Like I said, how does it work? Will I be able to see if a suspect is going to clam up on me on my first question?

Stress detection will tell you when you only have one question left before the person clams up.

It's one you wouldn't bother with until you had your full interview and smart skills.

Thank you. I thought it'd tell you a stress level as a number so you knew about how many questions they would ask.

I happen to like stress detection! It does tell you if a suspect is about to clam on the first question, which comes in VERY handy, if I get a sus like that I leave him and talk to my others first, that way I get my list from them and I can go back to him and either get his alibi or if research gave him an alibi I can ask him if he's seen anything.

It will ber very useful on harder cases where you click on the person and it tells you right away "he won't answer anymore questions" that way you can use your skills to your best advantage and not waste questions.

Well, as you play the game you get to know how many questions you can ask. It's not really that much help later on as you've already figured that out for yourself.
YES, all the skills DO HELP a little BUT as the game progresses you need MORE HELPFUL skills and will be perhaps disappointed that you wasted valuble skill points on a less than helpful skill.
If its one that came with your detective, fine. I think it's stupid and a complete waste of skill points to buy early on as you really don't NEED it.
But the game is there for all to play as they see fit and it's no big deal.
And like, you said if you think it's VERY handy, I am more than happy for you. :)

The skill I think is a waste of points is judge of character, I don't need to know if sweet talking would work better, I just drag out my brass knuckles and pop'em in the mouth. They're happy to talk after that :-)

I have always found it useful because my character has some skills and I have trouble finding out if people are going to clam up on me. I tend to ask a lot of questions and knowing that maybe I should wait on a key suspect has saved me many times.

In the end, it's up to you to make the decision.

I think I shall wait on the stress detection then. Shush Peter. Judge of Character might not be useful for a detective on their own, but when working in an agency it allows detectives complement each others skills. Want that extra bit of chance that your persuassion will work, then use JoC.

Bah, when I got JoC I thought it would randomly give you a better chance to unclam your suspect.

One more question. Does having better charm/tough skills give you more of a chance to ask more questions after a suspects has been unclammed? (And what is the skill modifier for adv Sweet Talking?)
