...

“He’s just gone!”

“What do you mean gone?”

“I mean gone, detective, disappeared without a trace.”

“Barry Grant? Gone?”

“…”

“And what do you expect out of me?”

“What should I expect out of you?”

Hours past, and Reese finally found a taxi. "To the Tricky Mister", she barks.

The taxi driver looks in his rear view mirror, and says, "Lady, what the hell is a tricky mister?" Reese gave him her steely glare, and says, "A bar!!" He shakes his head, and says, "Lady, look, I dont know what your problem is but, there is no such bar named that here"

Reese stopped, and said, "Owl and Walnut then! Just get me to a damn bar" The driver shakes his head, and mumbles "Detectives"

She thought to herself, "I've been so caught up in thinking about Barry, and wondering if he is ok, that I dont even know where I am" She sighs, and puts her head back, against the seat.

Clift’s head was slightly spinning.

He couldn’t believe the way he conducted himself throughout the appearances made by Miss Parr, Makensie and Miss Withers.

He didn’t understand what came over him: He wasn’t one to panic like he did when Miss Parr approached him. Yes, he was a little startled at first to be approached by the elusive Miss Parr so unexpectedly, but he wouldn’t have reacted the way he did under normal circumstances.

He would have invited Miss Parr to dinner with him and Makensie and asked her any questions he needed more casually. ‘Seriously Clift,’ he thought to himself ‘getting out paper and a pencil!’ He had the urge to walk after Violet Parr and apologize for his rash behavior, but finally decided against it. ‘I am sure I will find a way to her.’

He similarly had the urge to go after Reese Withers, and ask her to join him and Makensie for dinner and hopefully get some answers out of her. However, the thought of him sitting down with three women for a meal, no matter their beauty -and grace in Makensie’s and Miss Parr’s case- made him uneasy. ‘I’m sure Reese Withers will be reappearing soon.’

He sat across from Makensie and sipped on his wine. He suddenly remembered the carnations he had with him. “It’s been a while since we last met, Mak. There, I got those for you.”

Makensie smiled. “Clift, you shouldn’t have. You seem a little overwhelmed with the Violet Parr and Reese Withers encounters.”

Clift sighed. “Well, the pace of the Barry Grant case is speeding up rapidly. I don’t know if I have enough experience or power to keep up.”

Makensie put her hand on his shoulder. “I’m sure everything will fall into place somehow.”

Clift looked down under his table to the violet scarf in his hand, which Miss Parr dropped in her rush. “Perhaps they will, Mak… Now, shall we finally have our dinner?”

Hours past, as Makensie and Clift enjoyed their dinner, making great conversation filled with laughter.

She sat back in her chair, sighed, and says, "Wow, now I'm really going to have to walk extra fast, to work these calories off" Clift grinned, and said, "You and me both"

Makensie sat there, & says, "I suppose that I should go meet Reese. She said Tricky Mister? That woman gets so confused sometimes" Clift laughed, and says, "I'm sure her mind has been preoccupied" Makensie nods, and grows quiet. Clift looks at her, tilts his head to the side a bit, and says, "Penny for your thoughts?" She chuckled, and says, "Oh, its nothing. I really should be heading to the Owl and Walnut", as she stands. "I'll be happy to...", she begins. Clift politely cuts her off, and says, "It's already been taken care of. I can't be having you think that I'm not a gentleman" She smiled, gave him a friendly hug, & says, "Thank you, my friend! We will meet again soon. You know how to find me"

Clift put a generous tip on the table, nodded to the waiter, and followed Makensie out the door, holding it open for her.

She turns toward him, as they stand on the sidewalk, and she says, "Well, again, I thank you very much for a lovely evening, Clift. It's been fun" He smiles, saying, "Indeed it has. A very fun, interesting evening. You are very intriguing, Ms Brewer" Makensie, who is never good at such exchanges, just smiles, and says, "Thank you, I think" He laughed, and said, "Of course! It is definitely a compliment"

She smiles, and takes a deep breath, and says, "Ok then, well, I best be going in case Reese decides to tear the bar down or something" He chuckles, then says, "When you see her, apologize for my rudeness. I should've invited her to dinner with us" Makensie waved him off, and says, "Oh, no worries there. She doesn't do these kind of establishments. They'd have her kicked out as soon as she sat down. She is rather rough edged

person. The last time she was here, with a friend of hers, she drank so much wine that they had to ask her to leave. Her language was quite overwhelming" They both laughed, and says, "Well, still give her my apologies. I'm not that inconsiderate, as a rule. I was just, rattled, I guess at that time"

They talked a bit more, then said their goodbyes. He grabbed her hand, kissed the top of it, and said, "I will be seeing you soon, Mak" She grins, suddenly an odd sense of shyness coming over her, and says, "We will"

He thought about going to the Owl and Walnut himself, but, decided he would catch up with Reese Withers another time. Something told him that HE would be heariing from her, rather soon.

He turned, and walked down the sidewalk in opposite direction of Makensie, and thinks to himself, "Now, if I can find Violet Parr. I have a feeling that she has some helpful information regarding Barry Grant"

"TAXI!", he called out.

