Total Skill Points vs. Unspent Skill Points

Hi
I'm a newbie that found Sleuth yesterday. I have quit one case, solved one case and made 1 false accusation. I'm currently stuck on a case and would like to buy the interragation skill. My profile says that I have 21 skill points total and 1 unspent skill point. Why can't I use some of the skill points from the total amount, even though I haven't bought any skills yet on this site?

Sincerely,
SJ Bristow

The total skill points is all the skill points you've accumulated (and used).

The unspent are the ones of that total that are unspent.

Why can't you use the 21? Because the total skill points includes the 20 you get when you create your detective - so you have spent 20 already (on the skills you got when you made your detective). You have gained 1 from experience since then and, when you have enough unspent, you can buy interrogation.

In other words, you can't spend total skill points, only unspent ones.

You start off with a certain number of skill points when you register a detective...If I remember it is 20. But in choosing the easy route of making the character (i.e. picking freelance reporter as your background), you automatically spent those skill points for the skills your detective started with. You get more skill points by correctly solving cases, and right now you have one to spend...You will get more as you solve more.

Also, as a smart/charming detective, you do not want to buy interrogation (a tough skill) right away...It would be better to start by getting more skills from the smart and charming sets.

P.S. There is a lot of information on these and other topics in the Welcome Newbies thread on this page :)
