else is a spy, but will for all intents and purposes appear to be working toward the goals of the Resistance.

The game takes place over a series of 5 "missions". The Resistance is trying to complete 3 missions successfully, while the spies are attempting to sabotage 3 missions. First one to 3 wins.

We've all been working under this assumption that Special K is a spy, and Jason Arends is Resistance. And Jason's weird actions are due to him being cute and confused. I've been re-thinking this for a bit and maybe we jumped the gun on clearing Jason. I think this is more difficult because at least one, perhaps two people who are Resistance, have done strange things which makes it more difficult to understand what is going on. And honestly, Special K's actions make more sense as Resistance than as a spy.

I'll say it again. The two spy scenarios are:
- Jason, Illicit, Molly
- Special K, Illict, Marc

This is based on mission results and unless the spies just wanted to drag this game out and didn't feel like winning the last mission, these are the only possible scenarios. (There are two other scenarios of Special K, Illicit, Jason and Cek, Special K, and Illicit but for my own sanity I am going to rule these out and never think of them again :-) )

OK now everyone open your minds for a minute. And instead of going down the path of Special K is a spy, assume Jason is the spy and look at what has actually happened in missions and voting. Let's review this assuming Special K is actually Resistance....

Mission 1, Team 1 (proposed by Marc)

Molly Maltese
Jason Arends
Special K

Cards given to: OVERHEARD (Illicit), SPOTLIGHT (Danny)

YES votes: Danny Mack, Illicit, Jason Arends, Special_K, Molly Maltese, M. Lacrimosa
NO votes: Nicnic, Cekuray

Mission Result: FAIL (Molly voted SUCCESS publicly, so one of Jason or Special K voted SABOTAGE)

Because we are assuming for these purposes that Marc is not a spy, and he's also a rookie who made rookie mistakes in not taking any of the cards for himself, nor putting himself on the mission, we'll ignore this. The first mission was a bit of a cluster so I'm not going to spend too much time on this, but as of this moment, at least one of Jason or Special K is a spy. And Molly HAD to vote SUCCESS or she would be out of the game.

There is nothing about this that tells us that the spy team can't be Jason, Illicit, and Molly.

Mission 2, Team 1 (proposed by Nic)

Nicnic
Cekuray
Jason Arends
Illicit

Cards given to: NO CONFIDENCE (Nic & Cekuray)

Yes votes: Jason Arends, Nicnic, Cekuray, M. Lacrimosa, Molly Maltese
NO votes: Special_K, Illicit, Danny Mack

Mission Result: SUCCESS

Now looking at these votes, Special K voted AGAINST this mission, as she should have if she knew Jason and Illicit are spies. Illicit voted against it probably to hide her identity and if the mission failed, we pretty much said we would automatically think she is a spy. Or it is quite possible that she is flipping a coin to vote. I know Danny is Resistance because I saw her card and she voted No because she thought she was supposed to.

This mission passed and we later found out there was at least on spy on it. We also all said that if the mission passed, Jason was automatically cleared of suspicion, so this gave Jason and Illicit incentive to vote SUCCESS on the mission. And that could be why both of them did. But Special K's actions here are consistent with what she should have done.

Mission 3, Team 1 (proposed by Molly) - REJECTED
Special_K
Illicit
M. Lacrimosa
Nicnic

Cards given to: STRONG LEADER (Special K & Jason Arends)

Yes votes: M. Lacrimosa, Jason Arends
No votes: Special K, Molly Maltese, Illicit, Cekuray, Danny Mack, Nicnic

For this purpose we are assuming Molly, Jason, and Illicit are spies. Molly gave a special power to at least one spy. Because we know for a fact that at least one of Jason and Special K is a spy. Why in the world would she do that? In addition WTF is that mission proposal? At this point we are all saying Special K is a spy, yet she was on the mission. BUT.... is it possible that Molly made that team, knowing it was going to fail, and that we would all probably blame Special K if it did? Maybe she made a team of three Resistance and one spy, and knowing we all kinda trusted Illicit at this point, the one SABOTAGE would get attributed to Special K. And when Molly was questioned about her bizarre actions, she twirled a lot and blamed it on her not wanting to play linear. But this whole mission was FUBAR. I think in the end, when we all were saying no freaking way were we voting yes on this, Molly voted NO on her own mission to try to make her non-linear playing theory look valid. Illicit had to vote No because she knows the identity of Jason and therefore Special K has to be a spy.

AND WHY IN THE WORLD DID JASON VOTE YES TO THIS MISSION?

