NEW YORK (Reuters) - Police investigators believe they have discovered the whereabouts of missing detective, Barry Grant. Grant was reported missing three days about by a friend of his, Rebecca Franks. "I was supposed to meet him at Big Lucy's that night but he never showed."

Grant, Global Sleuth Syndicate Ambassador from Shanghai, had been working at the Blue Pagoda Agency on a Good Will mission at the time of his disappearance. "He was becoming a much relied upon detective." Lady jasNmushu, a Director at Blue Pagoda Agency, said of the missing detective.

Police have reason to believe that Grant was abducted by operatives from HYDRA while on his way to Big Lucy's. "I was meeting him at the corner of Eleventh Avenue and 42nd Street that night." recounted a teary-eyed divorcee Mrs. Franks. "He never showed."

Chief Inspector James Mulligan was able to determine the last place Grant was seen. "Cyrus Tibby recalls serving Mr. Grant a Tom Collins around 7 pm that night. After that, Mr. Grant left the premises and that was the last anyone had seen of him."

This reporter secured an interview with the elusive Larry the Toe. "I don't know anything about that." was his response to all my questions.

There was a break in the investigation when a shady character finally stepped forward to reveal he saw a tall man with a hat being forced into a car. This shady character, who prefers to remain anonymous, was unable to make out the license plate number but he recognized the car and the man doing the abducting. "I've seen that happen before. Same guy. Same car."

Policed will not disclose any more details for fear it could put Mr. Grant's life in jeopardy. Chief Inspector Mulligan's final word: "We don't want to lose any more detectives to that fiendish group."

Editorial Correction
Ia previous article a word was misspelled. The proper spelling is 'kernwaffe'. We regret the error.

Editor's Note: 'kernwaffe' translates from German as 'nuclear weapons'.

Breit looked aimlessly out the hospital window at the street window, sighing tiredly to herself. She glanced over at the man sleeping deeply in the bed beside her. He'd been unconscious for the last twelve hours, ever since he'd been brought here. His face was barely recognizable as the handsome man she'd known. Breit rested her head in her hands, sighing quietly again.
A soft groan from the bed brought her out of her reverie. She looked up to find one brown eye barely open, looking at her. "Where am I?" a rusty voice groaned." Breit smiled with relief, "Welcome back, stranger." She stood up slowly, stretching aching muscles, then came to stand beside Barry, touching his cheek softly. "It's okay. Barry. You're safe now."
He looked around the room, confused, "They said I was at Sinai. This doesn't look like Sinai to me." Breit smiled at him again to reassure him, "It's okay, Barry. You're not at Mount Sinai. We have you at a different hospital, where it's safer." He looked around wildly again, panic showing on his face, "Where'm I?" Breit cupped his face gently, trying to avoid the bruises and cuts covering most of his face. She crooned to him, "Easy, Barry. I'm gonna tell you exactly what's going on, but you need to relax, okay? Just breathe. Nice and easy." She waited for him to calm slightly, then continued, speaking softly, "You're at a secret hospital that's run by the War Department. We brought you here so we could protect you. No one knows you're here, and no one's going to find you. We have people all over the place on guard. Please believe me, you're safe."
He seemed to relax somewhat at this, though still confused. "I thought the news was saying that I was at Sinai. How can I be here?" Breit smiled slightly, "Well, I don't always give the public 'the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help me', especially when someone's safety is at stake. What the rest of the world doesn't know won't hurt them."

She winked at him gently, then sobered slightly. "Do you remember what happened to you at all, Barry?" He looked at her with his good eye, closed it briefly, remembering, then nodded slightly. "A little, he croaked hoarsely. "They had me in some kind of warehouse. One of them got a phone call. The next thing I knew, another one was pointing a gun at me and..." He paused, trying to remember, "...and, and, and then Lady Jas came out of nowhere just as the gun went off and threw something at the shooter." His eye widened, bolted upright in bed, and his closest hand gripped Breit's in an iron grasp. "Where's Jas? What happened to her? Where is she?"
Breit eased him back down again, humming gently, "Easy, honey. She's okay. We found her in time. She's up in surgery right now. Trust me, she's alive." He looked up at her, disbelief plain on his face, "You're sure?" Breit leaned down and let him see her sincerity, "I'm serious, Barry. They're working on her now. She'll be fine."
Breit didn't bother telling him that Jas had been in surgery for the past twelve hours, while he'd been unconscious. He was on the edge enough mentally as it was. She gently stroked his hand, speaking softly again, "When Dave and I got to you at Police Headquarters, the Inspector said that you had said something to him before you passed out. Do you remember that?" He nodded slightly, blinking tiredly. Breit smiled, "That's good, Barry. He said it sounded like 'corn-wassa'. Does that sound familiar?" she asked softly. Barry nodded again, looking at her, "Kern-vaffa. Those goons kept beating me, wanting to know about something named 'kern-vaffa'. I kept telling 'em I had no idea what they were talking about, but they didn't believe me. They just kept hitting me." Breit rubbed his hand comfortingly. "I know, Barry. I'm sorry. But thank you for telling me. I know it wasn't easy."

