how do you get in good standings with the different groups of factions (at least i think that's what they're called- like the order o socrates and brotherhood...)?

When you're in the middle of a case u might get a fill-in which will say your standing will improve with so and so faction. Once you have got to at least 1point with any faction then you can go and talk to them and do favours for them, which will improve your standing. Beware though that if your standing improves with one faction then it will probably drop with another.
