Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock.

I glanced up at the large clock again. Each tick and each tock drove my mind farther back into the past. A past I had left behind ten long years before. A past I was facing now.

But first came the waiting. I hate waiting.

I glanced around the station again. Deserted. Not a soul in sight. Strange, considering that this used to be a bustling train station ten years ago. I pulled the letter out of my shoulder bag to look at it again.

"Anais, Be at Winchester Station, Platform 7 at 23.00, 2/15. ~Lisette"

Lisette. Could I really face her after all this time? Well, I was about to find out. With a shaking hand, I shoved the letter deep into my bag. Where was she? It was 23.17. Lisette had never been late in the twenty plus years I had known her. What was going on?

During the ride,I looked in my rear window. Ace grinned towards me,as he saw how Lisette tried to seduce Joseph. I grinned back. ''Hey you, watch the road.'' Anais said and gave me a punch. I took a turn left and a right and we were almost at Blakey Street. I parked the car in the garage, while Lisette closed the garage door behind.

What we saw in the garage was horrifying....

There I lay, battered and beaten. I had beaten them to the search for the treasure but someone had already beaten me.........literally............I opened my eyes when I heard the car pull in but I couldn't move. My vision was fuzzy and from my doctoring days I knew I must have a concussion. My head hurt so badly that I closed my eyes again.

Suddenly I felt strong hands lifting me and the pungent scent of aftershave mixed with gunpowder. I opened my eyes again to be greeted by the stunning smile of Ace Masters. The knowledge that I was in his arms and safe for the moment had me swooning again for all the wrong reasons.

He was a bad guy and I knew it but I couldn't help the way I felt about him. I tried to tell him there was someone inside but before I could say anything there was a loud crash and something shattered in the house. Ace hugged me closer to his chest and ducked behind the car................

Slowly my vision cleared and I could see there were 3 women and a man I didn't know. One of the women was glaring daggers at me. Why did other women look at me like that when I was with Ace?

Still holding me in his arms Ace leaned over to the man and whispered "This is Lolita, a sleuth I know. She is ok."

The strange man leaned close to me and in a whisper he told me his name was Joseph and asked me what happened.

I told him I had got a clue about a treasure hidden in this house but when I came to search it there was already someone else there.

"They jumped me as I went to go in the garage entrance and beat me senseless."

Joseph got a steely look in his eyes and demanded to know how I had heard about the treasure. I took the opportunity to swoon against Ace's chest again. Just before I passed out again I heard gunshots coming from the doorway.

Whoever was in the house had heard the car pull in and they weren't waiting around to find out if it was friend or foe.

The word ‘strange’ could not even begin to describe this. Great efforts were taken to conceal the secret where about of the treasure, but two difference parties now beat us to it? How could this be? Only Father Manfred knew about our secret; could the DAB be interested in this great power of knowledge?

Before I could think further, a shot was fired into the fender of the car two inches from where I was. I cocked my revolver and returned fire. Vulkie was right behind me, also emptying his gun barrel. Whoever these people were, they were good.

Ace laid Lolita down and signaled to us. He exited from the side door to the backyard while we keep the shooters occupied. Finally I shot one in the arms, and while he was distracted Vulk2 claimed another one, his shot went right through the shooter’s head. We heard more guns going off in the far back, minutes later Ace yelled, “All cleared!”

We proceeded carefully. The hallway was a battlefield. There were five dead bodies on the floor. We met up with Ace in the kitchen.

“Do you know who these people are? Did you leave anyone alive for interrogation?” I asked.

“No.” Ace bended down to check another body, “Nothing on this guy either. They do not have a single piece of identification. No rings, no tattoos either.”

“Well who cares? Let’s just get what we came for and get out of here!” Lisette exclaimed.

“Lisette, this WAS our home, how could you say that as if you don’t care about the place?” Anais was hurt by Lisette’s lack of connection to their childhood dwelling. Lisette simply sighed and headed upstairs.

“Careful! There might still be more to these around the house.” I pointed at a corpse.

“Well I’m glad you still care, Joseph.” Lisette beamed, walked back and grabbed my arm. “You come with me and I’ll be alright.” She began to drag me up the steps, showing me every room along the way as if we were on a house tour. I looked back and saw Anais’. She was expressionless.

“Do you know what we’re looking for?” I asked Lisette, while watching out for any sudden surprises.
“The treasure, of course!” Lisette beamed.
“But what does it look like?”
“I’m … not sure …” Lisette replied. We went from room to room, until Lisette realized she had no idea what she should be looking for. When we returned downstairs, Ace had laid Lolita on a couch while he and Vulkie looked onto the studies.

There, sitting in front of the writing desk, Anais was reading a letter she had found, astounded. “She found it in that folder.” Vulkie whispered, pointing at a folder with the drawing of the statuette on the cover. Anais was shaking with emotion; streams of tears were rolling down her cheeks.