She looked up at a soft knock at the door to find her husband, Dave, standing there wearily in surgical scrubs, a medical chart in his hand. He smiled tiredly at Breit, his love for her deep in his eyes though. He looked over at Barry from her, and came into the room. "So, you decided to wake up, huh? Welcome back."
Barry turned his head, saw Dave, and tried to come bolt upright again. "Where's Lady Jas? Is she all right?" Dave rushed to his bed and pushed him back down, not quite as gently as Breit had done before. "Dammit, Grant, don't DO that! You're gonna rip your stitches, and I'm gonna hafta sew you back up. Again! Now lie back down and stay there!" Breit took Barry's hand again as Dave fished his stethoscope out of his lab coat pocket. "How is she?" she asked worriedly. Dave glanced at her and shook his head slightly as he hooked the scope around his shoulders. "She's doing as well as can be expected. I just got through got through with her chest wound a few minutes ago. The orthopedic guys are dealing with her shoulder now. The bullet went in just under her collarbone, slightly nicked an artery, and lodged in the head of her humerus, or her shoulderbone. It pretty much shattered everything around it. She's lost a lot of blood, and had some artery and nerve damage. They're working to repair the last of the damage to her shoulder now. If she makes it through the next twenty-four hours or so, she'll be fine. Until then, it's touch-and-go. He looked at both of them, his face grey with fatigue and eyes deep with sympathy. Breit nodded at him, realizing her fears had been well-founded. Barry groaned and closed his eye.
He turned to Barry, "Now, let's talk about you." He glanced through the chart. "You're lucky to be alive too. Looks like they worked you over pretty good. Fractured right orbital bone, multiple broken ribs, possible internal injuries including a bruised spleen, broken left wrist, and more contusions, abrasions, and lacerations than I can count.

"You're gonna be a hurtin' man for quite a while. Don't expect to be walking around for a couple of days or so. And your chest is gonna hurt like a sonofagun for about a month. We've got you on painkillers now, so you don't feel it much, but it'll kick in if you keep moving around a lot, so knock it off and lie still." He adjusted the stethoscope and listened to Barry's chest for a bit, then gently tested his eyes. "Your lungs are clear so far, which is a good sign, and there's no indication of concussion. We're gonna keep you here in the Intensive Care Unit for a couple of days and monitor you, just to be careful." Dave probed Barry's wrist gently, "You having any pain yet?" Barry winced a little, "I'm starting to feel it, yeah." Dave nodded, "Okay, I'll get you another shot in a minute." He looked over at Breit, "I need to borrow my bride for a minute, if you don't mind." She nodded, and patted Barry's hand again, "I'll be right back. Just rest, okay?"
As Dave held the door open for Breit, he glanced back over his shoulder, "I'll be back in a minute with a shot for you. In the meantime, don't go off and run any marathons, okay?" Barry smiled slightly, then winced again in pain.
Once outside the room, Dave held Breit close as she began to cry. "How bad is Jas?" she whispered?" Dave sighed, his lips caressing her temple, "Like I told Barry, she's touch and go. They're both damned lucky to be alive right now." He kissed her forehead tenderly, "I'm sorry, sweetheart. We've done all we can. It's up to God now." She raised her face to his, and kissed him back, "Thank you, love."
They held each other for several minutes, ignoring the quiet bustle of the hospital and guards all around them. Finally, Breit looked up at him again. "I talked to Barry while you were upstairs. He remembers some of what happened to him. Apparently, they were interrogating him about the word 'kernwaffe'." Dave looked at her, puzzled, "Kernwaffe? Is that German?"

