Mother's Day!? Is this an American thing! In England, we have Mothering Sunday in March! How strange....

No it is not an American thing.

Mothers day is celebrated around the world at different dates.

England celebrates it on 4th Sunday of Lent (the 40 day period leading up to Easter.) So it is more based on religion. As mothers days was invented by the ancient greeks to celebrate the mother of all gods (forgot the name, they had so many, and I mix them up with the roman ones.) I believe that christianity eventually ran with it. Which is why in England it got instituted to fit on their christian calendar of easter, ascension day etc. As it is inherently traditionally in England a religious celebration. That later turned in to something else.

In other countries it was instituted to simply honor mothers.

A lot of countries did not celebrate since ancient times mothers day. This explains, when all other countries did institute it, they picked different dates.

The US has been a big influence on many other countries picking the same date. The woman that pleaded to celebrate it, wanted it to be the second Sunday of May, which would be the anniversary of her mothers death. I personally quite like that the Holland picked the American dates. The reason why is the American civil war heroine that fought for the institution of Mothersday promote peace, motherhood and womanhood....on both sides of the conflict.

I may not have the entire story correct. But from what I know about European history and culture....this is what I come up with in any case.

Thanks again jstkdn, you do seem to be very knowledgable! I knew that the British day was a religious thing, and those have generally been 'borrowed' from ancient religions, in order to keep new converts happy, but I wasn't aware of why it was different in America. I mean, they're a christian country aren't they!? Anyway, thanks again for filling in the gaps! Also, for everyone who celebrates Mother's Day today, or who has the pleasure of being a Mother, Happy Mother's Day to you! I hope you enjoy/enjoyed it! :D

I am not knowledgeable, I just know some useless trivia. The important stuff I never remember. :)

You are right jstkdn. *Reading local newspaper trivia and Mother's day facts*
I can't remember the woman's name but yes she tried to incorporate Mother's day around the civil war (1860's) and certain areas tried to kept it going via town celebrations. The official u.s. government incorporated Mother's day was first celebrated on the first Sunday of May 1914 and Thank Goodness it is still going strong. It's nice to be appreciated for a sacrificing woman that sometimes gets taken for granted. Mother's day should be celebrated everywhere.

Always nice to remember Grandmothers too.
