The heavy rain made the visibility much harder to see the man that Marc was chasing through the city streets. The sidewalks were slick with water pouring into the street. The chase started after a failed attempt on killing Marc, who had no clue why this man wanted to kill him. But then again, he could think of several reasons. They ran twisting and turning through alleys and then back into the streets on different parts of town. “STOP!” Marc yelled at the man. The man kept running.
The man kept his distance from the detective. Marc was only able to catch a glimpse of the mans feet as they turned around corners. Marc was out of breath as they stopped in front of an old abandoned apartment complex. “You have no where left to run, buddy,” Marc said to the dark figure. “Come on and get me, Marc. You’re right where I want you!” The man turned and ran into the building and slammed the door shut.
Marc swore to himself as he ran up the stairs leading to the closed door. Marc reached down and turned the handle. The door was unlocked. The man he was chasing was toying with him. The building was dark. There was no light except for what little the street lights outside gave out in the rain, which wasn’t nearly enough to depend on. Directly in front of Marc was a long hallway with six doors. Three on each side. Marc moved to the first door and kicked it open.
“ You can run,” Marc said, “but you can’t hide. I will find you.” He walked out of the first room and moved to the second door. Just like the first, that room was empty. He kicked in the third door. And walked in quietly with his revolver drawn out. “Where are you?” Marc whispered to himself. He turned to leave. As he turned around he found himself face to face with a masked stranger. “Here,” he said. The blow on Marc’s head knocked him unconscious.

"So, to make a story short, that's it," Ed said, while looking at the group of detectives. It wasn't a pleasant story to hear, but it gave Vulkie enough information to brew further on.

"Ed, you mentioned a list, something about cigars... That is the most interesting fact out of all, together with the photograph you saw Marc on," Vulkie said. "May I take a look at that list?" Vulkie asked Ed. Ed gave Vulkie the list and she scanned it.

"There are one or two names I recognize on this list... A senator called Johnathan L'Avieau and a scumbag called Jerry Horton. These are the people who can try to give us information. Shall I be so kind to go to the senator and ask him if he knows anything about the case?" Vulkie asked to the group of detectives.

"Just be careful Vulkie... I suspect a greater source of evil behind this. This person, who kidnapped Marc, has a decent motive and a grudge against him," Riza said.

"Oh, that sounds just wonderful, that means just half of Sleuthville had a motive to kidnap Marc. Well, that surely makes me feel comfortable..." Molly replied, with a hint of sarcasm in her voice.

Joseph grinned. "I know Marc, he won't go easy though... Nah, it had to be someone he trusted... The only question that's left is: who?" Joseph asked.

"Ed" Vulkie said, "I believe you said you needed to head to the police station earlier. Might I suggest you go there. I know it's been really difficult for you, but we need all the men and women we can get to find Marc..." Vulkie said, looking around the restaurant.

"Then maybe Joseph or Molly can go look after this Horton fella?" Riza offered.

"Fine, I'll go" Molly said, and with that, she left.

"Joseph, maybe you can use your contacts at the FBI to see who has made the last phonecall to Marc's office. I have a hunch there is something interesting to find in his phone records, from just before he was kidnapped," Riza said.

And with that, the detectives went off, to pursue their goals and to find Marc...

Arriving at Senator L'Avieau's place, Vulkie immediately put a smile on her face when she saw how the place was guarded and what kind of a house the Senator had available for him and his family.

As Vulkie approached the guard house, she informed the guards that she wanted to speak with the Senator about a delicate matter. She produced her detective license and the guards nodded, opening the gates for her.

As Vulkie walked towards the doors of the house, she couldn't refuse but to smile. She saw how big the estate was and the Senator even had a large garage with all kinds of automobiles. As she pondered whether to pay a visit to the garage first, to admire the cars, the doors were opened and a butler stood in the doorway.

"How can I help you, Miss...?" the butler asked. "Miss Nouson. Miss Victoria Nouson. I am here on behalf of the local police department and of a kidnapped friend." Vulkie said honestly to the butler. The butler began to sweat. "Yes, I'll see if the Senator is available. Would you be so kindly to wait in the parlor for the Senator, I'll inform him of your arrival" the butler said. Vulkie nodded and followed the butler to the parlor.

"Miss Nouson, a pleasure to meet you!" the Senator said, smiling and shaking her hand. Vulkie detected that something was wrong with the Senator. He was overactively being polite, too polite to Vulkie's standards.

"Mr. L'Avieau, I'm here on behalf of the local police..." Vulkie began, but the Senator cut her off. "Let's cut to the chase, shall we?" the Senator said to Vulkie, while guiding her to a sofa. "Do take a seat, my dear. We may as well make ourself comfortable, shouldn't we?" the Senator added.

Vulkie took a seat. "A good friend of mine, Mr. Lacrimosa, has been kidnapped. We have found a certain type of cigar brand, that is only been sold to a certain type of persons. I've seen that list of persons and your name was on it, Mr. L'Avieau" Vulkie said.

