I'm trying to write for the time period, and am sticking around Shanghai since that's where my agency is currently located. Well, I remember reading that the general time period is 1920-1940, and doing some research found a lot about Japanese influence in that time, including the Second Sino-Japanese war. Japan also built the first factories in Shanghai.

Of course, this is all fictional anyway, but I was wondering what others thought is a good mix between being period accurate and Slueth accurate.

I have been thinking the same. I'm writing my bio and period setting it. I think it's important to be historicaly accurate so bringing in some facts grounds this in reality which as long as it is done in an accurate and interesting way should help intros or scripted mysteries. But hey I'm no expert, just happened along and agreed with you!

Personally I think historically accurate gives any story a nice 'true ring' to it. Also it makes thinking up a bit of background story, when needed, a little easier, if you have some external resources available.

But, ultimately, I think you can do both if you've a mind to. :)

Even though it is widely recognised that sleuth is in the 1920-1940 time period alot of agencies like to focus on a more specified time period usually 1920-1930.
Also reading LOTS of external references help, which I've done a fair bit of and am turning into a semi-amateur historian on the time period. Though by no measure am I very good or very extensive.
But if you have any questions I'll be happy to (try) to answer then.

Well in Shanghai you had the japaneese invade and take over. They wern:t excatly nice about it though. I think it was the 30:s but it might have been the early 40:s.

I think I'm going to explore some history a little more, though it does seem best to do about 1920-1930, since there was a lot more change in the following decade. I don't normally have a big interest in history, though I'm always more interested in learning more about the lands of my heritage, so I think I'll put a little more research into this before continuing my mystery. I have to say, though, this is more fun than I thought it would be. I'm normally a sci-fi or fantasy buff/writer, so this has been a refreshing change.
