Now that my detective has earned some money I'm trying to open an agency.
I see that some office has a crime lab and there is also a different status bonus.
My questions are:
1) What is the advantage of having a crime lab?
2) What is the status bonus?

the crime lab is important because if you are doing a case and you get a few pieces of evidence that come up as "You found a thread" or "You found a note" then you can put the case in the case files and it will also be in the crime lab. Then other people from the agency can go the crime lab and analyze that evidence for you, so then when you go back to your case it will say "You found a thread from a male's clothes" or "You found a note written by someone who is left handed"

Essentially it just makes some of the cases a little easier to solve

Your second question, we are all still trying to figure that one out. There are rumors, but no one seems to be able to verify them.

However, the general agreement is that the status bonus is a good thing.

There are lots of agencies looking for agents, too, and I think a good first step is to join one. IF you are open with them about planning to move on to start your own agency eventually, there should be no hard feeling when you go, and you can learn a lot about running an agency by being in someone else's. Plus, you just might like it there so much that you don't want to leave!
