Hello all.
I'm fairly new to Sleuth and I thought I might share a little hobby of mine with you all. Here's something for that sad moment when the mysteries of the day are all done.

Thousands lay up gold within this house,
but no man made it.
Spears past counting guard this house,
but no man wards it.
What is it?

Lightning is correct!

Tines is another work for the prongs in forks and the report is the thunder, (the lightning disappears before the thunder is heard ... unless it's directly overhead)

A new one:

Duncan Drivel hailed a taxi. While being driven to his destination, he started chattering non-stop to the driver. The cabbie realised that Duncan would not shut up, so he resorted to an old taxi drivers trick. He looked in his rear view mirror and said "I am sorry mister, I can't hear a word you are saying. My hearing aid broke down this morning. I am quite deaf even when it is working, but believe me when it is not working I am totally deaf." At his destination, Duncan paid the fare and got out. A few moments later, Duncan realized the cab driver had lied to him about his hearing problem. How did Duncan know the driver was lying?

The driver had heard Duncan to know where to take him. Therefore, his hearing aid must have been working, if he had one. Also, he knew that Duncan was talking, to tell him that he couldn't hear him.

Hmmm ... two possibilities ... is it:

1) Deaf people have difficulty speaking clearly, and this chap's speech seems quite articulated?

or ...

2) He had a radio in the cab for which he got called to job, which obviously he couldn't use if he was deaf.

Agh! I don't know what's happening to my English at the moment ... "for which he gets called to jobs" : o )

Nuts. Not only did LilRach beat me to it, but her answer is much cleverer than mine. I'm going off to sulk ... again! : o (

Lilrach.....correct! YAY! Duncan realized, because the driver did know where to take him.

A math one.

When Sandy Beach was six years old, she hammered a nail in to her favourite tree to mark her height. Ten years later at sweet 16, Sanday returned to see how much higher the nail was. If the tree grew by 5 centimeters each year, how much higher would the nail be?

Would it be the same height because trees grow from the top not the bottom?
