My detective is "smart and charming". I am still buying the smart and charming skills and unless I subscribe, I won't be buying any tough skills for a while.
I was given a Black Trench coat as a reward for a favor today which gives me +2 tough points (no negative pts on smart or charm).
My question is this:
Should I keep this coat or sell it ($800) and buy something that gives me smart and/or charm points?

I see two things from your profile. One, you're making friends with the DAB at the moment. They do have a couple of things in their stores that you may be interested in. The prices are going to be probably significantly higher than what you've been expecting from the Detective Store, so save your pennies now. You might also check out Big Lucy's Cabaret. Their merchandise changes constantly, but you may find something of worth there.
Secondly, you appear to have taken the plunge and subscribed. Congratulations. While the agency you're with is new, they may be able to help you out with getting ahold of equipment. You can also trade with your new agency teammates for stuff they don't want or need.
