Detective Biography

I've loved her for ten years now, and known her for more than twice that. She's not the most glamorous woman I've ever seen, but she's the only person I've ever known, man or woman, who has the power to take my breath away with just a look, and make me feel like I'm the only person in the room with that same look.
She was literally just a kid the first time I met her. I was a 22-year-old dumb farm boy from Illinois, fresh out of med school, and even fresher off the lines of World War I. I thought I'd seen atrocity past the point of belief in the foxholes of rural France. Between the flamethrowers, the tanks, and especially the mustard gas, I thought I'd seen the worst humanity could throw at itself. Little did I know....
I was on R&R in London, when I was approached by a fellow American. That didn't seem all that odd. The fact that he was a U.S. Naval Commander in a sea of Army boys lookin' for li'l ol' me did raise my eyebrows slightly. Seemed that a ten-year-old girl had been kidnapped by a completely amoral bunch of psychopaths. If his people managed to find her, and through some miracle of God, the girl was still alive, they were going to need a surgeon standing by. Would I be willing to help? He showed me a couple of pictures of past nightmares these lunatics had committed. After I'd finished losing my lunch, I agreed.
They found her two days later. She'd been captive a total of nine days. It was every bit as bad as they'd predicted. While the rest of the team went after the terrorists, my only priority was the girl. When I first caught sight of her, I almost lost my lunch again. She'd been brutally beaten, whipped, and tortured. Practically every inch of her body was covered in wounds and burns. But the worst was her left leg. It'd been broken in half a dozen places, the kneecap was shattered, and she'd be incredibly lucky to ever walk again.
As I began working to get her put on a stretcher, she opened her eyes and looked at me. Through the haze of excruciating pain in her gaze, I saw the most amazing thing. This young innocent who had been traumatized so monstrously was looking up at me with eyes full of quiet trust and patient hope. She reached out a hand to me, and smiled so softly when I placed my hand gently in hers.
It took years of hard work on her part, and tears and pain and encouragement and even a couple of shouting matches between the two of us, but she learned how to walk again. I made it my goal in life to see the bastards that had taken her were dealt with, and that she would always be safe from them.
Today, that brave little girl who looked up at me so trustingly is now my wife. We celebrate our first anniversary in early June. I thank God each and every day that she's had faith and trust in me over all these years. I also thank Him for the gift of our child, due in late August. Every night, when I drift off to sleep, I hold her close and smile, ever grateful for the Angel in my arms.