There is no explanation for that if he is Resistance, because if he is, he is the ONLY person on the Resistance team that 100% knows for sure that Special K is a spy. And he voted Yes to a mission where there was someone on it that he KNEW was a spy.

Makes no sense. No sense at all. Unless Jason is a spy.

ok nic... I agree with you that the last mission distribution I proposed was voted too easily by the ones we have doubts on them (considering that, as we were thinking the team consisted only of Resistance members, the votes should've been 5-3). We know that Illicit is a spy and we have two possible situations: she told the truth about Jason being resistance (in the case Jason is resistance he would not suspect Illicit) and the second one, she lied, knowing him to be a spy, covering for him. The second option gives us another spy: Jason. But from this point, the hypothesis are too many for this point of the game. I totally agree with you, let's wait a bit and rethink the whole story, see some more mission proposals and decide after that. When I suggested to Molly that she should help us more if she's Resistance( giving her the trust she needed), she immediately resolved to ''help'' us. We all know that she is not such an obbeying girl, so that looks suspicious to me now. Marc always felt a bit upset by the accusations of being a spy, maybe rightly so. I trust you saying that Danny is Resistance, you being resistance and myself ( I take these three names for a fact, as this is the only chance to come faster to a result, not getting mad in all these possibilities).
Special K also seemed suspicious with some of her threads, in one of them admitting she is a spy and admitting she knows the other two names.
Let's wait for the votes of this proposed mission and draw other conclusions which might help us more.
And, finally, please people, keep your votes only to Serges (except Molly, of course), that way keeping everybody on tip-toes( resistance and especially spies). :)

Mission 3, Team 2 (proposed by Special K) - REJECTED

Special_K
Danny Mack
Nicnic
M. Lacrimosa

Yes votes: Special K
No votes: Molly Maltese, Illicit, Cekuray, Danny Mack, Nicnic, M. Lacrimosa, Jason Arends

Everyone voted no on this mission, including the spies. I actually think that this mission may have been made up of all Resistance members. And Special K was 100% right that if this mission failed, she was out of the game because we would think she is a spy. This proposal, however, makes total sense if Special K is Resistance and she KNOWS that Jason and Illicit are spies and that Molly is probably the third.

Mission 3, Team 3 (proposed by Jason Arends)

Nicnic
Cekuray
Jason Arends
Illicit

No votes: Special K
Yes votes: Molly Maltese, Illicit, Cekuray, Danny Mack, Nicnic, M. Lacrimosa, Jason Arends

Mission Result: SABOTAGE (one vote)

Jason was happy to propose this mission. And all the spies were happy to approve it. And there was obviously a spy on it because it failed. Now what I was having a problem wrapping my head around, was the fact that there was only one vote to sabotage. So how likely was it that BOTH Jason and Illicit were spies? BUT I found something last night that I hadn't noticed before. Right after the mission proposal was voted through, Jason posted "Down with the Imperial Dogs!" Was this him just randomly being cute? Or was this "table talk" to let his spy partner know that he was going to vote SUCCESS on the mission and she should vote SABOTAGE?

Are we putting too much into Jason's cute, innocent, confused act?

And Special K voted No on this mission as she should have if she knew Jason and Illicit were spies.

Until this point there is absolutely nothing inconsistent in what Special K is doing, however Jason has certainly made some strange decisions.

Now this one is actually the defining mission and where I think we all may have messed up in our thinking.

Mission 4, Team 1 (proposed by Danny)

Danny Mack
Nicnic
Jason Arends
M. Lacrimosa
Cekuray

No votes: Molly Maltese, Illicit
Yes votes: Danny Mack, Nicnic, Cekuray, M. Lacrimosa, Jason Arends

Mission Result: SUCCESS

Both Molly and Illicit voted No to this mission. This mission did not have two spies on it. I do believe this mission had one spy on it. Special K has been extremely vocal about Jason, Illicit and Molly being the spies. And if she is a spy I highly doubt she would completely try to throw her teammates under the bus (personally I wasn't even really considering Molly until she said something). Molly actually did try to take suspicion away from Jason and Illicit. So since I don't believe that all three of Special K, Illicit, and Molly are spies, there was one spy on this mission and two spies on the bench. Perhaps the two spies who voted against it?

Special K who had voted No to pretty much every mission prior to this, voted Yes to this one when she realized that it needed two spies to sabotage it. And at this point she thought that Jason, Illicit, and Molly were the spies. Everything she is doing is consistent.
