*Archetype:

This only makes the skills associated with it cheaper. (As far as
I know).

So this means, a Very Smart detective could choose to buy only tough skills, only charming skills or a mixture.
Or a Very Charming detective could buy only tough skills.

Here's what Greyling had to say:
Very-something detectives can subtract 4 points from the base cost of skills that match their archetype.

Combined-archetype detectives can subtract 2 points from the base cost of skills that match the 2 types they cover.

Every detective will have to pay full price/base cost for skills that belong to a different "statistic" than their archetype :)

*Gear/Equipment:

Gear enhances the skills you have. If you have only Charming Skills and wear only Tough Gear, you will not get any enhancement from your equipment. As a lot of Tough Gear has negative values to Charming so you are actually penalising your skills.

Smart Gear: This will enhance any smart skills you have, increasing the chances of finding PE evidence at a crime scene AND finding specific PE at the crime scene, that is, a curly hair rather than a hair. You still need the skills first for the gear to be effective.

What people in agencies do, is put Smart Gear on to search the crime scene then switch into their interview gear.

Tough Gear (an interview outfit): Enhances Tough Skills, for example, Imtimidation and Interrogation.

Charming Gear (an interview outfit): Enhances Charming Skills, for example, Sweet Talking and Rule Bending.

*Skills:

There are your tools to being a detective. The gear/equipment only enhanced them.

There is a lot of talk about what skills to get and when.

The very basci rules is too not mix and match early on.
Get your basic smart skills and your basic interview skills (tough or charming not both at first).

Flirting and Puglism: Flirting enhances Sweet Talking and Rule Bending whereas Puglism (a Faction Skill) enhances Interrogation and Intimidation.

(Oh by the way, read cfm's post, "Welcome Newbie's" the sticky post above this one. It has all this stuff and more and is the best help you can find in the game! I really wish I had that post when I started.)

Nice post :) Can i just clarify:

Archtype only effects the cost of skills and not how effective you are at using them in any way?

If i am smart/charming and have +2 smart and +2 tough i will be as tough as i am smart and less charming?

Thanks

Yes, as far as know Eva.

Your skills and the gear/equipment to enhance them are what matters.

Remember, do NOT get safecracking unless you're in an agency that does Treasure Hunts. Even then, only some of the hunts will need safecracking.
If someone id the agency already has safecracking then don't bother, get it later.

It is WAY more important to gain other skills first.
It is also a bit of a waste to get Pickpocketing in many people's opinion.

IF you want to buy a faction when you're unsubbed, make sure you have your interview skills and smart skills first THEN go for the OoS one.
After that do the DAB.

I wouldn't bother with LCN's at all.

Just because you have advanced smarts, it doesn't mean you will always find all the evidence or specific (that is slim rather than just footprint)evidence.
Smart gear when searching the crime scene should increase your chances of finding all/specific evidence but even then you may end up with Curly Straight Right Footprint.

And remember, you archetype ONLY makes skills cheaper.
If you wanted too, you could be a Very Charming detective and buy only tough skills effectively being a tough detective.

(Although this would be silly mmmkay?)

What is a good rule of thumb when buying clothes and accessories? My character's archtype is very smart, should I stick with items that boost the smart skill? -Feline Magic

Smart clothes will only help you find evidence at the Crime Scene. If you are unsubbed you may want to find items the boost both your interview skill and your smart skill.
Or, not worry too much about the crime scene and find clothes that boost your interview skill.
Myself, I went for the latter, I'd still find some P.E at the crime scene and I could accuse on WE + Fake/None of your Business instead of PE + Fake/None of your Business or even WE + WE.

If you are in an agency, you try to put together a smart outfit which you change into before searching the crime scene.
You search the crime scene then switch into your interview outfit for the rest of the case.
