I'm a huge fan of Rex Stout and his Nero Wolfe stories. It's murder injected with a little comedy. (if that makes any sense) ;)

How could I forget Rex Stout?
Oh! And Carole Nelson Douglas is also one for comedy in writing.
Lilian Jackson Braun has the well known "The Cat Who..." series, which are good too.
I know more, I really do... My brain just isn't working properly...

Gah,nothing's better then a good Arthur Conan Doyle book.
But I'll have to admit, there are better stories.. Hmm,let me think... Well,I always enjoy a "Hercule Poirot" book. "And then there were none" is a good example!.
Btw,I have a link somewhere with all kinds of mystery books online. Just pm me if you want the link, because I think I'm not allowed to post the link here...

I don't know... Holmes using crack and morf kinda turned me off of him. Made me respect the story less. And yes, I do know that they were legal in England at the time. And him dying and coming back to life was just... odd.
Other good authors:
Catherine Coulter (one of my mom's favorites)
Janet Evanovich
Leo Bruce
This publisher has some pretty good series, too. http://www.midnightinkbooks.com I like The Supper Club Mysteries and The Black Widow Agency series quite a bit from them.
Michael A. Black is a little known author that I spoke to briefly at the Printer's Row Book Fair that is held annually in Chicago some weekend in June. He was very nice and gave me a few tips on writing mysteries. So, read his books, too. His website is: http://www.michaelablack.com/

I actually prefer Sherlock Holmes above all other detective stories and characters. He is the master Sleuth. Now I did read a book called
" The List of Seven" by Mark Frost that put a huge spin on all that is Sherlock Holmes. The main character is Arther Conan Doyle and he is the Watson character type. Very great story. There is a sequel
" The Six Messiahs" which is pretty good too. You should definately try them.

I did like the books... just not Holmes... *shrug* And on the topic of Holmes spin offs, The Beekeeper's Apprentice and the other books with Mary Russell and Holmes are pretty good.

I think I liked Holmes because of his faults. The perfect crime solving machine, lauded by all as the model of intelligence and foresight, and yet still all the while, all that is frail and flawed in humanity. How ordinary a Detective would Sherlock Holmes have been if he hadn't been flawed? Could regimental Watson living his bland suburban existence, even magically transplanted with Homles intelligence & foresight, ever have been as Holmes as Holmes? Never.

My favourite is "And then there were none" for sure! So far, that is :) I did fall asleep through the beginning, when all the characters where being introduced, but when they started dying, I woke up in a hurry :D