''Local man murdered for robbing statuette. Local authorities were astonished to hear that Mr. Nin had been shot down is his estate on the 20th of February 1999. Mr. Nin was believed to have been involved in a crime incident, regarding the Statuette of Bha Zhing Ze. When the police searched Mr. Nin's house, they didn't found the statuette. Mr. Nin's daughter,Anais and Lisette, are left alone. The police couldn't get contact with Anais and Lisette Nin also. Tomorrow,we will post an exclusive interview with Mrs. Lisette Nin,Mr. Nin's daughter.''

Anais was crying, she was horrified to know that her dead was murdered in this house,in this same chair maybe. Joseph quickly went over and comforted Anais. I held my arm around Ace,and gave him a little kiss,to comfort him. He looked astonished. So did everyone...

When we searched the place,we didn't find the item. The only thing we heard was a car, driving away. When I looked out of the window,I saw Father Manfred driving the car, with 2 more persons. Looks like the crooks in the house threw the ''treasure'' out of the window, and Father Manfred grabbed it.

''Anais, please, you must trust me,Father Manfred isn't who you think. He is also looking for the treasure.'' Anais still cried, but she went with us. We left Lisette behind, good riddance of her. The only thing she was,was a pain in the ass.

We still had our tommyguns from Father Manfred and we knew where he was driving. To the Church .

When we got there,we loaded our tommyguns and handguns and broke the door open.

They were just doing a ritual and when they heard the noise, they looked behind....

Anais gasped and suddenly darted into the room before the others even had a chance to draw their guns. She snatched up her treasured childhood toy........a handmade teddy dressed in Scottish tartan. On the floor next to it lay the miniature sporran gleaming in the candlelight. Snatching that up as well Anais raced back towards us ducking for cover as we started shooting.

Father Manfred dived for cover and when the shooting stopped he yelled my name "Lolita, you dirty traitor. I knew there was something about you......."

"Hahahahaha" I laughed. "Powerful men like you should pay more attention to the people who work for them. Pretending to be your secretary for years to learn your secrets and you NEVER SUSPECTED!"

Ace looked at me stunned. I had never told him about my undercover work. He thought I was just a beautiful sleuth who knew how to move on the dancefloor.

((Funny how there are two men and four women, each man loving two women. Weird! ;-) ))

"Here's the deal, Father." Ace told Manfred, "We won't kill you, provided you let us have that statue and get away with it."
"No deal." Manfred stared up at his captors, "DAB will never release that statue."

Ace took out his handgun, firing one into the Father's arm. "Just so you get the jist of who your dealing with."
"I told you I'm not going to tell you."
Ace turned towards the others. "This statue has got to be here somewhere. You should canvass the area, and maybe you'll find whoever has it."
"Ace, this is a big church!" Anais exclaimed.
"And that's why I'm going to stay with the Father." Ace gleamed devilishly, making the Father sweat like a pig.

As the others started searching, Ace worked over Manfred. Finally, Manfred gave in.

"It's with a nun. Sister Margaretta! She has it!" Manfred moaned.
"She's in the church now?"
"Yes." He grunted, "She's teaching the children on the second floor somewhere."
"Much obliged, Father." Ace smiled. He commenced tying the Father up and gagging him, stuffing him in a closet.
"I'll be back for you soon." Ace assured him, and he turned to find the others.

As he ran through one of the corridors, he ran into Vulkie.

"Hey, Vulkie!" Ace panted, "The Father said that a Sister Margaretta has it, and that's she's teaching kids on the second floor."
"Wonderful! Lisette should be nearby somewhere."
"Go get her." Ace told her, "We'll go and search the third floor while the others keep looking. Manfred could be lying."

Rounding a corner in my search for the statue I found Anais sitting on the floor inspecting her teddy bear.

"Come on" I exclaimed "This is no time for childhood reminiscing. We have to find that statue"

Anais looked up at me with shining eyes and held out the sporran. The tiny little pouch that her teddy had worn around his waist was now open and Anais was holding another piece of parchment in her hand. Apparently Father Manfred had been trying to open it using some sort of ritual but Anais had remembered a rhyme her father had taught her and finally realized it was used to open the tiny pouch.

"The power you seek is LIFE and DEATH. Beware all ye who seek. Find the Sanctuary where life is consecrated and death mourned."

"Fredo" Anais whispered "He knows how to use the statue. Life and Death. That is how he keeps returning when we think he has been killed!"

I stood stunned for a moment trying to comprehend what she meant. I had to shake myself to get myself moving again. I knew we must be in the right place. A CHURCH....... where babies are baptized and funerals held. Churches are called Sanctuaries.

Grabbing Anais' hand I turned and dragging her behind I said "We have to find the others. We have to warn them!"
