Hey there!
Well, I know they exist but not much more. How can I get them? By doing favours? How will they help me?
And just in case, I'm not as new as you'd think...but my other, good account is locked...too many wrong accusations :'(

You'll get two contacts in each city...eventually. You get them by doing favors. You know how at the end of a favor the person you did the favor for usually gives you something? Well, sometime, instead of giving you something, the person will tell you they'll be of service to you in the future. (Anyone know the exact phrase?) And that person will then be your contact, which means they will NEVER CLAM up on you! Really! You can just ask them all the questions you want, and they will answer them all!
Physical evidence contacts are especially beloved. In NYC, this would be the banker, the shoemaker, the tailor and the barber, who can help you id notes, footprints, threads and hair, respectively. You get one physical evidence contact per city.
Witness evidence contacts are good, too, but not /as/ good in most people's minds. You get one witness evidence contact per city as well.
The order you get them in is random. You should get both contacts before you get to 150,000 or so experience points, possibly sooner.

From the Newbie FAQ (link located in tiny tiny gre letters at the bottom of this page and most others)
"Favors and Contacts
Favors are cases you work on at the request of one of the recurring characters in sleuth. If you want to work on a favor, talk to one of those characters when you aren't already working on another case. The reward for performing a favor is usually a piece of special equipment that can't be purchased in the detective shop. Occasionally, performing a favor will earn you a contact. When a given character becomes your contact, they can always be counted on to be cooperative in your future investigations. In other words, a contact will never refuse to answer one of your questions. "
Hope that helps. :)
