Hello all.
I'm fairly new to Sleuth and I thought I might share a little hobby of mine with you all. Here's something for that sad moment when the mysteries of the day are all done.

Thousands lay up gold within this house,
but no man made it.
Spears past counting guard this house,
but no man wards it.
What is it?

Yay!

I'm sorry if I repost one that's already been mentioned, butI've chosen an obscure one from the Beyond Zork computer game.

"My tines be long
My tines be short
My tines flee ere
My first report."

Not right, Dogberta, but good guess

I had to look "tines" up on the internet, when I first saw it. It still took a bit to solve the puzzle though.

Yeah, lightning sounds like a good guess - if I understood the words right :D - *wanders off to check the dictionary*

Lightning is correct!

Tines is another work for the prongs in forks and the report is the thunder, (the lightning disappears before the thunder is heard ... unless it's directly overhead)

A new one:

Duncan Drivel hailed a taxi. While being driven to his destination, he started chattering non-stop to the driver. The cabbie realised that Duncan would not shut up, so he resorted to an old taxi drivers trick. He looked in his rear view mirror and said "I am sorry mister, I can't hear a word you are saying. My hearing aid broke down this morning. I am quite deaf even when it is working, but believe me when it is not working I am totally deaf." At his destination, Duncan paid the fare and got out. A few moments later, Duncan realized the cab driver had lied to him about his hearing problem. How did Duncan know the driver was lying?

The driver had heard Duncan to know where to take him. Therefore, his hearing aid must have been working, if he had one. Also, he knew that Duncan was talking, to tell him that he couldn't hear him.
