New York - 1931

I was framed. I did not kill her, but who would've believed me?

Life was getting grimmer as citizens felt the real pinch from the great stock market crash two years ago. My private investigation business was losing a load of clients. Most of them had gone bankrupt, or worse, jumped off the Chrysler Building. Mrs. Gatsby was a loyal client. My only mistake was becoming too intimate with her.

That day, I received a note from her, asking me to meet her in the VIP room of the Astor Theatre. The room was dark when I got there; I thought she was playing naughty. Before I knew it, I was hit from the back, and woke up to find blood all over me with a knife in my hand. Mrs. Gatsby was laying two feet from me, stabbed to death.

I heard the police whistle nearby, and I instinctively ran. Two officers saw me and chased me down three blocks before I loose them. I quickly returned to my office, washed off the blood and changed. I took what was necessary, including my revolver, and composed perhaps my last letter on my prized Remington typewriter. I made some carbon copies, and send the letters to my detective friends before I went into hiding.

They were my final hope.

((Note: I posted this beginning at Shades of Mystery, but I thought it'd be nice to see where it leads in Noir. Hope you'll enjoy it. Feel free to improvise! ))

The goon who approached the open window lighting a cigarette yelled in Japanese as he saw Zeo eave dropping. Zeo half climbed and half felled down the drainage pipe. He ran for cover as quickly as he could, but the Japanese weapon was faster. Zeo felt a sharp pain at the back of his thigh. He pulled out from his bleeding muscle a strange bladed dart in the shape of a star. The edge was gleaming with a tint of green. Zeo began to feel dizzy. He stumbled and he tried to run, but his legs were not abiding his brain.

Some goons caught up with Zeo and easily picked him up.

"Is this poison?" The bigger goon, apparently not Japanese, asked the other goon while picking up the star shaped dart.

The other goon smirked. "Just enaugh sleep drug to put tham down. Good Ninja waapon." Together they hulled Zeo back to the restaurant, and opened the door into a small storage room. They saw a dirty rag, some cut ropes and broken mirror pieces on the floor.

"Whare's the garl?" The Japanese goon asked while entering the store room. Suddenly someone hiding behind the door kicked the Japanese goon. Zeo took the opportunity and drove the dart the other goon was holding into his belly. The bigger goon was 'tranquillized' quickly. Zeo then knock the Japanese goon unconscious.

"Zeo! It's good to see you!" It was Lolita. The kitchen staff stared at the havoc. One of them ran up the stairs to the second floor.

"Hurry! Run!" Zeo said, his voice still groggy from the drug in his blood stream.

Lolita helped Zeo out of the restaurant. They were in the middle of town and caught a cab easily. As they open the car door another star shaped dart hit the body of the taxi, barely missing them.

"Drive!" Lolita yelled to the cab driver as she closed the door, Zeo took out his gun. With fear the driver stepped hard on the gas and they sped away with screeching tires.

"You alright Zeo?" Lolita asked. Zeo shook the dizziness off.

Zeo always had trouble sleeping, occupational hazard. "I guess my daily massive doze of sleep pills rendered the tranquillizer darts useless on me." Zeo gave a weak smile. He then told Lolita about Valentino. "They wanna silence him, and if they do, I'd be doomed for good."

The frightened cab driver asked the two where they'd like to go. Zeo gave him the address to Valentino's flat.

They were too late. Valentino's flat was a bloodied mess. Grace Gatsby's Japanese lover was lying in his own living room, with a kitchen knife sticking through his throat. The corpse was still shaking involuntarily, and the wounds were fresh.

"Zeo, look!" Lolita pointed at an envelop on the floor. Zeo picked it up. It was addressed to the police commissioner, but envelope was empty.

"Look like Valentino made a confession. He must know what was coming." Valentino’s lifeless eyes stared at the ceiling. Zeo closed them.

"But where's the letter now?" Lolita asked.

"Whoever did this must have it"“ Suddenly they heard screeching tires from the street outside. Lolita looked out the window to see a non-descript vehicle rounding the corner and disappear. There was no way the two could chase them.

Just as Zeo was wiping down the knife with his prints all over it, the police siren stirred outside. “Damn!” They did it again!”

“Coppers! They’re all over the place!” Lolita yelled.

A loud voice echo from below. “This is Sergeant Jack McGinty. Drop your weapons, do not try to escape. You are surrounded, Joseph Zeo. I repeat, do not try to escape.”

“How did they know it’s you in here?” Lolita queried.

“We better split. No used getting caught together.” Zeo said and shoved Lolita out the front door. Before he closed it, he grabbed Lolita and gave her a passionate kiss. “Thank you for all you’ve done for me. Now run!”

Zeo locked the door behind him. He knew McGinty wanted his head. Zeo wouldn’t give the crooked cop any excuse to gun him down. He wouldn’t allow any of his friends to get caught in the middle of it either. Zeo went out from the fire escape, dropped his weapon and raised his hands.

He surrendered.

Touching a hand to my bruised lips I took a deep breath. Staring at that closed door, hearing the coppers charging up the stairs behind me......I ran. I bolted around the corner and glued my body to the door of an apartment hoping that the coppers only concentrated on Val's apartment.

Luck was with me. They went straight to Val's apartment and surrounded the door. They didn't even look around the corner to check any of the other apartments. I listened intently and heard a shout from the street. "We got him!" The coppers surrounding the front door kicked the door in and entered to find the gruesome scene inside.

Gathering myself and trying to look calm I strolled around the corner and walked straight past Val's open door. The coppers didn't even look up. I made it to the street and a quick check showed Jack McGinty roughly slamming Zeo into the back of a police car. I was just glad that he couldn't kill him right there in front of the rest of the police but I knew Zeo was in real trouble.

I needed some time to think. My luck was with me so I headed for a place I knew. Perretti's Betting Parlour would be the last place the coppers would look for me. I could have a drink and gather my thoughts.

"Confess Zeo, there's nowhere else to go!" Whack! The chubby cop smacked my face again with his other hand, as his right hand was growing weary from all the interrogation. I could see blood streaming down my shirt with the single lightbulb in the windowless room, a copper guarding a locked door wore a smirk on his face.

I coughed out some blood and slowly replied, "I need to talk to the Commissioner." I must warn the commissioner about the Prince being in danger. He would also understand about McGinty... only if I have that confession letter from Valentino...

The chubby cop laughed heartily. "This is Serg McGinty's turf, boy." He poked the sausage of a finger hard at my temple, "You must have your mind screwed, the Commissioner!!" The cop punched me in the stomach. A coded knock was heard by the door. The fat cop pulled a jacket over my head and I heard the door creaked open and closed.

"His mouth is tight as a vault." The voice of the chubby officer said quietly.

"That's fine." It was the voice of McGinty himself. I heard noises of plastic bags opening.

"But sir... you're not trying to..." Hesitation flooded the voice of the fat cop.

"Just remember how much greens you've received in the past years, and all the 'privileges' along the way. Both of you." McGinty stated.

What the heck was the dirty Sergeant trying to pull this time? With my last ounce of energy I shook the jacket off my head. I was too late. Just then the fat cop held onto my wrists that were cuffed behind my back, and McGinty put the knife into my hand, pressing my fingers together to make sure my prints would register clearly onto the murder weapon.

I cursed and struggled, only to received another blow to my head. "One down, one to go. Now this is the one that was found on Grace Gatsby." I heard McGinty said in my semi-consciousness, and planted another knife in my hand. Everything went back afterwards.
