I had a rep with the muckety-mucks who ran La Costra Nostra. I was the best cat-burglar in the business, bar none. I was the reason people locked their doors at night - not that that stopped me, of course. I went where I pleased, took what I pleased, and did with it what I pleased.

Until I broke into the tiny apartment of Officer Michael Mulder, crack shot and confirmed bachelor. I was supposed to steal his service revolver so 'the family' could pin a mob murder on him.

Instead, he stole my heart. And led me away in handcuffs.

Though Mulder had to testify about the break-in at my trial, he told the judge how I never made a move to hurt him. He told the judge how I wanted out of the mob life for good, and how I was willing to name names in La Costra Nostra. Big names.

Mulder's good word and my first (and only) stint as a stoolie led to me serving just six months in the joint. He swore he would write me every day, visit me every Sunday, and be there when I got out so we could start our life together.

He came through on all but that last part.

When I was walking through the iron gates to the gray Studebaker waiting outside, I knew I was completely free of my old life. With the heads of La Costra Nostra in federal prison and my knight in blue polyester waiting for me, I couldn't wait to leave that old me behind.

Then the Studebaker blew itself to smithereens with my knight inside, taking that promise of a happy life up in a gasoline-fueled fireball.

Turns out La Costra Nostra wasn't as dead as I thought - a nephew with no rap sheet had decided to take up the family business, and the first item on the agenda was paying back the stoolie that had sent his uncle up the river.

When a few Mob-supplied C-notes in the right hands persuaded the cops to let Mulder's case go cold, I knew I had to avenge him myself. I decided to start my life over, taking the cases the cops refused to take for fear of angering their 'family' benefactors. It'll take time, but someday I'll work my way up the ladder until the day when I can look into the eyes of the scumbag who ordered the death of the only person who ever cared about me.

And when that day comes, may God have mercy on the scumbag's soul. Because I won't.