Reese sat at the bar, drinking a Bourbon and Coke. "Hey, isn't that drink for rich folks?", a voice said beside her. She looked over, and started to give a smart remark, when she saw Makensie standing there. "Didn't recognize your voice. What, a shrimp get stuck in your throat?", Reese said, with a friendly smirk. Then, she added, "I still have money, cuz. Just because I'm not a big shot detective right now, doesn't mean that I don't have connections" Makensie rolled her eyes, and says, "Yeah, yeah. Now, what did you want to talk to me about?"

Reese kept her face straight ahead, looking at her drink, and said, "Do you know anything about this CLIFT Garrett?" Makensie gives her a puzzled look, and says, "IS there something I should know?" Reese says, "Well, he just walks in from out of nowhere, to investigate my dear Barry Grant, the community's dear Barry Grant, and you don't find it a bit odd?" Makensie slowly shook her head, and says, "Actually.....no"

Reese shakes her head, and says, "I went to Barry's apartment the other day. Talked to his sister, Betty. We finally made nice with each other" There was silence for a bit, then Makensie says, "I wasn't aware that you knew his sister" Reese shrugged, and says, "I didnt. She moved into Barry's apartment, or at least, she is staying there right now. She knew me though" Reese sighs, then says, "I have to find Barry, Makensie. Guilt is really eating me up about just leaving as I did"

They continued to talk, as someone in the back watched them. He was smoking a cigarette, and said to another person beside him, "Keep your eye on Reese Withers the next few days. Something tells me, she is going to make a big fuss over this Barry Grant deal"

Meanwhile, Reese finishes up her conversation with Makensie, puts her money for her drinks on the bar top, and throws some money to Makensie, and says, "See? I can even afford to buy you a drink"

Makensie chuckles, and says, "Thank you, but, I'm leaving right behind you"

Reese stands up, and says, "Don't get mixed with a fellow detective, Mak. It complicates things" Makensie looks at her, frowns, and says, "Mixed up? I'm not mixed up with anyone. Friends are all I can have in this profession"

"Whatever. Remember that guy you......", Reese said, as they talked on their way out the door, into the night.

The two who had been watching from a distance, made their way to the door, as well. Not to follow them, but, to go check on a couple more interested detectives.

**Aylesbury Women’s Prison, Buckinghamshire, England 1304 hrs**

Clift walked into in a tiny, humid room with no windows, a single wooden table and three mismatched chairs. He was instructed to sit in the single chair facing the door, and was assured that Rebecca Franks would be escorted over to meet with him for 20 minutes very soon.

Clift sighed.

He wondered if twenty minutes with Mrs. Franks would get him any further in his investigations. Nevertheless he was very thankful to even be able to meet with her, having been refused initially. Director Jesse Hunter had to pull many strings and use all the leverage available to Obelisk and its London connections to get him those twenty minutes with Mrs. Franks.

Of course, it was more bureaucracy that stood in the way of his meeting with Mrs. Franks than anything else. Still it was admirable of Director Hunter to throw all his weight behind such a young and, by Mrs. Rudisill’s standards, reckless rookie.

Clift took out his pad and waited in silence for several minutes. He then started remembering his dinner with Makensie and how he really enjoyed her company. ‘Such a sweet gal’ he thought to himself. When exactly 15 minutes passed, he started writing down some names and questions:

Miss Violet Parr:
‘How do you know Barry Grant and how close is your relationship?’
‘What do you of his disappearance?’
‘Who else can help shed some light on where I can find him?’

Miss Reese Withers:
‘Having been Barry’s first love, where do you expect him to be now?’
‘Did he contact you before leaving?’
‘Who else can help shed some light on where I can find him?’

Clift read his questions over, and thought about the two very different personalities of Miss Parr and Miss Withers. He crumpled the paper. ‘This needs to be done openly and directly, no written questions beforehand’ he thought.

**Aylesbury Women’s Prison, Buckinghamshire, England 1352 hrs**

A beautiful, voluptuous blonde walked in as Clift was lost in his own thoughts.

He was startled suddenly by her magnificent built and attractive face. Clift enjoyed guessing people’s ages. He judged Rebecca Franks to be in her early to mid thirties, although she looked much younger despite the prison conditions.

Mrs. Franks was surprisingly civil. “Good day. I am told your name is Mr. Garrett.”

“Mrs. Franks.” Clift got up to shake her hand, but was subtly instructed not to by one of the guards. “Good day to you. Please have a seat...”

Becky had already sat down before Clift could finish his sentence. She flicked her hair. “Is this about one of my appeals against His Majesty’s Crown Court?”

Clift quickly evaluated Becky’s ability to handle shocking news and plunged right in. “No, it is not. I am not with the British Government. I am an American citizen, a private detective investigating the disappearance of Detective Barry Grant.”

Becky’s eyes welled up with tears, and her hard exterior broke down to its very core. She started to weep, very shockingly. Clift’s heart started to beat and he could tell he misjudged her inner strength: It would take more than just 20 minutes for Becky to able to recompose herself.