The Senator began to sweat lightly and was getting nervous. He was hiding something. "It is true, I have a certain type of taste for a certain type of cigar, but that doesn't automatically place me there on the scene. For your info, I even supplied some friends of mine, who work at City Hall, with those cigars. Dear friends of mine, as I may add. Influential in this city, they are too..." the Senator said. "Now, if you'll excuse me, I have more important business to discuss with a friend of mine. You know, he's the secretary of the mayor, don't you?" the Senator added. Vulkie shook his hand, and before she left the mansion, she asked : "One more thing Mr. L'Avieau. Where were you when my friend got kidnapped?".

"I was at home, writing a speech. I'm having a speech planned this week. Now, if you don't mind?" the Senator replied. Vulkie nodded and left.

"This guy is hiding something and whether he likes it or not, I'm going to find out what that is!" Vulkie thought in her mind, as she walked away from the guards, towards her parked car. Just that moment, a car drove by, a window scrolled down and a tommygun was pointed at Vulkie. The trigger was squeezed gently and the tommygun sprayed it's bullets at Vulkie. Vulkie looked at shock at the car, frozen to the spot.....

June 2, 1925

"Right," Sully said. "So, Mrs. Von Schmidt has no clue where we could find it, and Erik is dead. We have no leads. What do think we should do?"

Marc leaned back in his chair and took off his hat. Then he reached into his desk and pulled out a cigar. Per Domo. After a deep sigh, he spoke up. "I think we need to go to London and get some more information from Mr. Kumar at the museum. I don't think he told us all he knows. If he knows what it does, he knows how to activate it."

It took longer than Marc thought it would to get approval from the chief. But after convincing him that the murder was linked to a stone, and that stone was linked to something huge and needed to be stopped, the chief finally agreed. Marc and Sully left for London.

The trip on the ship was about two days long. Boring. Marc and Sully both spent the whole trip in the bar drinking and laughing with the waitresses and the bartender. London was beautiful when they walked down the ramp and onto the docks.

The museum was further into the city and it took them a while to get there. "Mr. Kumar, I'm detective Marc Lacrimosa of the NYPD and this is my partner, Sully. I spoke to you on the phone a couple days ago about the Heart of Anubis."

Harry Kumar smiled. "Yes, I remember you," he said, "you're working on a murder case. That brought you all the way out here?"

"Well," Marc hesitated. "I think you know more than you told us. You said, who ever activates the stone becomes one like a God, correct?"

"Yes."

Marc lit a cigarette. "You know how to activate it?"

"What? What are you talking about?"

"Don't play games with me! That stone is missing and someone has it. You know more about it than Sully and I do."

"Yeah, but you honestly think I know how to activate it?"

"Yes, Mr. Kumar, I do. Now you can talk, or I'll take out into the alley and I'll knock it out of you!"

Marc and Sully grabbed Harry, each one grabbing one of his arms and drug him out the back door into an alley and threw him into a pile of garbage. "Look, Kumar, don't make us, and especially me, get violent here. Because I'm not afraid to put you in the hospital."

"Look, detectives, I have no clue how to activate it-"

SMACK! Marc punched Harry in the face, making his nose bleed. "I'm telling you, Harry. You better talk."

"I don't-"

SMACK! This time Sully cut in and pistol whipped Harry across the face. "We're not in the states. The same laws don't apply here. We can beat you into a pulp. Now tell us what you know!"

"Fine! No more, please!" Kumar pleaded.

He rose to his feet, breathing heavily and wiping blood from his nose. "Let's go into my office."

The three men walked back inside and into Harry's office. His office was huge, full of books, as far as the eye can see. Harry pulled a book off the shelf and opened it to the middle.

"The Heart of Anubis...let's see here. Ah ha! It reads, 'The Heart of Anubis is a gem that is said to hold a special power, making its holder immortal like that of a god. There are five pieces to the stone. Once all five pieces are collected, the stones must be arranged in a shape of a diamond with the biggest stone in the middle. The stones then activate. In order for it to work, all stones need to be present.'"

Sully looked at Marc. "Mrs. Schmidt mentioned that her husband new about the Heart of Anubis. I think he's got four of the five stones hidden. And if we dont' find them and get rid of them, Mrs. Schmidt's going to die next."

Marc nodded. "Let's go." And they left back to New York.

"I'll go with Ed," Riza said. Everyone knew what had to be done. Ed nodded and walked away with Riza right next to him. Zeo and Molly also left. The scene was now being cleaned up by the police and taking eye witness accounts of what had happened.

Ed walked at a steady pace and Riza had to almost jog to keep up with him. "Ed, wait up. Where are we going?" She asked." The police station?"

"No. Those guys.....They were Italian. They know who we're after and what it involves," Edward replied, "I think they were from La Cosa Nostra but I doubt Isabella sent them. She may have given the ok, but I don't think she really knew. Or at least something tells me that."

"No..someone who has been in this business a lot longer than her. Leopoldo Turilli. I briefly noticed his name in the newspaper in the Hall of Records. I've heard his name before and I know that him being Italian, its not hard to find him."

"What makes you say that?" Riza asked.

