Motion sickness?

Am a little concerned about the beta testing reports in this respect as I've been unable to play so many games because they make me queasy.

How bad is it? Is it every screen that induces this or just the odd one or two? Has anyone who normally suffers like me played with no ill effects?

Yikes, obviously I'll try it out for myself but as I can't do that yet am hoping someone can help lay my fears to rest. Have been really looking forward to SoM and will be gutted if I can't play :(

I've got to say I've never felt any motion sickness playing the game but again I don't suffer with motion sickness. I can understand how that may affect people who do suffer severe motion sickness.

Having said that I would recommend definitely trying the game and not letting it bother you until you see if it affects you personally Geddes.

I'm not sure but I don't think this has been mentioned on the SoM message board before, so maybe Ben hasn't been aware of it. There might therefore be a way to rectify the problem if he knows.

Thanks SS that makes it sound hopefull at least.

Maybe there is something that can be done, would hate to think I'll have to play the majority of the game with my eyes shut (although, may just improve my sucess rate, you never know). Am definitely going to give it a try and see how I get on regardless. Have waited the best part of a year for this game and wild horses couldn't keep me from at least giving it a shot.

*tries not to get too excited*

Roll on open beta!!

I have played one or two games that did make me queasy, to the point that I could not complete them. However, I haven't been affected by the screen movement on SoM. Perhaps you will not experience any adverse effects either, Geddes!

You could slow down your movement with your mouse, it should help (at least a little). If you do that it'll be more like a slow pan rather than jerky movement.

Ah Hawkeye, yet more light at the end of the tunnel. Thank you.

That sounds like a plan yoyo, I use a laptop with touchpad so will see how that pans out.

Thanks everyone for replying to what must seem like an inane topic, but know you've made a worried sleuth feel much better :)

I tend to get motion sickness from first person shooters as well. It used to kill me playing Doom, because when it first came out I liked it so much that I couldn't stop playing. I made myself so sick a couple of times that the nausea stuck with me for the whole day.

As for SoM, I've never gotten any nausea from it, but then I've never gotten sick from any of these point and click type games.

Well, the motion is clearly connected to the mouse movement, so if you are the kind of person that got some shivering in your hands, you might feel that there are too much motion. I thought it was especially annoying when the window was dancing, as I did not expect a window to be dancing. And, at that moment, when the window was dancing, I thought that I did not move the mouse, but when I released the hand from the mouse, everything got silent.... Even the window stopped dancing... ;-)

Is there a chance to turn off the automatic camera movement and panning around the room? If you try to click on an object anywhere near the edge the camera swings wildly out of control. If there was an option there could be the chance to move the camera of your own accord by click a look left or right button or using the arrow keys to pan around yourself.

I get motion sickness easilly, but had no problem with SOM. I think it is because the movement is controlled by the mouce and I move my mouce slowly, so I wont mis clues. I think there is nothing to worry about. Just try it and see if you like it.

Well, at the risk of a certain Ms Marple accusing me of narcissism, I am once again bumping my own thread.

I can see the potential for motion sickness there, not so much in the mouse control, as in the slingshot effect you get when the screen zips back after you search something. Thankfully, for me, it's not so great as to actually stop me playing. Shades of Mystery is fabulous and has engendered exactly the same excitement in me as Noir did when I first joined. So, as long as the dizzyness factor doesn't escalate I can forsee many a happy year for me on this new game.

Thanks Ben for bringing this out and giving me back my sleuthy fervour.

Alas, it looks like I'll never get that promotion at work now ;)
