Very interesting article, thank you for sharing it, Ency.
I was amused to see a picture from one of my very favourite Sherlock Holmes movies, 'Without A Clue'. Obviously, it was completely tongue-in-cheek - Michael Caine plays a cheerfully unintelligent drunkard actor hired to play the part of a non-existent Sherlock Holmes... by Ben Kingsley's Dr. Watson, the brains of the outfit. It was Dr. Watson who had solved all the crimes in the stories he wrote, but thanks to the publisher, the character Sherlock Holmes was created - and then all of London wanted to hire him.
It was the most inaccurate portrayal of Holmes ever done; then again, it was a parody.

For those of you who have not yet seen the movie, nor read any of the stories, I should go ahead and tell you that you should read the short story A Scandal in Bohemia before you see the movie. Irene Adler is a character in the movie and if you haven't read that story then you will have no clue how she and Sherlock Holmes know each other.