"Italians drink a lot of wine. So he's most likely in a restaurant, eating some kind of pasta and wine." Edward replied.

"Sammy's?"

"No. Greeks and Italians hate each other. Both say that the other is 'thick headed.'"

"Edward, there are so many Italian restaurants in the city, it will take days to find him."

"Nah," Edward replied, "I think I know where we'd find him."

"And where would that be?" Riza asked.

They stopped walking and turned to their right. There, right in front of them was a small Italian diner, with the word's "TURILLI'S". "Right here," Ed said with a smile.

"How did you-?"

"Honestly, I don't know. I'm just that good," Edward said jokingly. And the two walked in.

The dinning room was full, and sure enough as Ed had predicted, Leo was sitting and talking with one other person and drinking wine with a plate of spaghetti. Ed and Riza approached the table, and Leo held up a hand. "I know who you are. You're not talking to me with out being searched."

Edward was always prepared for a time like this. Attached to his wrist, was a special mechanism that he had custom made. It was a spring that held a tiny four shot .22 caliber pistol. With a flick of the wrist, the "Springer", as he called it, would instantly load the gun into his palm. A large man with a dark cigar appeared and made his way to Ed and Riza to pat them down for any weapons.

Ed looked at Riza who nodded. Whether or not the nod meant "yes give up your weapons" or "let's take them", Ed responded with only one thing on his mind. Revenge. In quick succession, Ed grabbed his pearl handled Dirk knife and thrust it into the throat of the first man. At that instant he also flicked his wrist and the small, palm sized pistol appeared, and he shot the second man in the forehead, right between the eyes.

Leo was dumbstruck. He sat there paralyzed, as Riza hit him in the head to knock him unconscious. Ed put his gun and knife away, grabbed Leo, and drug him outside.

No one dared to look or move. By now it was normal for people to go into restaurants and kill someone. Only killing Leo was not the intention for this matter. No, rather, it was for information.

Ed and Riza put Leo in the backseat of a car, not bothering to tie him up, but instead, stripped him of his pistols. It was a fifteen minute car ride out side the city to a small abandoned shack.

"Wake up, Mr. Leo," Riza said smoothly. "We just have couple questions for you. Then we'll send you on your way."

Leo woke up, groggy from being unconscious and a sharp pain in his head from being hit. "Where am I?"

"In the middle of no where," Ed replied. "Now let's get started shall we?"

"Started?! About what?! What the hell is this? Huh?"

"Relax," Riza cut in. "You know somethings we don't, and we want the information."

"About what? You two are nuts!"

Edward yelled, "Shut up! What do you know about detctive Marc Lacrimosa?"

"Marc? He's a creepy bastard, that's what I know. I know he likes to hide in the shadows and appear out of know where like some goon from the comic books."

"We know that already!"

"We want to know about your connection with him and the Heart of Anubis!"

"If I talk will you let me go?"

"If we let you go, you going to hunt us down?"

Silence filled the room.

"Mr. Turilli, I believe Ed asked you a question," Riza said.

A deep sigh filled the room. "No, I won't. But I can't say, I'll forgive you either."

"Fine," Edward said.

"I know for almost a whole month Marc had nothing on the case. His first big lead was on the 3rd of June, 1925 from Harry Kumar. If you must know, I helped him get rid of those damned jewels-"

"Jewels?" Riza asked.

"Yes, jewels. There are 5 stones and when brought together, they give you a special power; to become one like a god, I think. I think the only person to ever live forever is God himself. Just because I'm in organized crime don't mean that I can't believe in God, so don't give me any goofy looks."

"Why did you send those men to kill us?" Edward asked.

"I didn't want you knowing that I had something to do with it."

"What did you have to do with it?" Riza asked twirling a knife in between her fingers.

"I helped him get rid of them. One is in Boston Bay, the other in the ocean, and the last three are in the river. All in a block of concrete."

"Well that explains that we're not going get them anytime soon. Who ever has Marc is bound to be looking for them, and we know he's not getting them anytime soon either."

Ed cut the rope holding Leo's hands. "Leo, someone has Marc. Do you have any idea who it could be?"

"Not a single clue."

"Who was is partner in the case? Or did he work alone?"

"No, he had a partner, but he was killed in a gunfight over the jewels."

They left and got back into Ed's car, leaving Leo by himself to find his own ride back home. Riza frowned again. "Marc never mentioned this case to anyone I know, which seems a little odd. The only person whom he would have ever mentioned this case to would be one person that he's known longer than any of us."

"And let me guess. You haven't the slightest clue who his closest friend could be?"

"No, but I know who would. Turn left here at this light. We're going to the Tricky Mister Bar."

Edward knew exactly who they were going to talk to. The town's local fixer. Also known as Shady. He knew almost everything.

((For some odd reason, I can't get the dates right for the 1925 case. The Newspaper in the beginning is supposed to be dated June 29. I started in the beginning of June. The date for the 1925 case should now be June 3, not June second. Sorry I got the dates mixed up. My next post is coming soon, guys. Thanks for being patient.))
