Does anyone in New York have any books they care to share?

Can unsubscribed detectives even do that?

Books are hidden around the Sleuth world. Whilst you can read books in subscribers' apartments they don't get added to your personal collection.

I know there are a few around the city, but I think it will be a long time before I can afford any more books. Does reading someone else's books gain experience, or just those I collect?

You get experience for reading a book you haven't read, even if it's on someone's apartment bookcase. Pretty sure that's right.

You can still gain XP by reading a book you haven't collected yourself, yup, since you'd have been invited to a friend's apartment and read half a dozen of their books while waiting, as people do.