Breit nodded, "Yes, it is. My German's not that good, but I think that 'kern' is the word for atomic, and 'waffe' is a bomb." She looked up at him, puzzled, "Does that make any sense to you?" Dave's face turned grim, his eyes hardened from bright blue to grayish steel. "Yeah, cherie, unfortunately, it does. It makes way too much sense." He released her and went over to the two Marines standing guard outside Barry's room. "Corporal," he addressed one of them, ignoring the man's salute, "Go find your Lieutenant, please, and get him up here. Now." The marine scurried off. Dave then went and commandeered the telephone at the nearby Nurses' Station. Within seconds, he was speaking with Admiral Louis Peterson, Assistant Secretary of War. "Lou, Dave. They're after the Island Project. Yes, dammit, I'm serious. Breit just got confirmation of it from the kidnap victim. We need to send her people after His Highness, and I need you to get R.J. and Albie and the others up here. Those papers are the key to this whole mess. We need to crack that code, and we need to do it NOW. Okay, I'll be over in ten minutes. Bye." He hung up the phone, requested a morphine bottle and syringe from a nurse, and turned back to Breit.

Dave spoke with Breit for another minute, then went to go give Grant his next shot of painkiller. Standing at Barry's door, he heard a commotion behind him, and turned around. Barry's family had finally arrived, with Department escorts in tow. The corporal he had sent off was also with them, along with the Hospital's Assistant Chief of Security, a Marine Lieutenant. He indicated to the two Marines to wait for a minute while he spoke with Barry's family, then went to meet them. Breit was already introducing herself to Barry's sister Betty, and her two children, son Brian, and daughter Bobbi, and someone Barry had been asking for when he'd collapsed at the police station, Andrea X. While Breit knelt down to entertain the children for a minute, Dave introduced himself to the two women, shaking each lady's hand. "Hello, I'm Dr. David Adams, Breit's husband. I've been looking after Barry." He turned to the taller of the two women, with long, dark hair, and tired, frightened eyes. "You must be Barry's sister, Betty," he said gently. "I promise, Barry's safe now." The second woman was shorter, tiny almost, with shorter, curly bobbed hair, amber eyes, and an expectant attitude to her. "Miss X, I believe," Dave said, shaking her hand firmly, "it's a pleasure to meet you." Interestingly, Andrea was the one to take charge. "When can we see Barry, please, Doctor?" Dave smiled gently, "Please, call me Dave. You can see him right now. I do need to tell you two things. First, this is a top-secret, classified facility. You've been brought here as a courtesy because Barry was badly injured in the line of duty to the American government. I would ask that you tell NO ONE about this place. Ever. Not your families. Not your friends. Not God. Thousands of lives, including Barry's, depend on it. You ladies understand?" Both women looked taken aback for a minute, then nodded, Betty rather timidly, Andrea with more conviction.

"Thank you," Dave replied. "Secondly, Barry has been pretty badly beaten. He's not going to look very good. His injuries are not life-threatening anymore, but we are keeping him here in the Intensive Care Unit both for security purposes and to be able to closely monitor his condition. I'm just trying to warn you before you see him, he's going to look pretty bad. Okay?" He smiled gently at their nods. He turned to indicate Breit, "I'm sure my wife would be happy to look after your children, Ma'am, while you're visiting with Barry. This is probably something that they shouldn't be exposed to." Breit looked up at them, smiled cheerfully, and tickled Bobbi's cheek playfully, "I have an idea! How would you two like some ice cream?" At their delighted cries, Dave summoned a Marine Guard from down the hall, and Breit and the children set off for the hospital cafeteria, with Dave whispering he'd see her at home a little later.
He then turned, opened Barry's room door for the ladies, and waved them in. "Barry," he greeted the man, "look who your Fairy Goddoctor turned up." He crossed to Barry's bed and gave him a shot of morphine directly into his I.V. drip., then turned back to the ladies. "I've just given him something for his pain. It'll take effect in about ten minutes, and he'll probably go to sleep for a while after that. You're free to stay here as long as you like, and we have some hotel rooms set up for you ladies when you're finished here. There's two guards on duty directly across the hall outside at all times, and your escorts are also stationed just outside the door. If you need anything, please feel free to ask them. Please don't go anywhere without them while you're here in New York to see Barry. They're here for your safety. I'll be back a little later to check on Barry, and if you need any help from me or have any questions, your escorts know just how to find me. With that, I'll leave you with Barry."
