I walked into the local pub. I was excited. For once, I had finished all my work for the day before dinner. It was such a relief, I was ready to celebrate. I approached the bar, set my beret on the counter and placed almost a quarter of the days' earnings beside it.

"How much scotch can I get for this, Joe?" I pointed at the money on the counter.

"Don't worry buddy. It'll be enough to keep you busy for a while." The bartender and I were on a first name basis because I spent so much time asking him questions, but sometimes I felt like he forgot mine. Just how many crime-ridden detectives could he be dealing with at once, anyway? He took the money and brought me a fifth and a glass. "Take your time though, eh?"

I looked around at the busy pub. There were quite a few interesting looking people about.

One of those interesting people is me, Kevin Greene. I'm on FIRE tonight! I am slaughtering a couple guys in a card game. Only problem is, I don't look like a great card shark cause I'm drinking a milkshake. Still, money is money, and I need money, and money is what I'm getting, milkshake or not!

Apolla stood at the bar with here usual drink in one hand and a cigarret in the other. It had been a while since she had seen any danger, and it made her nervous. She ajusted her strap on the silver sequen dress she wore. Bored she glanced around the room. He eyes landed on one of her rival detectives/allies R. Mortis, she knew him by reputation only, but his face was well know to all who read the paper. She approched him slowly.
"Darling, how are you?" She said, "Buy a drink for a beautiful lady will you?"

Dev Elcana was seated underneath the table. This wasn't by choice, just poor depth perception. It was hard looking out of one eye with the other swollen shut by somebody's hard fist. What's worse, that hard fist was attached to the equally hard waitress who took exception when he asked her, "Hey, doll. Whose milkshake brings all the boys to the yard?"

Perhaps he shouldn't have been staring at her chest when he said that, but it wasn't his fault. She had soup stains on her top - and that just made him curious.

I didn't originally notice that Mr. Elcana was under our card table. But, when I reached out to grab the stuff I had just won, I sat back down, and I guess I kicked him in his eye, cause he fell out onto the floor, clutching his eye. Funny, though. He was clutching his right eye, but his left was so swollen, I didn't think he could see out of it!

"Oh! Are you okay, man?" I said, concerned.

"My eye!" He said, as if I had knocked it out. There WAS blood gushing out, so I grabbed him, and we ran outside. I hailed a cab, but several other people followed us, one woman who I recognized as the ever-famous detective Apolla.

"There isn't room for all of ya!" The cabbie yelled when he pulled up. So, Mr. Elcana and I hopped in.

"To the hospital! Quick!" I told the cabbie.

"Don't let that guy drip all over the car! It was just cleaned!" The cabbie snarled, as we pulled off.

There must have been a series of "Follow that cab!", because Apolla and another man took one more cab, and then a whole bunch more followed. That's curiosity!

We got to the hospital, and all six cabs unloaded. Into the emergency room we went!

Squeezing into that emergancy room was no joke. My dress caught on something as I was making my way in the room and it wasn't cheep either. I saw Kevin by the Nurses station and walked over to him. Apparently he knew something about this as he was speaking very animatedly to the nurse on duty. "Maybe something interesting is going to happen tonight," I thought to myself.
"What happened Darling? Anything I could help you with?" I asked him as I lit a new cigarette.
"I don't think you can smoke in here." He told me looking at my lighter pointedly.
"Darling its too late not to smoke or care about the rules. Anyway this is more important."

"Whatev. You didn't see me kick Dev Elcana? Man, he's bleeding like crazy!" I said. I was a little rude with the lady, because I was NOT looking forward to the impending investigation.

"Well, I'm sorry, Darling!" She apologized, "Did you kick him on purpose?"

"No. He was sitting under the table! That part I don't understand..."

Just then a nurse came by, grabbed the cigarette right from Apolla's mouth, and threw it in the trash can.

"No smoking in here, hun!" The nurse scoffed. Apolla just threw it off, embarresed.

I couldn't resist. "Told you."

"Yes, well, I guess you did." Man, she's a real lady!

"I'm sorry, Apolla. I'm just worried about what happens next!" I had to apologize.

"It's okay, dar..." She started to say. She didn't finish because just then, the piece of faberic that had gotten caught when she came through the door was hanging off her dress. A nurse walked through, and her toe got caught on the fabric. The nurse slipped and fell, and took the whole bottom of Apolla's dress with it!

Jim Samurai was among the people who got into the cabs that night, he also overheard the conversation between Apolla and Kevin, not that he coud help it 'cause 1.- it was packed with people and you could hardly move and 2.- 80% of said people were detectives, and wether you want to admit it or not EVERY Sleuth overhears conversations, that's their job.... anyway, here's the account:

"C'mon Kev, Dev Elcana was under that table 'cause he was staring HARD at the waitress's bosom, his eyes were literally glued, of course you were playing poker AND winning so all of your attention must have been in your cards and poker face right?"

"Oh yes. Believe me, I wouldn't have kicked him. Too bad I did, though. Not only does he have a bleeding eye, but I was holding 4 aces!"

I said this, completely ignoring Apolla's shreaks and squeals, as she ran into the bathroom. A bunch of sick men with sick minds whistled their heart out at her trim figure and sexy caboose.

Myself included. :-)

Meanwhile, Dev Elcana was in the ER, with crowds trying to see in. It was quite a sight to see! Apolla's was better though. But, I do like Apolla, and I she got a towel or something. At least she knows men would whistle if she decided to streak. :-)

After "borrowing" the uniform of the nurse that previously scolded me, I left the restroom and hurried on to the ER...someting about Kevin unnerved me...maybe it was his grin that was a little too big...or maybe it was that ace stuck in is shoe.
